To be fair to the NIMBYs, Wynn&#8217;s proposed casino-lodge would have literally been in some of their back yards. And it must have been an eye-opening experience for the mogul to realize that the Foxburghers might like to visit a Steve Wynn casino but they sure as hell didn&#8217;t want to live near one.<\/p>\n<p>Initially, it looked like Wynn had taken his ball and gone home. However, the <strong>Boston<\/strong> area has drawn some pretty anemic competition for its one casino license. There&#8217;s the $1 billion smoke-and-mirrors proposal of\u00a0<strong>Suffolk Downs<\/strong> owner <strong>Richard T. Fields<\/strong> and <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> (who will probably be spurred to ever-more-brash spending promises with <strong>Wynn Resorts<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/yourtown\/news\/beverly\/2012\/11\/crosby_everett_casino_interest.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">breathing down their neck<\/a>). Then there&#8217;s the barely substantive <strong>David Nunes<\/strong> project further out in the &#8216;burbs. Asked what set his project apart, Wynn replied pithily, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/cdcgamingreports.com\/casino-mogul-visits-mass-city-to-discuss-casino\/?doing_wp_cron=1354752525.0000000000000000000000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">The developer<\/a>,&#8221; and we know damn well what he meant by that. Besides, it could take <strong>Pennsylvania<\/strong>&#8216;s gaming commission a full year to sort through six <strong>Philadelphia<\/strong> proposals &#8212; including Wynn&#8217;s &#8212; so El Steve has a bit of free time in which to contemplate other markets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Instead of rubbing elbows<\/strong> with the white-collar crowd that gave him the cold shoulder in Foxborough, Wynn <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/metrodesk\/2012\/11\/26\/vegas-mogul-steve-wynn-pursuing-everett-casino-site\/qEk3nfxtuLzgZwBXsk9P4N\/story.html?p1=Well_MostPop_Emailed4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">has set his sights upon blue-collar<\/a> <strong>Everett<\/strong> and <a href=\"http:\/\/boston.cbslocal.com\/2012\/11\/26\/steve-wynn-eyes-everett-as-possible-casino-site\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an in-need-of-remediation<\/a> <strong>Monsanto Chemical<\/strong> plot that the city would dearly love to unload. (<a href=\"http:\/\/bostonglobe.com\/metro\/2012\/11\/28\/casino-developer-steve-wynn-tours-everett-site-but-says-deal-made-build-there\/oLwfNRIMFpNYKeRwl4DSaM\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Who pays for cleanup of the site could be a sticking point<\/a>; Wynn says, &#8216;Not me!&#8217;) Vehicular access superior to that at <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-4251\" title=\"DeLeo_07212010\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DeLeo_07212010-300x261.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DeLeo_07212010-300x261.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DeLeo_07212010-150x130.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DeLeo_07212010.jpg 315w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Suffolk Downs is another Wynn selling point. If Everett voters approve &#8212; and early reaction <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/yourtown\/news\/everett\/2012\/11\/steve_wynn_to_tour_possible_ev.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">was largely favorable<\/a> &#8212; and if Bay State regulator-in-chief <strong>Stephen Crosby<\/strong> is serious about companies&#8217; balance sheets being an important selection criterion, Wynn should win this bid in a walk. By the same measurement, <strong>Mohegan Sun<\/strong>&#8216;s pitch for a casino in <strong>Palmer<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/cdcgamingreports.com\/mohegan-sun-casinos-post-sharply-lower-4q-profit\/?doing_wp_cron=1354753231.2848360538482666015625\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">ought to be a laughingstock<\/a>. However, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonherald.com\/news\/regional\/view\/20221129menino_slams_bay_states_long_casino_approval_process\/srvc=home&amp;position=recent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">Caesars has &#8220;juice&#8221;<\/a> in the form of Boston Mayor <strong>Thomas Menino<\/strong> and House Speaker <strong>Robert DeLeo<\/strong> (<em>left<\/em>), who has seemingly vowed to put slot machines into Suffolk Downs if it&#8217;s the last earthly thing he does. (Wynn&#8217;s contemplated site is five miles directly west of the Downs.)<\/p>\n<p>Wynn&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/bostonherald.com\/news\/regional\/view\/20221108everett_in_talks_with_hard_rock_for_casino\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">not the first major casino operator to have a look-see at Everett<\/a>. Both <strong>Hard Rock International<\/strong> and <strong>Neil Bluhm<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Rush Street Gaming<\/strong> kicked the tires but their hesitancy <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-8510\" title=\"Wynns\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Wynns-300x177.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"177\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Wynns-300x177.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Wynns-150x88.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Wynns.jpg 442w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>to commit has put Wynn at the front of the queue. Having already pulled out of <strong>Springfield<\/strong> (followed, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.masslive.com\/politics\/index.ssf\/2012\/12\/ameristar_casinos_says_springf.html#incart_2box#incart_m-rpt-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">quite acrimoniously<\/a>, by <strong>Ameristar Casinos<\/strong>), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.masslive.com\/news\/index.ssf\/2012\/11\/springfield_ward_1_residents_s.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">where local support appears solid<\/a>, Hard Rock claimed to be &#8220;serious&#8221; about Everett but evidently hasn&#8217;t quite been serious enough. Bluhm has gone off it altogether. Hard Rock dickered with <strong>Holyoke<\/strong>, out in western Massachusetts, but even though Mayor <strong>Alex Morse<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/cdcgamingreports.com\/mass-mayor-surprises-backers-with-casino-reversal\/?doing_wp_cron=1354749958.8626608848571777343750\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">did a 90-degree turn on the issue<\/a>, Hard Rock is no longer in the running (<strong>Seminole Gaming<\/strong> CEO<strong> Jim Allen<\/strong> reiterated that position to me last week). Instead, <a href=\"http:\/\/cdcgamingreports.com\/mass-mayor-surprises-backers-with-casino-reversal\/?doing_wp_cron=1354749958.8626608848571777343750\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">Morse will have to put his chips<\/a> on amusement park owner <strong>Eric Suher<\/strong>. (I know: &#8220;<em>Who?!?!?<\/em>&#8220;)<\/p>\n<p><strong>While Wynn, Caesars, <em>et al<\/em><\/strong> slug it out, <strong>New Hampshire<\/strong> might finally steal a march on the Bay State. One of gaming-related subplots that I overlooked during election season was that <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-10183\" title=\"Gov Hassan\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Gov-Hassan-113x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"113\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Gov-Hassan-113x150.jpg 113w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Gov-Hassan-227x300.jpg 227w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Gov-Hassan.jpg 364w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 113px) 100vw, 113px\" \/>the endlessly vacillating <strong>John Lynch<\/strong> (D) would finally be out of the governor&#8217;s mansion, clearing the way for a pro-racino successor. Recent convert <strong>Ovide Lamontagne<\/strong> (R) lost to longtime gambling supporter <strong>Maggie Hassan<\/strong> (D, <em>right<\/em>) but <strong>Salem<\/strong> racetrack <strong>Rockingham Park<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/cdcgamingreports.com\/pro-gambling-gov-doesnt-ensure-nh-will-get-casino\/?doing_wp_cron=1354753716.5193350315093994140625\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">was the clear winner<\/a>, as it&#8217;s the frontrunner for casino status, especially with <strong>Cannery Casino Resorts<\/strong> owners <strong>Bill Wortman<\/strong> and <strong>Bill Paulos<\/strong> vowing to invest $450 million. Hassan only wants one gambling hall in the state but lawmakers may have other ideas. They&#8217;ve got at least two years to beat Massachusetts to the punch but, had it not been for Lynch, they&#8217;d be in the game already.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-10181\" title=\"Kevin\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Kevin-120x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Kevin-120x150.jpg 120w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Kevin-241x300.jpg 241w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Kevin.jpg 621w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 120px) 100vw, 120px\" \/>It&#8217;s back to the bank<\/strong> for sorely troubled <strong>Revel<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.philly.com\/2012-11-29\/business\/35412864_1_casino-revenue-kevin-desanctis-contact-suzette-parmley#ixzz2DX2WCaYZ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">which needs another multi-million-dollar cash infusion<\/a> to keep the lights burning. Perhaps the $2.4 billion megaresort should get a mulligan this time, due to unforeseen circumstances better known as <strong>Hurricane Sandy<\/strong>. More importantly, it looks there&#8217;s been some housecleaning, with top managerial personnel getting the sack and a new marketing director, <strong>Darlene Monzo<\/strong>, being imported from <strong>Parx Casino<\/strong>, near Philly &#8212; a place that certainly knows how to eat <strong>Atlantic City<\/strong>&#8216;s lunch. Monzo&#8217;s challenge will be to reverse-engineer that formula to work for the Boardwalk.
