Legislators who note that the current compact doesn&#8217;t sunset until next year wonder what&#8217;s the rush. Others fear that Scott has given away the store &#8212; an impression not helped by the deep secrecy in which negotiations have been cloaked. State Democrats, kept in the dark, wonder why they should do anything to help the GOP governor. And private-sector casino interests don&#8217;t see any goodies forthcoming for them. <strong>Sheldon Adelson<\/strong> has turned off the Scott cash spigot, as has <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong>.\u00a0Solons fear that South Florida megaresorts are off the table, as it parimutuel expansion. They also fret that not only will the Seminoles keep blackjack, their game repertory will expand to include craps and roulette. (Of course, if destination casinos were legalized with those games, the Seminoles would have to be given them, too.) What looked like bold initiative has turned into an embarrassing gubernatorial face-plant.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Speaking of Adelson<\/strong>, 10 conservative groups opened a verbal can of whup-ass on his <!--more-->attempt to get <strong>Internet<\/strong> gambling outlawed. In an open letter to four congressional chairmen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Sheldon-Palpatine1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-9939\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Sheldon-Palpatine1-300x211.jpg\" alt=\"Sheldon Palpatine\" width=\"300\" height=\"211\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Sheldon-Palpatine1-300x211.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Sheldon-Palpatine1-150x105.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Sheldon-Palpatine1.jpg 405w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>and ranking members, they ripped Adelson&#8217;s minions on <strong>Capitol Hill<\/strong> but good. In addition to familiar arguments about the preferability of legal, regulated Internet gambling to its black-market alternative, they leaned heavily on the 10th Amendment to the Bill of Rights. That&#8217;s the one that reserves for the states any rights not specifically enumerated or banned in the Constitution. States that legalize medical marijuana, for instance, do so under the umbrella of the 10th Amendment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>H.R. 4301 also creates carve-outs that exempt certain special interests from the\u00a0federal government\u2019s reach<\/em>,&#8221; read the letter, in part. &#8220;<em>This amounts to the federal\u00a0government picking winners and losers\u2013choosing select industries or private-sector businesses to\u00a0succeed at the expense of others,\u00a0which is at\u00a0odds with free-market competition<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Chaffetz.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-13058\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Chaffetz.jpg\" alt=\"Chaffetz\" width=\"207\" height=\"243\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Chaffetz.jpg 207w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Chaffetz-127x150.jpg 127w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 207px) 100vw, 207px\" \/><\/a>Michelle Minton<\/strong> followed up with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openmarket.org\/2014\/04\/28\/republican-internet-gambling-ban-undermines-states-and-individual-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a fairly thorough demolition<\/a> of the efforts by Sen. <strong>Lindsey Graham<\/strong> (R-S.C.) and Rep. <strong>Jason Chaffetz<\/strong> (R-UT). She cites analysis of H.R. 4301 that notes its <a href=\"http:\/\/reason.com\/blog\/2014\/04\/01\/the-faux-federalism-of-the-chaffetz-grah\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">several rewrites<\/a> of the Federal Wire Act, concluding that it&#8217;s an attempt to codify a superseded <a href=\"http:\/\/reason.com\/blog\/2014\/04\/01\/the-faux-federalism-of-the-chaffetz-grah\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">interpretation<\/a> of the law. Most of Adelson&#8217;s congressional champions are also advocates of the &#8216;federalism&#8217; movement, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lgraham.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm?FuseAction=PressRoom.PressReleases&amp;ContentRecord_id=883798cb-b3bc-fac6-3bb1-923ed30baf3c&amp;Region_id=&amp;Issue_id=230affd5-5681-42e0-931\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">which puts them at odds with themselves<\/a> where the Wire Act is concerned. &#8220;Will Chaffetz attempt to impose <strong>Utah<\/strong>&#8216;s\u00a0alcohol regulations on the rest of the country,&#8221; Minton asks, adding, &#8220;What about other forms of Internet commerce?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When websites are regulated by American authorities, they have an incentive to obey our laws and offer remedy when consumers are victimized or they risk losing their license and access to our customers.
