Dotty&#8217;s owner <strong>Craig Estey<\/strong> is alleging <a href=\"http:\/\/cdcgamingreports.com\/commentaries\/amid-dispute-station-considered-buying-dottys\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">a Feb. 5, 2013 meeting at which Station made a play<\/a> for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/station1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3383\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/station1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"station1\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/station1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/station1-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/station1.jpg 340w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>dozens of demi-casinos which it has long held are illegal under <strong>Nevada<\/strong> law. Station CFO <strong>Marc Falcone<\/strong> allegedly offered 7X cash flow for the little grind joints, whose storefront-business\u00a0model has been the bane of Station&#8217;s existence. But, conceding that &#8220;preliminary business meetings&#8221; had been held with Dotty&#8217;s, Station President <strong>Steve Cavallaro<\/strong> has denied that any &#8220;formal&#8221; offer was made. He also says no <em>extensive<\/em> examination of Dotty&#8217;s documents was conducted. He does confirm that Falcone returned from a meeting with Estey, bearing the industry-standard 7X EBITDA number and Cavarallo rejected it as to high.<\/p>\n<p>The important words here seem to be &#8220;formal&#8221; and &#8220;extensive.&#8221; Cavallaro has\u00a0a fiduciary duty\u00a0to look at anything that might improve the value of Station. Scarfing up the <!--more-->extensive Dotty&#8217;s chain would capture a lot of casual-player revenue, so it wouldn&#8217;t surprise me if Station didn&#8217;t discuss such an acquisition, at least in theoretical terms. As the <em>Las Vegs Review-Journal<\/em>&#8216;s <strong>Steve Sebelius<\/strong> writes, &#8220;Even so, a Station-owned Dotty\u2019s chain would seemingly still represent everything Station currently abjures: Ubiquitous, less costly slot outlets that ostensibly take business from larger, more expensive casinos.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>A perfect confluence<\/strong> of events <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/business\/tourism\/harsh-winter-helps-push-las-vegas-toward-record-tourist-numbers\" target=\"_blank\">drove Vegas to a potent first quarter<\/a>. It probably goes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Linq-revised.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-9495\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Linq-revised-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"Linq revised\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Linq-revised-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Linq-revised-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Linq-revised.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>without saying that severe weather to north, where customers were socked in by the polar vortex, drove a fair amount of traffic. However, the <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> area also enjoyed a bumper crop of conventions, including the biggest of the bunch: triennial\u00a0<strong>ConExpo-Con\/Agg<\/strong>. Those who were here for tourism had not only to check out the <strong>Linq<\/strong> (a smaller, less-crowded and more-charming offshoot of the Strip) but the <strong>Vegas High Roller<\/strong>, which is exceeding ridership expectations. Throw in three basketball tournaments, the <strong>Super Bowl<\/strong> and <strong>Chinese New Year<\/strong> and 2014 is off to one of the strongest starts in Vegas history. Especially impressive was Vegas&#8217; top ranking for occupancy in the U.S., considering the enormous number of hotel rooms Sin City has to fill.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Affinity Gaming<\/strong> isn&#8217;t well-named. It seems mainly to have an affinity for screwups. Its credit- and debit-card processing system was cracked again. Affinity is saying no customer information was stolen but that was was the <strong>Venetian<\/strong>&#8216;s original story, too, when it was hacked and they had to walk it back several times. A previous breach went undetected for seven months. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/business\/casinos-gaming\/affinity-gaming-reports-second-data-breach\" target=\"_blank\">No word on how bad it was this time<\/a>. Having been skunked by an adversary, Affinity could only say,\u00a0\u201cWe also will continue to evolve and enhance our system security, in response to new and emerging threats.\u201d Isn&#8217;t it a bit late for that?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So, did Station Casinos bid for its gadfly, the Dotty&#8217;s chain of slot parlors or didn&#8217;t it?
