{"id":118,"date":"2009-06-17T20:55:00","date_gmt":"2009-06-18T00:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/blogs\/dmckee\/index.cfm\/2009\/6\/17\/MGM-Deal-or-no-deal"},"modified":"2021-02-22T07:32:58","modified_gmt":"2021-02-22T15:32:58","slug":"mgm-deal-or-no-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/mgm-deal-or-no-deal\/","title":{"rendered":"MGM: Deal or no deal?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"\/userfiles\/Image\/slots_a_fun.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><strong>MGM Mirage<\/strong> CEO <strong>Jim Murren<\/strong> is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lvrj.com\/news\/breaking_news\/48278117.html\">re-mulling asset sales<\/a> of <strong>MGM Grand Detroit<\/strong>, <strong>Gold Strike<\/strong> (Tunica, Miss.) and <strong>Beau Rivage<\/strong>. But all Strip assets are definitively off the market (yes, even <strong>Slots A Fun<\/strong>). Since the Detroit and Tunica casinos are already encumbered with <strong>CityCenter<\/strong>-related debt, presumably Murren would transfer those mortgages to some or all of the &#8220;<strong>Mandalay mile<\/strong>.&#8221; As far as I know, those three casinos are still unencumbered. The Detroit resort would be a real &#8220;trophy asset&#8221; for any potential buyer &#8230; presuming that banks are more inclined to lend than they were(n&#8217;t) the last time Murren shopped this trio around.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Las Vegas Review-Journal<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lvrj.com\/business\/48240087.html\">took a good look<\/a> at MGM&#8217;s <strong>Giza<\/strong> deal &#8212; and it&#8217;s even better than initially thought. Not only will the company collect management <em>and<\/em> franchise fees, it also gets a cut of any profits. If there&#8217;s a downside here, I&#8217;m too myopic to see it.<\/p>\n<p>MGM wouldn&#8217;t sell <strong>Monte Carlo<\/strong> when <strong>Jack Binion<\/strong> came calling. One presumes this had more to do with potentially being able to extend CityCenter into Monte Carlo, rather than Jack&#8217;s money not being good enough for MGM. However, if the company really cares about the property,<!--more--> why are they slowly letting it go to seed? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/referenceguide-nightspotdetail.cfm?NightspotID=70&amp;type=Pub\/Microbrewery&amp;itemname=Brew Pub, The\">The Brew Pub<\/a> will close on July 12.<\/p>\n<p>Also &#8230; our <em>LVA<\/em> research team has discovered that no further <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/vacationplanner-showdetail.cfm?ShowID=46\" class=\"broken_link\"><strong>Lance Burton<\/strong><\/a> performances are scheduled. This seemingly writes <em>finis<\/em> to his long relationship with Monte Carlo. Is it just an expedient way to save money or was Burton&#8217;s unpardonable sin to get very good reviews from the local dailies right after <strong>Criss F. Angel<\/strong> laid an $85 million egg with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/vacationplanner-showdetail.cfm?ShowID=457\"><em>Believe<\/em><\/a>? Burton out and Angel in? That&#8217;s just not right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;IUER&#8221;? WTF?<\/strong> Don&#8217;t call <strong>Melco Crown International<\/strong>&#8216;s new <strong>City of Dreams<\/strong> a &#8220;casino.&#8221; Melcospeak for the new pleasure place is &#8220;integrated urban entertainment resort.&#8221; At least <strong>Steve Wynn<\/strong>&#8216;s &#8220;casino-based destination resort&#8221; coinage rolled off the tongue a little more felicitously. On second thought, just call it &#8220;a casino.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Holy cow!<\/strong> The husk of the late, lamented <strong>Holy Cow Brew Pub &amp; Casino<\/strong> (home of the best beer in <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong>) is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lasvegassun.com\/news\/2009\/jun\/17\/new-casino-development-prominent-lv-blvd-pr\">proposed for redevelopment<\/a> &#8212; again. It was briefly the site-to-be of the phantom <strong>Ivana<\/strong> condo tower, one of the more egregious examples of condo &#8220;vaporware&#8221; during the recent bubble. <strong>Arizona<\/strong>&#8211; and <strong>New Mexico<\/strong>-based developers intend to tip the old Cow and replace her with a low-rise, low-cost (no hotel) casino.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Strip needs<\/strong> some fresh mid-market casinos and this one could be it. But why make your anchor tenant a <strong>Walgreens<\/strong> when it&#8217;s the flagship retailer &#8230; of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz\/walgreens-las-vegas-2\" class=\"broken_link\"><strong>Palazzo<\/strong><\/a>. We sure could use the jobs, too, what with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lasvegassun.com\/news\/2009\/jun\/17\/nevadas-jobless-rate-hits-record-high-113-percent\">unemployment hitting record levels<\/a> in Nevada. A good thing that Gov. <strong>Jim Gibbons<\/strong> was shamed into accepting federal funding for the jobless.<\/p>\n<p><strong>No Surprise Dept.:<\/strong> So the <strong>Moulin Rouge<\/strong> is (literally) toast and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lasvegassun.com\/news\/2009\/jun\/17\/probe-moulin-rouge-fire-finds-human-link\">arson is suspected<\/a>. The fire happened the day after a bankruptcy auction <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lasvegasnow.com\/global\/story.asp?S=10314859\" class=\"broken_link\">f<\/a>ound no takers for the property.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Obama backpedals<\/strong> (sidepedals?) on gay rights. If he wants to give the country change it can believe in, how about revoking the profoundly un-American policy of throwing our LGBT brothers and sisters out of the military? If they&#8217;ve volunteered to lay down their lives for Old Glory, they&#8217;re better people than me. And if <strong>Harry Truman<\/strong> is remembered for nothing else, he&#8217;ll always be the president who integrated the military with a stroke of a pen. Does <strong>President Obama<\/strong> have Truman-like intenstinal fortitude?<\/p>\n<p><strong>One of the vilest<\/strong> of major-league baseball players back in the Eighties was slow-moving, philandering, showboating slugger <strong>Mel Hall<\/strong>. But we never knew <a href=\"http:\/\/hosted.ap.org\/dynamic\/stories\/B\/BBO_MEL_HALL_SEX_CASE?SITE=NVLAS&amp;SECTION=HOME&amp;TEMPLATE=DEFAULT\" class=\"broken_link\">just how loathsome<\/a> he was.
