… and while you’re at it, pull the weeds growing around them. That’s been a big part of my week so far, as I try to catch up on a backlog of commissions, kick the tires on a possible new S&G spin-off and tidy up the lawns of our Las Vegas abode (with its front-porch view of the Strip, plus some really good plane-spotting), which now includes a rapidly budding rose tree out front. (Did you know that coffee grounds make good mulch?) Last year, I vanquished several armies of ants. This year, it’s me vs. the weeds but, to date, the weeds are winning. However, it’s a good, meditative form of exercise: Nothing solves writer’s block quite like some quality time spent digging crabgrass out of the cracks in your sidewalk.

This reminds me of the Godfather. James Brown, of course. Really, it does.
During one of his many cash-flow crisies he walked out the front door of his estate and saw his father pulling weeds from the front yard. He asked his father what he was doing that for and his father replied something to the effect of “Can’t just sit around worryin’, it’ll kill you”. Realizing his father’s wisdom, he joined in and felt tremendous relief through sweating in the sun and burying his fingers in the soil. Becoming as one with the earth.
Brown is also the person who said Elvis was killed by air conditioning. His reasoning was that closing the windows and hiding the real temperature of the world around him had killed the soul of the southern boy. He had lost all connection with his roots. He probably would have felt much the same about MIchael Jackson.
Anyway, working in the yard can be very cleansing for the mind and soul, good luck on your endeavors.
