Shopping malls just don&#8217;t figure in the business plan of Ho or whoever is pulling <strong>Sociedade de Jogos de Macao<\/strong>&#8216;s strings these days.<\/p>\n<p>The casino oligarch even said in 2009 (before the numbers proved him wrong) that trying to emulate the styles of <strong>Atlantic City<\/strong> or <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> &#8212; two very different animals in and of themselves &#8212; &#8220;would not be a successful strategy.&#8221; And now he is paying the price, as <!--more-->mass-market business grows by a third every year. Ho&#8217;s <strong>Sociedade de Turismo e Diversoes de Macau<\/strong> won&#8217;t even be operating on the <strong>Cotai Strip<\/strong> until 2016, although its raggle-taggle collection of casinos in the older parts of the city still dominates Sands for VIP business.<\/p>\n<p><object id=\"ep_1424\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"416\" height=\"234\" codebase=\"https:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"wmode\" value=\"transparent\" \/><param name=\"bgcolor\" value=\"#000000\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"https:\/\/i.cdn.turner.com\/cnn\/.element\/apps\/cvp\/3.0\/swf\/cnn_embed_2x_container.swf?site=cnn&amp;profile=desktop&amp;context=embed&amp;videoId=international\/2012\/12\/03\/pkg-macau-broken-tooth.cnn&amp;contentId=international\/2012\/12\/03\/pkg-macau-broken-tooth.cnn\" \/><embed id=\"ep_1424\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"416\" height=\"234\" src=\"https:\/\/i.cdn.turner.com\/cnn\/.element\/apps\/cvp\/3.0\/swf\/cnn_embed_2x_container.swf?site=cnn&amp;profile=desktop&amp;context=embed&amp;videoId=international\/2012\/12\/03\/pkg-macau-broken-tooth.cnn&amp;contentId=international\/2012\/12\/03\/pkg-macau-broken-tooth.cnn\" bgcolor=\"#000000\" wmode=\"transparent\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p><strong>Another vestige of<\/strong> the Ho Era, the <strong>Triads<\/strong> are making evidently making their presence felt. <a href=\"ww.cnn.com\/2013\/06\/17\/world\/asia\/macau-dark-side\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">A gaming attorney was recently beaten with bricks<\/a> on a <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-5811\" title=\"ho_stanley\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/ho_stanley-150x112.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"112\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/ho_stanley-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/ho_stanley.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>public street. Even more brazenly, casino investor <strong>Ng Man-sun<\/strong> was attacked while dining in his own <strong>New Century Hotel<\/strong>, home to Ho&#8217;s <strong>Greek Mythology Casino<\/strong>. And Triad leader (and Ho associate) &#8220;<strong>Broken-Tooth Koi<\/strong>&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/video\/data\/2.0\/video\/international\/2012\/12\/03\/pkg-macau-broken-tooth.cnn.html\" target=\"_blank\">is free to roam the streets again<\/a>. Broken-Tooth&#8217;s smash-and-grab tactics are thought to be out of place in present-day Macao, but criminal involvement has found subtler means of asserting itself.<\/p>\n<p><strong>U.S.-owned casinos cannot<\/strong> extend credit in Macao, so they rely on <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-10551\" title=\"Sands-MACAO\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Sands-MACAO.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"330\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Sands-MACAO.jpg 330w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Sands-MACAO-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Sands-MACAO-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 330px) 100vw, 330px\" \/>junket firms (who can). But, according to former <strong>Hong Kong<\/strong> intelligence officer <strong>Steve Vickers<\/strong>, &#8220;You won&#8217;t find their names on the front but the hard reality is that Chinese junkets are largely controlled by Triad societies.&#8221; So the likes of <strong>Sands China<\/strong>, <strong>Wynn Resorts<\/strong> and <strong>MGM Resorts Internationa<\/strong>l must turn a blind eye to the very forces they are trying to elbow out of Macao. This <em>detente<\/em> is unlikely to hold the recent trend of outright thuggery continues to assert itself.
