“The minor was in contact with the four drink servers, at least two dealers, a floor supervisor and at least 10 other Harrah’s employees, none of whom asked for identification, the complaint says.” — from a Las Vegas Sun story about Caesars Entertainment getting totally busted for allowing underage drinking and gambling at four of its Strip properties (Caesars Palace, The Rio, Harrah’s Las Vegas and Flamingo Las Vegas) and being fined a whopping $100,000. That’ll show ’em. Evidently the company’s “very strict policy” about keeping out underage players doesn’t always extend to carding them when they order drinks. But hey, when your company is $19.5 billion in the hole and sinking, who can afford to be persnickety, right?

I just checked, and I think both the gambling age and drinking age are both 21.
Pilot: You are correct — and I am not. Thanks for setting me straight.
Everyone else: The strike-through command in Word Press is malfunctioning, so I have deleted the offending sentence. But, for the record: I HAD IT WRONG! (I hope that satisfies the Poynter Institute.)
Yup, in Nevada an 18-year-old can vote or get shipped off to Afghanistan to get his butt shot at by the Taliban. But we musn’t permit him drink or gamble. Makes total sense. (Not.)
If this happened in NJ or LA instead of NV, the fine would have an extra zero attached to it. Actually, if this happened in NJ, Harrahs would be looking at some of their liquor licenses being suspended.
If I were the Board, I’d be embarrassed.
There is no enforcement action that can possibly stem this tide, when you are eighteen years old in this country, you are forced to live in limbo for three years. Most of my older sons friends have ridiculously good fake I.D.’s, easily obtained, so getting carded is a joke to them. Alcohol kills, literally, so 21 is a no-brainer in terms of drinking, maturity matters. I’m not so sure about preventing 18yo’s from playing in a casino. All gamblers at some time need to come to grips with the dangers and pleasures you get in a casino. The first time I lost my entire two week paycheck in a casino was fortunately my last, and I was around 21 at the time. The Libertarian streak I have makes me uncomfortable asking young adults in every way responsible for their own actions, to be deemed as a group somehow unfit to pull a slot lever. I say let all adults gamble if they like, it won’t kill them or any innocents.
I agree Mike. Amazing that as a country we are so hung up on things like TITS but are fine with assault weapons. Sorry but I never saw a TIT kill anyone!
