But <strong>Derek Stevens<\/strong> is bitcoin-enabling both the <strong>Golden Gate<\/strong> and <strong>The D<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fresnobee.com\/2014\/01\/21\/3724553\/2-vegas-hotel-casinos-to-start.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">to accept the cyber-currency in selected parts of his properties<\/a>, starting Jan. 22. Stevens is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/New-Golden-Gate.jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-10831\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/New-Golden-Gate.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"New Golden Gate.jpg\" width=\"347\" height=\"222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/New-Golden-Gate.jpg.jpg 347w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/New-Golden-Gate.jpg-150x95.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/New-Golden-Gate.jpg-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 347px) 100vw, 347px\" \/><\/a>crediting customer input for impelling him to make the change.\u00a0For instance, you can use it to pay for your hotel room or for on-property meals at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/referenceguide-diningdetail.cfm?DiningID=1435\">American Coney Island<\/a> and Joe Vicari&#8217;s Andiamo Steak House, not to mention stuff from the schlock shop. But no gambling. \u00a0&#8220;<em>We would have to have an extremely high level of comfort with virtual currency of this kind in order for that to ever occur<\/em>,&#8221; said <strong>Nevada Gaming Control Board<\/strong> Chairman <strong>A.G. Burnett<\/strong>. Indeed, Nevada regulators have balked at <!--more-->putting ATMs and other direct-debit technologies into slot machines, so I can see them approaching this with a similar abundance of caution. But the limited manner in which Stevens has integrated bitcoin is likely to spawn a rapid amount of imitators.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Could Chinese<\/strong> tourists forego <strong>Macao<\/strong> for <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong>? Everyone around here surely hopes so and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macaubusiness.com\/news\/macau%E2%80%99s-share-of-mainland-tourists-could-shrink.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">rising living standards on the mainland<\/a> could make it happen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When not<\/strong> building casinos, <strong>Cordish Cos<\/strong>. is working with the City of Las Vegas <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vegasinc.com\/business\/2014\/jan\/21\/joe-downtown-study-finds-downtown-arena-could-net-\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">to try and develop an arena<\/a> for Downtown. Some question the numbers underlying the deal as blue-sky projections. It is worth noting that the nearby <strong>Smith Center for the Performing Arts<\/strong> has had to cut back on the number of events held during its second season &#8212; nothing catastrophic but enough to make one view Cordish&#8217;s plans with a touch of skepticism. Also, and in view of Cordish&#8217;s casino success elsewhere, Downtown casinos are unlikely to welcome the parent of <strong>Maryland Live<\/strong>, especially when the cost of the arena is coming partly out of their pockets.<\/p>\n<p>Between the Great Recession and new competition from <strong>Ohio<\/strong>, the State of <strong>Indiana<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/cdcgamingreports.com\/ind-casino-taxes-falling-faster-than-anticipated-ap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">is seeing considerably less in casino-tax contributions<\/a>. &#8220;<em>People don\u2019t have as much disposable income, they don\u2019t have as much money they can spend. They used to choose between going to a high school basketball game or the casino. Now, it\u2019s between going to the casino or paying their mortgage<\/em>,&#8221; says <em>Indiana Gaming Insight<\/em> Editor <strong>Ed Feigenbaum<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Sticking its nose into <strong>Saratoga Springs<\/strong>&#8216; business, the <em>New York Times<\/em> offers a predictable blast of high, Victorian dudgeon of the idea of a racino in the resort town.
