“The White House sent [Sen. Harry] Reid a list of suggested concessions … Reid looked over the concessions the administration wanted to offer, crumpled up the paper and tossed it into his fireplace … Reid frequently keeps his fire going and is fond of feeding a variety of proposals to it.” — Nevada‘s senior senator and his idiosyncratic manner make news again.

Harry Reid is just an outstanding Senator. The man calls it like it is. He is a true moderate. I realize my right wing friends will strongly disagree with that, but facts are facts. Since the right has veered rightward at a speedy and uncontrolled pace, moderates like Sen. Reid are portrayed as radicals…
Lebowsky, you call Harry Reid a moderate and an outstanding Senator. You are certainly welcome to your opinion, and maybe he looks good to a liberal from his home state. But unfortunately, Reid is the leader of the Senate with tremendous power to run the Senate. In my opinion, the way he has exercised that power to block the legislative process for the last four years and prevent compromise has caused great damage to this country. A specific example is the role he played in talks leading to the fiscal cliff compromise. After refusing any compromise with Boener, then refusing any compromise with McConnell, and after throwing the White House suggestions into his fireplace, he was replaced with VP Biden in the talks. Only then, and after the 11th hour, did this country get an ugly compromise that avoided an even worse plunge off the cliff. Harry may look good to Nevada, but he looks very bad to the rest of the country.
Jerry: Thats all kabuki theatre, and in fact Reid and McConnell did all the heavy lifting on the “deal”, this was proven by the dozens of stalled Obama nominations that got unanimous Senate support the very next day. Boehner is the dysfunctional one who literally can not control the extremists in his caucus, and he was forced to punt it off to Harry Reid. Reid and Biden have always been on the same page, for decades.
The real extremists are Obama and the democrats. Why would any Tea Party Rep vote for a package which would raise taxes on any group when Reid already said the Senate would not bring it up and Obama said that if passed, he would veto it? That was a nonstarter. Boehner did his best to compromise with those whose main aim was not the country’s best interests but merely a political oneupsmanship. On to the next chapter, since they punted the real decision down the road a couple of months. God help this country.
Jerry: Raising the tax rates on the folks at the very top is quite popular and not “extremist” in any way, it’s simply returning the rates at the top to what they were in the 1990’s. These folks at the top are doing quite well while the rest of us flatline. It’s the Republicans who wave the red flag about long term deficits, then fight like the Dickens against every attempt to get more revenue to fix the problem. Cuts alone will not solve the long term deficit…
Only an idiot believes that higher taxes will fix the problem. It is a proven fact that the Bush tax cuts brought in more tax revenue, which is why the GOP wants lower taxes–it boosts our economy and brings more jobs and more revenue.
Getting back to Reid, here is his latest. “The people of New Orleans and that area, they were hurt, but nothing in comparison to what happened to the people in New York and New Jersey,” Reid said. Congressman Vitter from Louisiana called him an idiot.

Jerry: Calling people who may disagree with you “idiots” hardly helps our fractured discourse, but I will go ahead. You are right, higher taxes alone won’t fix the “problem”, it must be done in conjunction with smarter spending. Something you posted earlier reminds me of what might be the core issue, regional politics. You posted that I like Harry Reid because I am from Nevada. I live in California actually. Take a look at the 89 Republican Reps who voted against the fiscal cliff deal and where they are from, The South. The Republican far right largely resides in the Southern States, thats where people like Allen West get elected. Most of America disagrees with such rigid ideaology, so the Republicans are in danger of becoming a party that is unable to win National elections. BTW, Harry Reid said he “obviously misspoke” in regards to the quote you posted, and Vitter, that man who hires prostitutes at the same time he legislates morals, is actually a Senator…
Let’s see, you used Kabuki Theater, Dysfunctional, Extremists, and Far Right for those you oppose. I used Idiot. Glad to know you are from California. You might not know that many conservative Republicas are Governors of states like Wisconsin, Michigan, New Jersey (well…), and other states not in the south. There are some pretty good Republicans from California, like Daryl Issa, for example. In fact if you look at the map from the election, GOP votes were heavy in all states, mostly in the more rural areas. But to stay on track, Harry Reid may say he misspoke, but he is an idiot.
Ahhh Jerry… You insulted actual people… politicians hardly count as people these days… apples and oranges… I would never call you an “idiot”, I don’t even know you other than your interest in reading right slanted “news”. Have a happy new year, and see you at the polls…
Actually, Mr Lebowsky, I aimed my “idiot” label not at you personally, but at anyone whose brain can look at the facts and then disregard them when it comes to taxation and revenue. If you fit that description, then please don’t take it personally. Again, Sen Reid is the object of my displeasure, and I agree with Sen Vitter.
And actually, Mr Lebowsky, since you seem to want to take this personally, I read the news from a variety of sources, from liberal to conservative viewpoints. I have many very liberal friends with whom I enjoy productive conversations, when they don’t sling labels my way. But again, this thread is about Sen Reid and how he is a real danger to the US in his present position.
