God forbid you&#8217;re playing at the <strong>Atlantic Club<\/strong> and work up an appetite. Or did <strong>Tom Barrack<\/strong> hear about &#8220;Stiff of the Year&#8221; and wants to get in the race?<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s no point in revisiting Midwestern casino misery month in, month out. Although <strong>Illinois<\/strong> looks to have maybe, finally struck bottom, it&#8217;s pretty much the same story everywhere: Consumers are keeping their billfolds shut and &#8220;growth&#8221; is a mirage. It just means another casino has opened. But there&#8217;s a phenomenon in <strong>Missouri<\/strong> that&#8217;s worthy of remark &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>In the <strong>Kansas City<\/strong> market, <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong> has essentially sabotaged one of its existing properties in order to get the coveted <strong>Kansas Speedway<\/strong> concession. <em>Argosy <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5348\" title=\"Ameristar KC-2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Ameristar-KC-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Ameristar-KC-2.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Ameristar-KC-2-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Riverside<\/em> has been screeching downward by high double-digit amounts for eight consecutive months. It fell 23% last month, as a casino that grossed $16 million in the first month of the year just posted $12 million in gaming revenues, skidding past <strong>Harrah&#8217;s North Kansas City<\/strong> ($15 million, -6%) on its way to third place. Penn is no stranger to scorched-earth tactics: It was prepared to walk away from a fully completed casino in <strong>Maryland<\/strong> <em>before it even opened<\/em>, so don&#8217;t tell me CEO <strong>Peter Carlino<\/strong> wasn&#8217;t willing to sacrifice a big chunk of <em>Argosy<\/em> business in order to have some <strong>Kansas<\/strong> action, too. Although both <em>Isle of Capri Kansas City<\/em> (-7.5%) and <strong>Ameristar Kansas City<\/strong> (-12%, <em>left<\/em>) having been taking hits, nobody&#8217;s reveneus been bled the way Penn has exsanguinated <em>Argosy<\/em>. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/kansascity\/news\/2012\/11\/13\/kansas-city-riverboat-casinos-roll.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">All but Ameristar are hemorrhaging customers, however<\/a>.) \u00a0I guess you&#8217;d call it &#8220;vampire capitalism.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trick or trea<\/strong>t. Halloween was all treat for <strong>Isle of Capri Cape Girardeau<\/strong>, which grossed $600,000 in the last two days of October. Even if it falls off that torrid pace, it&#8217;s still certain to <!--more-->become Isle&#8217;s highest-grossing casino in Missouri, though some of that success comes at the expense of <em>Lady Luck<\/em> (-6%) down in <strong>Caruthersville<\/strong>.\u00a0 The <strong>St. Louis<\/strong> market, flat overall, was <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5940\" title=\"PNK_small\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/PNK_small.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"167\" height=\"108\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/PNK_small.png 200w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/PNK_small-150x97.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 167px) 100vw, 167px\" \/>the same old same-old. <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> continues to let business slide to year-worst levels (-10%) as it skeddadles out of <strong>Harrah&#8217;s Maryland Heights<\/strong> and Penn moves in. Declines at <strong>Pinnacle Entertainment<\/strong>&#8216;s downtown <strong>Lumiere Place<\/strong> were negated by gains at its <strong>River City<\/strong>, and <strong>Ameristar St. Charles<\/strong> (-1.5%) is still Numero Uno. In other words, about what you&#8217;d expect.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-10064\" title=\"hotram-327-08\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/hotram-327-08.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"203\" height=\"152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/hotram-327-08.jpg 203w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/hotram-327-08-150x112.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 203px) 100vw, 203px\" \/>PNK panic<\/strong>. While it&#8217;s still unclear how the <strong>Ho Tram Strip<\/strong> could have gone from hunky-dory in the Oct. 24 investor call to &#8216;potential near-term writeoff&#8217; on Nov. 9, <strong>Deutsche Bank<\/strong> analyst <strong>Carlo Santarelli<\/strong> was right that the news would keep getting worse. The latest bulletin? Vietnamese gamblers, at least those who live nearby, could be barred from the property and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vegasinc.com\/news\/2012\/nov\/12\/pinnacle-entertainment-stock-falls-problems-mount-\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">the local power grid may be inadequate to support Ho Tram<\/a> &#8230; not without prohibitive expense, anyway. Since there is no working capital, Pinnacle would have to throw good money after bad. Ever get the feeling that somebody associated with this project didn&#8217;t do their homework?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Grow your own<\/strong>. Who figured that <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong>&#8216; next exportable commodity might be education? Even if the <strong>Las Vegas Strip<\/strong>&#8216;s growth is stagnant, there&#8217;s a need for well-trained casino personnel across the country that gets greater by the day &#8212; and the same is even more true of the <strong>Pacific Rim<\/strong>. Hence the <strong>Konami Gaming Lab<\/strong> at <strong>UNLV<\/strong> is a valuable asset to Sin City, one that the <em>Las Vegas Sun<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lasvegassun.com\/news\/2012\/nov\/12\/casino-u-look-inside-unlvs-gaming-lab\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">explores in detail<\/a> &#8230; <strong>Somer Hollingsworth<\/strong> can talk about low taxes until the cows come home but that&#8217;s lagniappe to <strong>Southern California<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Free Speech Coalition<\/strong>. No, the Silver State holds a more powerful lure: unregulated sex. According to the <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em>&#8216; <strong>Nita Lelyveld<\/strong>, porn-movie producers are talking about avoiding new California safe-sex requirements and &#8220;<em><strong>Nevada<\/strong> would welcome their business with open arms<\/em>&#8221; and unprotected orifices &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ve heard from <strong>Carolyn Goodman<\/strong> about &#8220;medical tourism.&#8221; How about marijuana tourism&#8221;? Although &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/pot-votes-co-wa-raise-specter-weed-tourism-100015982.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the future &#8230; is hazy<\/a>&#8221; (I imagine so!) in <strong>Colorado<\/strong> and <strong>Washington<\/strong>, it&#8217;s pretty clear that Nevada&#8217;s #1 cash crop is going unharvested by state authorities, who will desperately need new income sources as gambling continues to dwindle as a percentage of state revenue. You can scarcely throw a rock in Vegas without hitting a stoner and hookah lounges are all the rage. If puking drunkenness is tantamount to a public virtue here, how can pot be a vice? Besides, if Colorado has gambling <em>and<\/em> legal weed how does Sin City plan to counterpunch?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Although Election Day<\/strong> was an almost unmitigated disaster for <strong>Sheldon Adelson<\/strong>, he can, as is his wont, take comfort in the misfortunes of others. To wit, his <strong>Singapore<\/strong> rival, <strong>Resorts World Sentosa<\/strong> saw revenues plummet 20% (to $432 million last quarter). <strong>Genting<\/strong> may have built the first mousetrap in town but <strong>Marina Bay Sands<\/strong> has been gradually proving to be the better one.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This just in: It&#8217;s another winning strategy from those gaming-industry masterminds at Colony Capital.
