Following the guidance of their own studies, <a href=\"http:\/\/cdcgamingreports.com\/gaming-commission-rejects-cedar-rapids-casino\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">they shot down<\/a> the <strong>Cedar Crossing Casino<\/strong> project, citing its adverse economic impact on other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Cedar-Crossing.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-13330\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Cedar-Crossing-300x120.jpg\" alt=\"Cedar Crossing\" width=\"300\" height=\"120\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Cedar-Crossing-300x120.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Cedar-Crossing-150x60.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Cedar-Crossing.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>casinos in the area. Dissenting commissioner <strong>Dolores Mertz<\/strong> called for a &#8220;market-driven&#8221; casino industry in the Hawkeye State: \u201c<em>As a farmer, if I really believe that in agriculture, I\u2019d be really remiss not to do that in gaming<\/em>.\u201d If they&#8217;re going to go to <strong>Nevada<\/strong>-style survival-of-the-fittest mode, they&#8217;ll need to go to a new process and set of criteria for approving casinos. As it is, the <strong>Iowa Racing &amp; Gaming Commission<\/strong> is charged with preserving the financial health of the industry and Cedar Crossing didn&#8217;t pass that test.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Beyond dismayed.&#8221;<\/strong> That&#8217;s how <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong> expressed its reaction to the denial of its <strong>Argosy Sioux City<\/strong> supplication. Penn was appealing <!--more-->the loss of its license (due to the loss of its nonprofit partner) and requested a one-year extension. It&#8217;s also tried &#8212; and failed &#8212; to halt construction of a <strong>Hard Rock<\/strong>-branded casino in downtown <strong>Sioux City<\/strong>. Penn may yet take the IRGC to court but, as of now, <a href=\"http:\/\/cdcgamingreports.com\/iowa-commission-denies-sioux-city-casinos-appeal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">has until July 1 to surrender the keys<\/a> to Argosy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressofatlanticcity.com\/business\/caesars-sells-atlantic-city-country-club-to-ottinger-family\/article_6c6c8120-c585-11e3-8027-0019bb2963f4.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">continues to sell assets<\/a>. The latest is an <strong>Atlantic City<\/strong> golf course with an historic cachet.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/pat-quinn.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-13331\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/pat-quinn.jpg\" alt=\"pat quinn\" width=\"307\" height=\"372\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/pat-quinn.jpg 307w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/pat-quinn-123x150.jpg 123w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/pat-quinn-247x300.jpg 247w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 307px) 100vw, 307px\" \/><\/a>Illinois may not<\/strong> be able to defer the issue of casino expansion much longer. Gov. <strong>Pat Quinn <\/strong>(D, <em>left<\/em>) is keeping his powder dry but a temporary tax increase is slated to sunset in January, giving legislators motivation to approve more slot machines &#8212; and soon. Pensions, education, infrastructure are three hungry mouths that have to be fed. But one hangup is a provision to give the state ownership of a <strong>Chicago<\/strong> casino, something that&#8217;s against existing <strong>Illinois<\/strong> law.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em><strong>Caleb Melamed<\/strong>, an attorney for the <strong>Illinois Gaming Board<\/strong> &#8230;\u00a0also questioned the size of the Chicago casino, saying the proposed 10,000 gambling positions would make it the largest casino in the world. Supporters contended there was enough demand to support a gambling operation of that size in Chicago<\/em>.&#8221; When you put it that way, state Rep. <strong>Robert Rita<\/strong>&#8216;s proposal for a smaller Chicago casino and four outlying ones seems downright sensible. (<a href=\"http:\/\/cdcgamingreports.com\/chicago-casino-plan-draws-more-support-at-hearing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">Perhaps this was Rita&#8217;s intent all along<\/a>.) Wannabe racinos say it&#8217;s 900-1,200 slots apiece for them &#8212; and no exclusion of any track &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nwitimes.com\/news\/local\/illinois\/chicago\/horse-racing-industry-wants-more-out-of-casino-expansion-legislation\/article_4549ad04-04e0-5add-80fe-90af905038a7.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">or they won&#8217;t play ball<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, the <strong>Chicago Crime Commission<\/strong> weighed in against state ownership and in favor of a private-sector solution to a Chicago casino. Sites under consideration are <strong>Macy&#8217;s<\/strong>, the <strong>James R. Thompson Building<\/strong> and the <strong>Congress Plaza Hotel<\/strong>. Mayor <strong>Rahm Emanuel<\/strong>, however, has taken a vow of silence on the issue until issues with the city&#8217;s pension fund are resolved.<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers, given the choice between budget cuts which hurt their constituents and casino expansion (which hurts other casinos), may find this whole thing a no-brainer.
