{"id":12097,"date":"2013-11-20T10:20:44","date_gmt":"2013-11-20T18:20:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=12097"},"modified":"2021-11-14T08:46:54","modified_gmt":"2021-11-14T16:46:54","slug":"foxwoods-massachusetts-all-the-kings-horses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/foxwoods-massachusetts-all-the-kings-horses\/","title":{"rendered":"Foxwoods Massachusetts: All the king&#8217;s horses &#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In what must be the shortest-lived deal in <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong>&#8216;s history, its nascent partnership with <strong>Foxwoods Resort Casino<\/strong> went down to defeat yesterday. <strong>Crossroads Massachusetts<\/strong>, as it was called, didn&#8217;t just lose &#8212; it was crushed. An unofficial tabulation has Foxwoods taking it on the chin, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.milforddailynews.com\/news\/x348810484\/Milford-casino-supporters-call-vote-a-missed-opportunity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">35% to 65%<\/a>. Unlike cities such as <strong>Everett<\/strong> and <strong>Springfield<\/strong>, Foxwoods&#8217; host community of <strong>Milford<\/strong> just didn&#8217;t feel the need the infusion of casino dollars. Opponents can congratulate themselves on having organized early and for waging a 10-month campaign against gambling, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/news\/local\/massachusetts\/2013\/11\/20\/mass-town-votes-down-foxwoods-casino-proposal\/hQVCXIyRyQROVD2IZ5T6pM\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">earning an electoral jackpot<\/a> (for them, if not for the Milford economy). Not all of the opponents were anti-gambling <em>per se<\/em>. Said one, &#8220;<em>We&#8217;re not against the casino, that&#8217;s just not the right spot for it<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Crossroads-MA.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-12099\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Crossroads-MA-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"Foxwoods renderings for proposed Milford Casino\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Crossroads-MA-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Crossroads-MA-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Crossroads-MA.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Foxwoods CEO <strong>Scott Butera<\/strong> was gracious in defeat. &#8220;<em>Throughout this process we&#8217;ve gotten to know Milford and thousands of its residents. While we worked hard to offer a resort casino we believe would benefit the area, the town made a decision similar to many other communities across the state<\/em>,&#8221; he said. Implicit in his statement is the fact that much of <!--more--><strong>Massachusetts<\/strong> is rejecting casino gambling much as a body might repel a kidney transplant. The Bay State&#8217;s culture, one of America&#8217;s oldest and most deeply entrenched, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.masslive.com\/news\/worcester\/index.ssf\/2013\/11\/milford_casino_vote_residents.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">simply may not be ready for casinos<\/a>. Industry leaders might want to take <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/metro\/2013\/11\/15\/casino-opponents-push-ballot-measure-repeal-state-gaming-law\/eMG5ttTFtkZLNW5SMJsD1K\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">that repeal campaign<\/a>\u00a0very seriously.<a href=\"http:\/\/articles.courant.com\/2013-11-19\/business\/hc-milford-foxwoods-vote-1120-20131119_1_casino-license-casino-measure-casino-free-milford\" class=\"broken_link\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>I think people are afraid of the unknown<\/em>,&#8221; Butera told <strong>The Associated Press<\/strong>. &#8220;<em>They are not these crazy hedonistic places. They\u2019re actually very nice resorts that have a lot more to do with just games<\/em>.&#8221; That misperception had a lot more to do with Foxwoods&#8217; defeat than did its near-meltdown last week, which was just the cherry on the icing. Foxwoods may be back, in another Massachusetts locale, but it needs to get its act together first.<\/p>\n<p>So now there are three. <strong>MGM Springfield<\/strong> and <strong>Wynn Resorts<\/strong>&#8216; Everett project are voter-approved and have finished proposals now before the <strong>Massachusetts Gaming Commission<\/strong>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/business\/2013\/11\/20\/stephen-crosby-perhaps-scariest-gaming-regulator-america\/zZXFgCK8nyc7GPkcuNEWgI\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The latter has not blessed either, yet<\/a>. <strong>Suffolk Downs<\/strong> has approval to operate but no project concept and no operating partner. It&#8217;s all rather a mess and I&#8217;m sure commissioners will be happier to take on the slot parlor first, where Penn National, <strong>Cordish Gaming<\/strong> and <strong>Greenwood<\/strong> <strong>Racing<\/strong> all have their ducks lined up neatly.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In what must be the shortest-lived deal in Penn National Gaming&#8216;s history, its nascent partnership with Foxwoods Resort Casino went down to defeat yesterday.
