{"id":11819,"date":"2013-10-16T13:09:09","date_gmt":"2013-10-16T21:09:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=11819"},"modified":"2018-09-01T13:17:02","modified_gmt":"2018-09-01T21:17:02","slug":"domino-theory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/domino-theory\/","title":{"rendered":"Domino Theory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While sledgehammers <a href=\"http:\/\/cdcgamingreports.com\/ny-casino-foes-smash-slot-machine-outside-capitol-ap\/#.Ul8HDlDOnw9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">were pointlessly falling<\/a> on a slot machine in <strong>Albany<\/strong> (<em>see below<\/em>), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/10\/17\/nyregion\/judge-rejects-suit-to-block-casino-referendum.html?src=recg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">a far more important melodrama was playing out nearb<\/a>y. Bankruptcy lawyer <strong>Eric Snyder<\/strong> had sought to block Proposal One, on the grounds that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2013-10-16\/n-y-gambling-referendum-language-suit-dismissed-by-judge.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">its language is too casino-friendly<\/a>. (It is pretty roseate.) However, he didn&#8217;t find a sympathetic ear from acting Supreme Court* Justice <strong>Richard Plakin<\/strong>. The latter threw Snyder&#8217;s challenge into the circular file, as it were, calling &#8220;untimely&#8221; and without merit. Snyder promises to appeal.<\/p>\n<p>Snyder had missed an Oct. 1 filing deadline, one of the reasons for <!--more-->Plakin&#8217;s rejection. The latter wasn&#8217;t buying Snyder&#8217;s dog-ate-my-homework argument that, because he heard about the ballot language after the deadline he should still get a day in court.<\/p>\n<p>*&#8211;contrary to its name, the Supreme Court is one of <strong>New York State<\/strong>&#8216;s lower-ranking judicial bodies. Snyder, incidentally, <a href=\"http:\/\/cdcgamingreports.com\/judge-rejects-ny-casino-referendum-challenge-ap\/#.UmAlUlDOnw9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">plans to appeal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/va_seal.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-11821\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/va_seal.gif\" alt=\"va_seal\" width=\"191\" height=\"189\" \/><\/a>New York<\/strong>, of course, already has casino gambling, but the number of states that won&#8217;t consider keeps falling. The toppling domino of the moment is <strong>Virginia<\/strong>. There, a legislative study estimates that the state could realize $113 million from a casino-resort in <strong>Hampton Roads<\/strong>. Already, the <strong>Family Foundation of Virginia<\/strong> is mobilizing in opposition, predicting that Hampton Roads will go the route of off-Boardwalk Atlantic City. However, with casino gambling already drawing off Virginians&#8217; money in <strong>West Virginia<\/strong>, <strong>North Carolina<\/strong> and <strong>Maryland<\/strong>, for starters, how long will it be until the Legislature wants in on the action?<\/p>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s the Night of the Long Knives<\/strong> over at the <strong>American Gaming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Geoff_Freeman.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-11820\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Geoff_Freeman.jpg\" alt=\"Geoff_Freeman\" width=\"239\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Geoff_Freeman.jpg 239w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Geoff_Freeman-119x150.jpg 119w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 239px) 100vw, 239px\" \/><\/a>Association<\/strong>, as bodies start hitting the floor. Yesterday, AGA President <strong>Geoff Freeman<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>left<\/em>) announced the sudden departure of Executive Director <strong>Judy Patterson<\/strong>. Freeman <a href=\"www.reviewjournal.com\/business\/american-gaming-associations-no-2-person-resigns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">had a few nice words for Patterson<\/a> and kept her tethered at a distance from the AGA as a consultant. But if I were Patterson, I wouldn&#8217;t sit by the phone waiting for Geoff to ring me up.
