{"id":10053,"date":"2012-11-08T11:34:59","date_gmt":"2012-11-08T19:34:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=10053"},"modified":"2019-09-18T07:38:55","modified_gmt":"2019-09-18T15:38:55","slug":"wake-up-with-loveman-more-election-aftermath","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wake-up-with-loveman-more-election-aftermath\/","title":{"rendered":"Wake up with Loveman; More election aftermath"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>No sooner were <strong>Wall Street<\/strong> analysts uttering serious concerns about a slow post-Sandy recovery for <strong>Atlantic City<\/strong> than who should pop up on <em>CBS This Morning<\/em> but <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> CEO <strong>Gary Loveman<\/strong>, doing damage control &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s hard to decide which is funnier: doddering <strong>Charlie Rose<\/strong> unwittingly picking at a Loveman sore spot by mentioning <strong>Macao<\/strong>, where the professor misjudged the political process so badly, or Loveman denying that there&#8217;s been a decline in <strong>Atlantic City<\/strong>, at about 5:15. The Caesars CEO is actually in peak form here, nimbly <!--more-->rattling off facts, driving home the message that helping employees who were adversely affected by Sandy are a top priority (much as was the case after <strong>Hurricane Katrina<\/strong>, one of <strong>Harrah&#8217;s Entertainment<\/strong>&#8216;s finest hours) and doing his best to counteract the power the images from the <strong>New Jersey<\/strong> shore &#8230; a Herculean task, to be sure. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressofatlanticcity.com\/news\/press\/casinos_tourism\/casino-vendors-suffer-severe-negative-impact-from-casino-closures-during\/article_cb84ee64-26cf-11e2-9d05-001a4bcf887a.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Whatever pain<\/a> the casinos are feeling <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressofatlanticcity.com\/news\/press\/casinos_tourism\/casino-vendors-suffer-severe-negative-impact-from-casino-closures-during\/article_cb84ee64-26cf-11e2-9d05-001a4bcf887a.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">is magnified substantially as it trickles down<\/a> to their contractors.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-5563\" title=\"Marrandino\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Marrandino-201x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"169\" height=\"252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Marrandino-201x300.jpg 201w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Marrandino-100x150.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Marrandino.jpg 276w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 169px) 100vw, 169px\" \/>The hurricane&#8217;s aftermath <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressofatlanticcity.com\/news\/press\/atlantic\/plans-for-conference-center-at-harrah-s-resort-in-atlantic\/article_0cd6965e-293e-11e2-b69e-001a4bcf887a.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lends new urgency<\/a> to <strong>Harrah&#8217;s Resort<\/strong>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressofatlanticcity.com\/news\/breaking\/caesars-plans-to-add-million-conference-center-at-harrah-s\/article_80f411d0-17c6-11e2-95e7-001a4bcf887a.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">plans for a $134 million, 200K-square-foot<\/a> conference center, which Caesars&#8217; eastern tribune, <strong>Don Marrandino<\/strong> (<em>left<\/em>), pitched to the <strong>Casino Reinvestment Development Authority<\/strong>. This seems an excellent use of $45 million in CRDA money, petulant foot-stomping by <strong>Trump Entertainment Resorts<\/strong> CEO <strong>Robert Griffin<\/strong> notwithstanding. Sandwiched between Harrah&#8217;s, <strong>Borgata<\/strong> and the <strong>Golden Nugget<\/strong>, it would also have the drawing power of being in the freshest part of town. Atlantic City has hemmed and hawed for decades between &#8220;Build the facilities, then get the events&#8221; and its converse. Caesars is to be commended for coming down on the side of the former, and in a decisive way. (As for the source of the $55 million &#8220;private loan,&#8221; can you say &#8220;<strong>Dan Gilbert<\/strong>&#8220;? I thought you could.)<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5808\" title=\"gary_loveman-copy_comp\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/gary_loveman-copy_comp.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"207\" height=\"252\" \/>Where Loveman<\/strong> diverges from Wall Street is his vision of full Boardwalk recovery by New Year&#8217;s. <strong>Moodys Investors Service<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressofatlanticcity.com\/news\/press\/casinos_tourism\/atlantic-city-casino-revenue-profits-to-suffer-in-wake-of\/article_becf6e30-285d-11e2-a2c7-001a4bcf887a.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">projects 25% revenue declines<\/a> for 4Q12 and 1Q13 <em>and<\/em> halved profitability. Resuming coverage of Caesars after <strong>Hurricane Sandy<\/strong>, analyst <strong>Carlo Santarelli<\/strong> of <strong>Deutsche Bank<\/strong> projects 18% less cash flow for Caesars overall than he did when the stock went public, with a slight (4%) EBITDA improvement in 2014. Regarding A.C. specifically, <strong>RBC Capital Markets<\/strong>&#8216; <strong>John Kempf<\/strong> essentially ratifies Moodys&#8217; view. Plainly put, his argument in that rival casino markets (like <strong>Philadelphia<\/strong>, for one) enjoy greater proximity to customers. With New Jersey&#8217;s transit systems in disarray and areas still without power, a seaside jaunt to Atlantic City right now must seem like an idea somewhere between frivolity and folly.<\/p>\n<p>For someone who&#8217;s <strong>Steve Wynn<\/strong>&#8216;s BFF, Charlie Rose seems extraordinarily out of the loop with regard to what&#8217;s been happening lately, particularly with regard to casino expansion right under his somnolent, East Coast nose. No matter how many times I watch it, I can&#8217;t believe it. Could someone get this man a strong cup of coffee and a few good minutes with <strong>Frank Fahrenkopf<\/strong>, please?<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-10054\" title=\"Obama\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Obama.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"259\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Obama.jpeg 259w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Obama-150x112.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 259px) 100vw, 259px\" \/>Does the Obama re-election<\/strong> bode well for Internet poker? <em>Online Casino News<\/em>&#8216; <strong>Brian K. Trembath<\/strong> thinks not &#8230; but for a reason that might surprise you. State lotteries in <strong>Kentucky<\/strong> and <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong> are balking at the idea of federal intrusion into their bailiwick. However, he thinks the recent bromance between the President and Gov. <strong>Chris Christie<\/strong> (R-NJ) might portend a more laissez-faire federal attitude toward sports betting in Atlantic City and elsewhere. That sounds a bit of a stretch to me but who thought we&#8217;d see the <strong>Wire Act<\/strong> relaxed sufficiently to permit online poker. (A stricter re-reinterpretation was one of the bullets Big Gaming dodged on Tuesday night.)<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-7457\" title=\"SteveBeshear_190x266\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/SteveBeshear_190x266-107x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"107\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/SteveBeshear_190x266-107x150.jpg 107w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/SteveBeshear_190x266.jpg 190w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 107px) 100vw, 107px\" \/>Stick a fork<\/strong> deep into <strong>Kentucky<\/strong> Gov. <strong>Steve Beshear<\/strong>&#8216;s stop-and-go attempts to bring casinos to the Bluegrass State. If he thought previous Legislatures were obstructionist, the next will be more anti-gambling than ever. <a href=\"http:\/\/cdcgamingreports.com\/anti-gambling-forces-happy-with-election-results\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">He lost five Democratic supporters and one Republican ally<\/a> in the state house, making the prospects for success in the remainder of his term look bleaker than ever.<\/p>\n<p><strong>One Las Vegas businessman<\/strong> took out his frustration with Tuesday night&#8217;s election results on his employees and, you may find this shocking, <a href=\"http:\/\/lasvegas.cbslocal.com\/2012\/11\/07\/vegas-employer-obama-won-so-i-fired-22-employees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">it wasn&#8217;t<\/a> <strong>Sheldon Adelson<\/strong>. Unfortunately, the guy is too cowardly to say who he is, although I suspect the local papers may ferret out his identity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Since &#8220;John Galt,&#8221;<\/strong> as we&#8217;ll call him for now, has &#8220;mostly Hispanic employees,&#8221; this would be a good time to post the following graphic from <strong>Cuentame<\/strong>.
