At their suitability hearing with the <strong>Massachusetts Gaming Commission<\/strong> (which is expected to approve them), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/yourtown\/news\/east_boston\/2013\/10\/suffolk_downs_officials_appear_before_gaming_commission.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">they played dumb<\/a>. They <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/metro\/2013\/10\/29\/suffolk-downs-blindsided-caesars-background-check-troubles\/MPJ399SgZDSQmG3iaOwz6H\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\">not only pleaded ignorance<\/a> of <strong>Arik Kislin<\/strong>&#8216;s dubious business ties, they claimed ignorance of the <strong>Terrance K. Watanabe<\/strong> scandal. The latter not only made national headlines, it earned Caesars a $225,000 fine in <strong>New Jersey<\/strong>, even though the events in question took place on the Strip.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/suffolk-downs-casino-thumb-520x301-92384jpg-7517a160501587b8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-11145\" alt=\"suffolk-downs-casino-thumb-520x301-92384jpg-7517a160501587b8\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/suffolk-downs-casino-thumb-520x301-92384jpg-7517a160501587b8-300x173.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/suffolk-downs-casino-thumb-520x301-92384jpg-7517a160501587b8-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/suffolk-downs-casino-thumb-520x301-92384jpg-7517a160501587b8-150x86.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/suffolk-downs-casino-thumb-520x301-92384jpg-7517a160501587b8.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Suffolk Downs is also sticking to revenue projections of $1 billion\/year, of which <strong>Boston<\/strong> mayoral candidate <strong>Bill Walczak<\/strong> scoffingly said, &#8220;<em>This casino will have to clear more revenue than any casino in the Western Hemisphere<\/em>.&#8221; Be that as it may, voters will almost certainly have to vote on Suffolk Downs <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/yourtown\/news\/east_boston\/2013\/10\/suffolk_downs_says_it_may_not_have_new_operator_in_place_bef.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">without knowing who will be running its casino<\/a>. Whomever it turns out to be will be bound to <!--more-->terms already agreed to by Caesars, whether they like it or not. Opponents, meanwhile, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/metro\/2013\/10\/22\/the-suffolk-downs-casino-deal-may-falling-apart-and-that-not-bad-news\/46XU1s97dGlnQk2NlGP5rN\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\">are taking a premature victory lap<\/a>. Hell, they can&#8217;t even spell &#8220;Caesar&#8217;s [<em>sic<\/em>!]&#8221; correctly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kislin, meanwhile, is causing trouble<\/strong> as far away as obscure <strong>Cripple Creek<\/strong>, <strong>Colorado<\/strong>. There, he was trying to obtain a license to invest in <strong>Big Jim&#8217;s Gambling Hall &amp; Saloon<\/strong>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2013-10-30\/colorado-officials-tell-casino-to-cut-ties-to-gansevoort-backer.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">Not so fast, say regulators<\/a>. Strangely, casino manager <strong>James Druck<\/strong> says he had never spoken with nor met Kislin, even though the latter had lent money to the casino. (It&#8217;s amazing how many people get in bed with this guy without so much as a &#8216;hello.&#8217;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>The German court documents referenced in some media reports never mention Arik Kislin and never linked him to any criminal activity, and other reports are decades old, stemming from a time when Arik Kislin was in his early 20s and did business with individuals in the former <strong>Soviet Union<\/strong><\/em>,&#8221; said his spokesman.<\/p>\n<p>Caesars Entertainment&#8217;s 3Q13 conference call with analysts brought <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/business\/analysts-press-loveman-exit-boston-area-casino-project\" target=\"_blank\">some predictable huffing and puffing<\/a> from CEO <strong>Gary Loveman<\/strong>. Never <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/loveman.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7750\" alt=\"loveman\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/loveman.jpg\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>mind that Suffolk Downs pushed Caesars under the bus or that Loveman dropped <strong>Gansevoort Hotel Group<\/strong> like a bad habit after things went sideways in <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong>. Loveman focused all his wrath on Bay State regulators, complaining that he never had a chance to make things right with them. (Not that Suffolk owner <strong>Richard Fields<\/strong> gave him much choice in the matter.) In spite of the sky-high revenue projections made by Caesars for the casino, Loveman said, \u201cWe have turned our focus back to our ongoing development and repositioning efforts, <em>which are greater catalysts for enhancing the company\u2019s performance<\/em>.&#8221; [emphasis added] Yeah, <strong>Baltimore<\/strong>&#8216;s gonna turn it all around.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/business\/analysts-press-loveman-exit-boston-area-casino-project\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As Caesars totters from crisis to problem, the <strong>Internal Revenue Service<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2013-10-29\/irs-cited-caesars-for-bank-secrecy-act-breach.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">made public its citation of the company<\/a>, include Bank Secrecy Act violations. <strong>FinCen<\/strong> executive <strong>Jennifer Shaskey Calvery<\/strong> painted the citation as part of a wider war being fought by casinos&#8217; compliance divisions, telling <strong>Bloomberg News<\/strong> &#8220;<em>that executives in charge of regulatory compliance are being overruled by officials in other departments<\/em>.&#8221; Even without the IRS probe, Caesars is a mess and it&#8217;s long past time for Loveman to resign in favor of someone who can put its house in order.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Suffolk Downs executives are trying to move on after severing ties with Caesars Entertainment.
