At the moment, I’m following up on some leads that might (I stress “might“) coalesce into a bigger story. I’ve also been trying to clear my desk of a flurry of Questions of the Day and sundry other essays. Topics include: Sen. William Andrews Clark (from whom Clark County took its name), Teller, the future — if any — of the Liberace Museum, the “Snooki-fication of Las Vegas,” Moe Dalitz, the Meridian condo project and possible expansion of the Las Vegas Premium Outlets mall in Downtown. By the way, if you’re tempted to buy an “exposé” of Mob-run Vegas called War of the Godfathers by William F. Roemer … don’t! It contains some of the most outrageous urban mythology I’ve ever run across. Other books actually cite it as a reliable source, a scary real-life instance of legend trumping history.

Would like to hear more on Meridian condo project. I looked there when it first tried to go condo. Lucky I didn’t buy.
Having spent the afternoon unraveling — and that is the operative verb — the knotted history of the Meridian, I can promise you that it will make interesting reading. Keep your eye on Question of the Day!
I remember, during my first trip to Vegas decades ago, hearing repeated PA announcements like these in the casinos:
“Mister Calzone, call for Mister Tony Calzone.”
“Mister Rigatony, call for Mister Tony Rigatony.”
“Mister Pickles, call for Mister Pickles, please pick up.”
My friends told me that I would always be welcome at the Frontier, since that establishment was “run” by the Pittsburgh Mob. The first part wasn’t true.
“The Snooki-fication of Las Vegas” is the absolutely perfect way to describe the hordes of club kids currently holding sway over the strip. Your blog is bloody brilliant, even when merely contemplating topics!
