{"id":12242,"date":"2013-12-12T10:21:50","date_gmt":"2013-12-12T18:21:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=12242"},"modified":"2020-09-10T06:06:51","modified_gmt":"2020-09-10T14:06:51","slug":"sioux-city-mess","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/sioux-city-mess\/","title":{"rendered":"Sioux City mess"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Hard Rock International<\/strong> and <strong>Sioux City Entertainment<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.omaha.com\/article\/20131212\/NEWS\/131219614\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">find themselves in a pickle<\/a> not of their own making in <strong>Iowa<\/strong>. Due to a rupture between <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong> and nonprofit\u00a0<strong>Missouri River Historical Development<\/strong>, holder of the casino license, Penn found itself having to rebid for the casino. It made the mistake of dividing its forces in the face of numerically superior opposition (there were at least two rival bids), submitting two projects. The <strong>Iowa Racing &amp; Gaming Commission<\/strong> chose neither &#8212; in no small part because they weren&#8217;t downtown. Instead it went with the in-progress <strong>Hard Rock Hotel &amp; Casino<\/strong> (<em>below<\/em>),\u00a0which had partnered with MRHD.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Hard-Rock-Sioux-City.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-12250\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Hard-Rock-Sioux-City-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"Hard Rock Sioux City\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Hard-Rock-Sioux-City-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Hard-Rock-Sioux-City-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Hard-Rock-Sioux-City.jpg 598w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>And it may get taken away &#8212; or sold under duress. (&#8220;As far as the city goes, there is not going to be any negative,&#8221; said Mayor<strong> Bob Scott<\/strong>.)\u00a0A planned July opening is now off the table and must await the resolution of litigation between Penn and state regulators. The former maintain that they have exclusive rights over the market, even if their <em>Argosy Sioux City<\/em> riverboat has to be retired. Of course, <!--more-->Penn parent <strong>Gaming &amp; Leisure Properties Inc<\/strong>. could try to make the whole thing go away by purchasing the Hard Rock project, but there&#8217;s been no hint of any such thing taking place. Since Sioux City Entertainment has been restoring the historic <strong>Battery Building<\/strong> as its casino site, Scott and others will have a vested interest in having <em>somebody&#8217;s<\/em> casino go in there, <a href=\"http:\/\/siouxcityjournal.com\/news\/local\/sioux-city-paid-first-m-installment-to-hard-rock-developer\/article_7a8c2d32-7803-5a52-9395-94fbadd9909e.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">especially since the city is on the hook for millions<\/a> in development incentives.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MotorCity Casino<\/strong> is creeping up on <strong>MGM Grand Detroit<\/strong>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crainsdetroit.com\/article\/20131211\/NEWS\/131219958\/detroit-casinos-revenue-up-slightly-for-month-but-remains-down-for#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">It&#8217;s also defying the trend<\/a> of losing business to <strong>Ohio<\/strong>. MotorCity was up 3%, while <strong>MGM Grand Detroit<\/strong> and <strong>Greektown Casino<\/strong> were both down by the same percentage.<\/p>\n<p>VLTs continue to trump slots in the Buckeye State. <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>ThistleDown<\/strong> racino is dwarfing the casino competition with $361\/slot\/day. Now two more racinos are preparing to crash the party. <strong>Hard Rock Rocksino in Northfield Park<\/strong> (whew!) offers such piquant attractions as heated sidewalks and outdoor VLTs. Just 10 miles away from ThistleDown, Northfield Park has its work cut out for it. Today is also the first day of VLT play at <strong>Miami Valley Gaming<\/strong>, near <strong>Lebanon<\/strong>. The latter is touting recliners on the slot floor and what it regards as a state-of-the-art bonusing system.
