“The question is should they be used indiscriminately on little children and grandmothers … There’s no practical distinction between a full body scan and being pulled into a side room and being ordered to strip your clothing.” — Rep. Tom McClintock (R-CA), on X-ray scanners. Guess which airport is one of the TSA’s six “primary” sites for these see-all devices? That’s right … McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas. Happy New Year!

Yes, Congressman, there is a difference. The TSA operator is in another room, and does not know anything about the observer, and there’s a big difference between taking off all your clothes in front of strangers, and standing fully clothed (except for shoes)in a booth for a few seconds.
As for practicality, there’s no way that thousands of travelers could be strip-searched every day without the whole commercial air travel system breaking down.
I wonder if the Israelis use these machines? I read that they emphasize spotting terrorist PERSONS over mostly looking for terrorist WEAPONS – by observing and questioning all travelers, and weeding out the suspicious looking/acting ones.
By the way, I read that travelers are now advised to get to the airport 2-4 hours before takeoff because of increased security procedures… as if I didn’t need another reason to drive or take the bus to Vegas.
– By the way, to the Redittocans who are screaming that all Obama’s policies “invited” the failed terrorist attack in the skies over Detroit – can you say “shoe bomber”? Can you say “President Bush”? Can you say “Republican Congress”?
If you say, “Well, we countered that threat by having all travelers take off their shoes for inspection”, you should logically dictate that all travelers must take off their underwear, and turn them in for inspection. Are you ready for that?
Didn’t think so. Just keep up your partisan whining while the real “real Americans” continue working to counter terrorists’ tactics.
