Thanks to all the readers who have sent on- and off-list condolences for the loss of Tommy. Here he is in fine fettle, either saying that he covets my baked potato or (more likely), “Where are my table scraps, dammit?” He was a hungry boy and relentless in his demands for pre-dawn feedings. Ignore his loud demands and you would get a nip on the ear. Now the house is quiet and an enormous presence has left us. But Tommy has gone to a better place and for that (and the years he gave us) we are happy.

Very sorry for your loss, we are currently savoring every single day we have Louie, our 17 year old Maine Coon cat, Louie is King, we are his loyal subjects… Louie in his old age has found a new love, the shower, He gets right in there, and lets the water splash on him as he laps up gulps of running water on the shower floor. And he loudly whines at all hours for you to turn the shower on, He gets me up around five every morning wanting food, I have to get up because my wife still works and she needs the sleep. Louie loves people, anybody who comes in, he snuggles the legs of cable TV installers and air conditioning repair men. The vet told us he has cancer, so we just try our best to make him happy, we are done taking him to the vet and paying 500 dollars for labs and diagnostic tests…
Maine Coon cats are wonderful, giant and mellow. It’s been 10 years since I lost my big boy Fasolt and I miss him every day. When I moved to the then-strange city of Las Vegas his companionship was invaluable in lessening the strain. And I can’t count the number of times we fell asleep listening to “Fresh Air” on NPR.
Yeah David, Maine Coon cats are unique, eccentric, loving, and huge… Louie used to weigh 19 pounds, he unfortunately is down to around 11 currently. But every few days or so he gets some of his old energy back and does some cat/kitten things like climbing up to window sills way too high, or sneaking onto the dining room table and stealing food scraps or drinking your water…
To Mike A and David: I know very well how each of you are feeling. At 14.5 years old, my/our 15 lb. dog named Angel had an $500+ ultrasound test which indicated cancer. My/our choice was to take her (where she had never been before) to University of PA vet hospital for 3 biopsy tests with general anesthesia, followed later with area specific treatments. One of the areas adjoined her aorta, and general anesthesia, much too risky. I/we opted for our own home hospice for her last several months, me sleeping on a recliner near the front door, with her nearby, easy to take her outside . Mike, you’re doing the right thing, you did all you could.
I appreciate that Mike, lets do our best and enjoy the time we have left with our pets we love like family…
