{"id":13574,"date":"2014-05-14T13:47:42","date_gmt":"2014-05-14T21:47:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=13574"},"modified":"2014-05-14T13:47:42","modified_gmt":"2014-05-14T21:47:42","slug":"good-news-from-atlantic-city-f-blew-this-is-the-end","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/good-news-from-atlantic-city-f-blew-this-is-the-end\/","title":{"rendered":"Good news from Atlantic City; F-blew: This is the end"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>OK, so the Boardwalk was down 2% last month but, on a same-store basis (i.e., minus\u00a0<strong>Atlantic Club<\/strong>), business was up 3%, given a shove over the top by $11 million in online-casino <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/caesars-atlantic-city.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-13575\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/caesars-atlantic-city-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"caesars-atlantic-city\" width=\"337\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/caesars-atlantic-city-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/caesars-atlantic-city-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/caesars-atlantic-city.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 337px) 100vw, 337px\" \/><\/a>revenue, which is looking like a difference maker, if not the Holy Grail of gambling. <strong>Borgata<\/strong>, up 13%, played lucky at tables and slots alike. The table-hold gods also looked with favor upon <strong>Caesars Atlantic City<\/strong>, up 17% in revenues. Unfortunately for <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong>&#8216;s four-pack of Atlantic City casinos, all the rest were revenue-negative: -12% at <strong>Bally&#8217;s<\/strong>, -10% at <strong>Harrah&#8217;s<\/strong> and -20% at <strong>Showboat<\/strong>. (No prizes for guessing which one <strong>Gary Loveman<\/strong> is likeliest to close.) <strong>Trump Plaza<\/strong> scraped the bottom again, grossing $4.4 million for a 26% decline.<\/p>\n<p>Up-and-comers were <strong>Revel<\/strong> (55%; $12.5 million) and <strong>Golden Nugget<\/strong> (40%, $13 million). Posting smaller &#8212; but still encouraging &#8212; increases were <!--more-->the <strong>Tropicana<\/strong> and <strong>Resorts Atlantic City<\/strong>. Rounding out the picture was <strong>Trump Taj Mahal<\/strong> (-19%, $18 million). Remarked <strong>Deutsche Bank<\/strong> analyst <strong>Carlo Santarelli<\/strong>, &#8220;<em>We note that the 18.3% hold accrued almost entirely to Borgata (22.5% table hold) and Caesars (31.8% table hold). Furthermore, the table hold result was the highest on record for the market since June of 2000 when the market table hold was 18.5%.<\/em>&#8221; (Citywide, table drop and coin-in were down, however.) It&#8217;s still too soon to pop the champagne corks but Atlantic City appears to be turning a corner. With one or two fewer bottom-feeders dragging down the market it might be back in shape to contend with <strong>Philadelphia<\/strong>. Online gaming revenue <a href=\"http:\/\/cdcgamingreports.com\/online-gambling-revenue-shows-first-decline-in-nj\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">fell from $12 million in March to $11 million in April<\/a>, but <em>S&amp;G<\/em> sets relatively little story by sequential comparison unless no other metric is available.<\/p>\n<p><strong>After being slow on the draw<\/strong> on a few acquisition opportunities, <strong>Churchill Downs<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/05\/14\/nyregion\/churchill-downs-owner-joins-bid-for-casino-in-upstate-new-york.html?_r=0\" class=\"broken_link\">has <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/carstanjen_lg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-13576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/carstanjen_lg-182x300.jpg\" alt=\"carstanjen_lg\" width=\"182\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/carstanjen_lg-182x300.jpg 182w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/carstanjen_lg-91x150.jpg 91w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/carstanjen_lg.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 182px) 100vw, 182px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/05\/14\/nyregion\/churchill-downs-owner-joins-bid-for-casino-in-upstate-new-york.html?_r=0\" class=\"broken_link\">finally cleared leather and drawn a bead<\/a> on <strong>East Greenbush<\/strong>, <strong>New York<\/strong>. There it will team with <strong>Saratoga Casino &amp; Raceway<\/strong>. Their candidacy is premised on a $300 million &#8220;world-class resort&#8221; in an area where the minimum investment is $135 million. Churchill Downs President <strong>Bill Carstanjen<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>left<\/em>) could have been reading right off Gov.<strong> Andrew Cuomo<\/strong>&#8216;s talking points where he said he&#8217;d\u00a0\u201c<em>create reliable revenues for the entire capital region, generate thousands of jobs, and be best positioned to keep New York gaming dollars in New York<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #444444;\">&#8220;Their strategy has been to grow by acquiring relatively new casinos or developing new properties. You haven&#8217;t seen them try to enter <strong>Nevada<\/strong> or <strong>New Jersey<\/strong>,&#8221; Imperial Capital analyst <strong>Gregg Klein<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/albany\/news\/2014\/05\/13\/analysts-churchill-downs-strong-partner-in-east.html?page=all\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">said of Churchill Downs<\/a>. &#8220;Instead they&#8217;re going for more remote, protected markets. Certainly Albany fits that perfectly.&#8221; Churchill Downs may not be the 800-lb. gorilla in the battle for New York, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesunion.com\/local\/article\/Churchill-Downs-joins-East-Greenbush-casino-bid-5474210.php\" target=\"_blank\">but it&#8217;s a 500-lb. primate, for sure<\/a>. Meanwhile, <strong>Albany<\/strong>-area rival <strong>E23<\/strong>, brainstormed by <strong>David Flaum<\/strong>, promises it will have an operating partner soon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fontainbleau<\/strong> is about to get a lot shorter as workers dismantle the construction crane that has sat, mostly unused, atop its top for, lo, these many years. This is the clearest sign yet that owner <strong>Carl Icahn<\/strong>&#8216;s tripartite endgame for the property is DY-NO-MITE! A third-party owner is selling the crane to <strong>Arizona<\/strong> developers and, of course, Icahn has long since stripped F-blew of anything he could peddle\u00a0to other area casinos.
