He&#8217;s still two months away from opening<strong> SLS Las Vegas<\/strong> and <em>Thrillist<\/em> has gone and jumped the gun. It&#8217;s crowned <strong>The Cromwell<\/strong> &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thrillist.com\/entertainment\/las-vegas\/reasons-the-cromwell-is-vegas-s-coolest-hotel-the-cromwell-las-vegas\" target=\"_blank\">already Vegas coolest hotel<\/a>.&#8221; Not even an unfinished parking garage could dampen their enthusiasm, motivated by things like a <em>Playboy<\/em> Playmate-inspired cocktail, a free-champagne happy hour, celebrity restaurant <strong>Giada<\/strong>, champagne in the rooms (do you sense a theme emerging?) and the <strong>Drai&#8217;s<\/strong> <em>al fresco<\/em> nightclub\/pool deck &#8230; although from the descriptions, I wonder if <em>Thrillist<\/em> actually just read about that last item:\u00a0The place must be a pretty hot ticket. Well done, <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>(Not so well done: <!--more-->The parking garage at <strong>Paris-Las Vegas<\/strong>, strewn with trash when we visited yesterday.)<\/p>\n<p>* Out east, the designers of <strong>MGM Springfield<\/strong> are touting their &#8220;inside out&#8221; casino, whose 19 points of ingress and egress are intended to promote interaction with the surrounding area. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.masslive.com\/politics\/index.ssf\/2014\/06\/as_casino_surge_continues_in_n.html#incart_river\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">But warning voices are (rightly) being raised<\/a> about putting all of <strong>Springfield<\/strong>&#8216;s chips for fiscal turnaround on a casino, no matter how handsome.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Iowa<\/strong> would take a fiscal hit if <strong>Nebraska<\/strong> legalized casinos. That&#8217;s from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Iowa-seal.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-12194\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Iowa-seal.jpg\" alt=\"Iowa seal\" width=\"224\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Iowa-seal.jpg 224w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Iowa-seal-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/a>the No Shit, Sherlock File, somebody having actually commissioned a study to make that earth-shattering discovery. What&#8217;s worth knowing is how bad the high might be. Nebraskans constitute 25% of the western Iowa player base, pouring $327 million into casino coffers last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not a question of \u2018if\u2019 this will happen but really a question of \u2018when\u2019 because these states are highly incentivized to keep those tax dollars in-state, to create new jobs and stimulate capital investment,\u201d warned the <strong>Union Gaming Analytics<\/strong> report. Nebraska has flirted with &#8216;instant racing&#8217; but is perceived as hostile to casinos for the time being.<\/p>\n<p>A particularly odious bill, by state Sen. <strong>Paul Schumacher<\/strong>, would have required Iowa to share gambling revenues\u00a0or else Nebraska would build casinos near the state line.\u00a0\u201cWe sit here and complain about property taxes, and this is something that we can do about it.\u00a0But no, we\u2019re not even going to look at it. It makes no sense to me,\u201d fumes casino supporter state Sen. <strong>Russ Karpisek<\/strong>. But, with the Iowa market inarguably saturated, it&#8217;s unclear what Nebraska would accomplish beyond clawing back that one player in every four.<\/p>\n<p>* Gaming is making for some very strange bedfellows in <strong>New York State<\/strong>, like odd couple of <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong> and <strong>Cordish Gaming<\/strong>. Now there&#8217;s another one. Up in the capitol region, <strong>Rush Street Gaming<\/strong> and <strong>Saratoga Casino &amp; Gaming<\/strong> are vying for licenses in <strong>Schenectady<\/strong> and <strong>East Greenbush<\/strong>, respectively. But they&#8217;re also tag-teaming rival candidates in <strong>Orange County<\/strong>.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;Serious discussions are under way about a partnership,&#8221; said a Saratoga spokesman about the $670 million <strong>Newburgh<\/strong>-sited proposal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/neil-bluhm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-6975\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/neil-bluhm-300x210.jpg\" alt=\"neil-bluhm\" width=\"300\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/neil-bluhm-300x210.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/neil-bluhm-150x105.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/neil-bluhm.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>This creates a paradox, as outlined by the <em>Albany Times Union<\/em>: &#8220;<span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the competition in the Capital Region, where only one casino license is expected to be awarded by the state, [Saratoga boss <strong>James<\/strong>] <strong>Featherstonhaugh<\/strong> must market his suburban project with <strong>Churchill Downs<\/strong> as superior to the Rush Street proposal for the distressed city of Schenectady. He must also portray it as better than the Hard Rock\/[<strong>David<\/strong>] <strong>Flaum<\/strong> project in the economically challenged city of\u00a0<strong>Rensselaer<\/strong>.&#8221; But must also ideal sell the idea of <strong>Neil Bluhm<\/strong>&#8216;s Rush Street as the ideal team player for Orange County.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The most polygamous partnership is in Rensselaer, where a consortium of <strong>Hard Rock International<\/strong>, the <strong>Chickasaw Nation<\/strong>, <strong>Flaum Management<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Capital Region Off-Track\u00a0Betting\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Corp<\/strong>. are carving up the pie into little slices. By the way, what&#8217;s become of the Southern Tier? We&#8217;ve not heard any news from there in ages.
