Much of Congress in those “good old days” was bought & paid for by Railroads, the Steel Trust, and Rockefeller’s Standard Oil.
Today it is different: the bribers represent new industries.
That’s a great quote. Especially the part of the part, “throw the bums (leaders?) out” on a whim. This past election was much like that in what the Tea Partiers (most who are aged older than 55) wanted. Cut the government’s wasteful spending. Cut programs — but NOT their programs — that waste money by spending on programs that are supporting the people the Tea Partiers don’t like.
If Social Security and defense spending remain off-limits, that leaves only 15% of the federal budget in which to find economies. Or we could identify new sources of revenue … which is why the ideology-driven ban on Internet gambling is so counterproductive, IMO.

The blogosphere is rife with rumors that the “deficit committee” is going to recommend that SS payments eligibility be changed to “means testing” as a way to exclude rich persons from monthly payments. One fear is that this would change the perception of SS from a pay-in/pay-out contract between the govt. & its citizens to a “welfare program” for old poor people – thus a target for deficit reduction cuts.
Hard to tell how the tea partyers would like that.
