{"id":13545,"date":"2014-05-09T11:28:20","date_gmt":"2014-05-09T19:28:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=13545"},"modified":"2014-05-09T11:28:20","modified_gmt":"2014-05-09T19:28:20","slug":"loveman-utters-heresy-adelsons-sock-puppet-theatre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/loveman-utters-heresy-adelsons-sock-puppet-theatre\/","title":{"rendered":"Loveman utters heresy; Adelson&#8217;s sock-puppet theatre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Buried deep in <strong>Caesars Entertainments<\/strong> &#8216;s 1Q14 earnings call was this bombshell from CEO Gary Loveman:\u00a0\u201c<em>We are looking at all of our options to reduce the cost of doing business here.\u00a0All the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/loveman.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7750\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/loveman.jpg\" alt=\"loveman\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>businesses in [Atlantic City]\u00a0are under tremendous pressure<\/em>.\u201d That&#8217;s not exactly a death sentence for the <strong>Showboat<\/strong> but it got people to sit up and take notice. (Why then has Caesars been playing footsie with <strong>Revel<\/strong>?)\u00a0<em>S&amp;G<\/em> has to give Loveman props for the bravery it took to say that &#8220;<em>markets can reach points when no new supply is indeed the right answer.\u00a0In some cases reducing supply is the right answer. That\u2019s the normal, self-correcting healing that you\u2019d like to see in a market like this<\/em>,\u201d In the casino industry that&#8217;s heresy. To hear most execs &#8212; and many Wall Street analysts &#8212; tell it, new supply is <em>always<\/em> the right answer.<\/p>\n<p>Loveman also announced that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2014-05-07\/caesars-weighs-closing-atlantic-city-casinos.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">guarantees were being taken off much of its debt<\/a>. That&#8217;s a move that must have bondholders&#8217; innards in a twist, as the company continues to struggle.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/posttv\/c\/embed\/17cf3ab0-be58-11e3-9ee7-02c1e10a03f0\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sheldon Adelson<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/adelsons-political-beneficiaries-attack-casino-magnates-bete-noire-internet-gambling\/2014\/05\/07\/7ff15aba-cf1a-11e3-937f-d3026234b51c_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">added another big-name minion to his campaign<\/a> against <strong>Internet<\/strong> gambling last month when <!--more--><strong>Florida<\/strong> Gov. <strong>Rick Scott<\/strong> (R) took time out from negotiating to potentially expand gambling in his state to write <strong>Congress<\/strong> that Internet play would\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<em>invade the homes of every American family, and be piped in to our dens, living rooms, workplaces and even our kids bedrooms and dorm rooms<\/em>.\u201d (No, not dorm rooms, those temples of purity!) Scott&#8217;s statement &#8212; probably drafted somewhere deep within <strong>Las Vegas Sands<\/strong> &#8212; was followed by absolutely\u00a0identical missives from <strong>Texas<\/strong> Gov. <strong>Rick Perry<\/strong>\u00a0(R) and <strong>South Carolina<\/strong> Gov. <strong>Nikki Haley<\/strong> (R). That&#8217;s an impressive feat of sock puppetry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Bobby-Jindal_1356190c.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-5887\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Bobby-Jindal_1356190c-300x187.jpg\" alt=\"Bobby-Jindal_1356190c\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Bobby-Jindal_1356190c-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Bobby-Jindal_1356190c-150x93.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Bobby-Jindal_1356190c.jpg 460w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Adelson&#8217;s stooges also include <strong>Louisiana<\/strong> Gov. <strong>Bobby Jindal<\/strong> (R, left), who at least had the enterprise to write his own op-ed, and <strong>Indiana<\/strong> Gov. <strong>Mike Pence<\/strong> (R). The latter&#8217;s argument was that Indiana couldn&#8217;t regulate intrastate activity, making federal intervention imperative. Adelson&#8217;s #1 water boy on <strong>Capitol Hill<\/strong>, Sen. <strong>Lindsey Graham<\/strong> (R-S.C.) couldn&#8217;t even be bothered to draft his own bill but introduced one penned by a Sands employee. Adelson&#8217;s even bedded down with <strong>Jack Abramoff<\/strong> crony <strong>Ralph Reed<\/strong>, whose not been averse to taking gambling money in the past, even when nominally opposed to casinos.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Adelson got his hands<\/strong> on <a href=\"http:\/\/cdcgamingreports.com\/poll-us-split-on-legal-pot-against-online-bets\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">somewhat more impressive ammo<\/a> with the release of a\u00a0<strong>Fairleigh Dickinson University PublicMind<\/strong> poll. It found only 27% support for legalized Internet play, compared to 50% who favored marijuana legalization (another subject that sends Adelson into old-coot outrage). The poll found only 35% awareness of the issue, which legal pot is pretty high on the public&#8217;s radar screen, with 86% following it in the news. The poll had a large sample (1,151 souls) and a 3% margin of error, so I think we can take its findings as reliable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New Hampshire<\/strong> casinos aren&#8217;t dead, <a href=\"http:\/\/cdcgamingreports.com\/3rd-time-not-the-charm-on-casino-bill-in-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">merely comatose<\/a>. Even though the House of Representatives voted not to reconsider reconsidering its negative verdict on the issue (which lost by one vote), there&#8217;s still hope, amazingly: Some form of gambling bill could be revived from life support before the June 5 adjournment, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.concordmonitor.com\/home\/11877488-95\/nh-house-votes-against-reopening-casino-debate\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">possibly as a Christmas tree of \u00a0unrelated amendments<\/a>.
