Empire is a stalking horse for <strong>Genting Group<\/strong>, which explains the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/03\/14\/nyregion\/empire-resorts-unveils-plan-for-750-million-casino-upstate.html?_r=1\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">megaresort budget of $750 million<\/a>. Beyond gambling &#8212; 2,150 slots and 32 tables &#8212; Adelaar (Dutch for &#8220;Eagle&#8221;) would offer &#8220;an entertainment hall, spa and shops, as well as an 18-hole golf course and family resort featuring a conference center, an indoor water park and an outdoor adventure park &#8230; Plans call for several hotels, a snow tube run, zip lines and a mountain coaster.&#8221; And they say <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2014\/mar\/13\/developers-to-detail-proposal-for-catskills-casino\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">they could get started within a month<\/a> of approval. That&#8217;s because they&#8217;ve already been working on pulling permits.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <em>New York Times<\/em>, Empire and EPR are moving quickly, to try and thwart <strong>Cordish Gaming<\/strong> and <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong>, both of whom <!--more-->covet sites in <strong>Orange County<\/strong>, closer to <strong>New York City<\/strong>. If Penn and\/or Cordish get into contention, that might scare off the bankers that Empire and EPR need on their side. They&#8217;ve got an ally in casino-expansion author state Sen. <strong>John J. Bonacic<\/strong> (R), who tells the <em>Times<\/em>,\u00a0\u201cIt was our intent to help upstate counties that had high unemployment and low median income.\u00a0I don\u2019t think Orange County fits into that category.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The<em> Times<\/em> predicts that a nonrefundable, $1 million application will scare off many of the developers who are talking up casino projects right now.
