McDevitt&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressofatlanticcity.com\/communities\/atlantic-city_pleasantville_brigantine\/negotiations-with-local-next-big-step-after-vote-to-unionize\/article_bfb2de62-f02b-11e3-beb7-001a4bcf887a.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">still tasting victory from last week&#8217;s vote<\/a> at <strong>Revel Resort<\/strong>, where employees chose the union by approximately 80% of votes cast. Unite-Here&#8217;s message was that unionization would give the workforce a better chance at job security.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Kreeger.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-13756\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Kreeger.jpg\" alt=\"Kreeger\" width=\"148\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Kreeger.jpg 148w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Kreeger-115x150.jpg 115w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 148px) 100vw, 148px\" \/><\/a>Revel President <strong>Scott Kreeger<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>right<\/em>) is busy trying to sell the place (hence the employee anxiety). However, he issued a statement that he hoped to\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cfoster a good relationship and work productively with <strong>Local 54<\/strong> as the collective bargaining process begins.\u201d That&#8217;s a refreshing contrast to some casino managements &#8212; particularly <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong>&#8216;s &#8212; that have done everything possible to obstruct unionization. Still, Kreeger&#8217;s got an awful lot on his plate to have time for contract talks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, some casinos &#8212; perhaps many &#8212; are expected to be looking for union concession during the fall negotiations. A few (read: <strong>Borgata<\/strong>) don&#8217;t have to hang tough but it will interesting to see how united a front the industry presents.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Typo of the day<\/strong>: &#8220;Kirk Kevorkian [<a href=\"http:\/\/cdcgamingreports.com\/commentaries\/change-is-a-necessary-fact-of-life-on-the-las-vegas-strip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">sic<\/a>]&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>I got a &#8216;horse&#8217; right here<\/strong> &#8230; Faced with dwindling purses and racing handle (down 23% alike), <strong>Texas<\/strong> is grappling with the question of whether to institute &#8220;instant racing.&#8221; That&#8217;s where you bet on old races on a slot-machine like device &#8212; complete with bells and whistles to entice punters. Any identifying data on the horses involved has been stripped out, although bettors are privy to oddsmaking information such as they&#8217;d find in <em>The Racing Form<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/slots.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3810\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/slots-300x151.jpg\" alt=\"slots\" width=\"300\" height=\"151\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/slots-300x151.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/slots-150x75.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/slots.jpg 370w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>There are hangups, such as the fact that players aren&#8217;t betting against one another and the odds are static. All of which means the machines don&#8217;t constitute parimutuel wagering, making them highly unlikely to be approved. It&#8217;s a long shot but, if they were, casino gambling would have entered Texas by the back door. Instant racing is available in <strong>Kentucky<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>Arkansas<\/strong>, and proponents have used that as an argument for bringing it to the Lone Star State.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<span style=\"color: #000000;\">The racing folks noticed that nowhere does the state law say that races must be live &#8230;\u00a0The racetrack owners also are anticipating that they can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/horse.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-13755\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/horse.jpg\" alt=\"horse\" width=\"241\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/horse.jpg 241w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/horse-150x130.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 241px) 100vw, 241px\" \/><\/a>make the change without having to ask lawmakers for their blessing,&#8221; reports the <em>Austin American-Statesman<\/em>. The <strong>Texas Racing Commission<\/strong> doesn&#8217;t have the authority to change the state&#8217;s definition of parimutuel, so it&#8217;s up to instant-racing proponents to make the case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Opponents are banking on a 2006 <strong>Wyoming Supreme Court<\/strong> ruling that read, in part,\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c(W)e are not dealing with a new technology here, we are dealing with a slot machine that attempts to mimic traditional pari-mutuel wagering. Although it may be a good try, we are not so easily beguiled.\u201d <strong>Oregon<\/strong> and <strong>Maryland<\/strong> have also rejected the machines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It doesn&#8217;t help that instant-racing machines were designed to resemble slots. One of their primary innovators, <strong>Louis Cella<\/strong> of Arkansas&#8217; <strong>Oaklawn Jockey Club<\/strong> says\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWe <em>wanted<\/em> it to look like a slot machine.\u201d (Emphasis added.)
