How about &#8220;must&#8221; or &#8220;should&#8221;? If ever there were an imperative for joint action, this is it. Perhaps even <strong>Wynn Resorts<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>Mohegan Sun<\/strong> could bury the hatchet. (This presumes that the eternally unpredictable\u00a0<strong>Steve Wynn<\/strong> won&#8217;t erupt and storm out of the Bay State altogether.) <strong>MGM Springfield<\/strong> President <strong>Michael Mathis<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>above<\/em>) promises joint action, adding, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #000000;\">there is a real sense that we all need to work together to educate the Commonwealth about all the benefits of the gaming law.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>(Perhaps this explains the <strong>American Gaming Association<\/strong>&#8216;s blunderbuss lobbying effort; see &#8220;<em>Freeman&#8217;s strange plea<\/em>.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Schippers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-10440\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Schippers.jpg\" alt=\"Schippers\" width=\"155\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Schippers.jpg 155w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Schippers-118x150.jpg 118w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 155px) 100vw, 155px\" \/><\/a>The <em>Boston Globe<\/em> describes the major players\u00a0&#8212; including <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong> &#8212; as &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/metro\/2014\/06\/25\/casino-companies-consider-joining-forces-fight-repeal\/lPFMFfSQiaB2BRj14lz7LO\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">highly motivated<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cIt would not surprise me if $10 million is spent on media ads,\u201d forecasts gaming regulation scholar <strong>Paul DeBole<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cIf<br \/>\nwe see money coming in from competing interests from out of state, that certainly is going to change things and may escalate things,\u201d adds Penn spokesman <strong>Eric Schippers <\/strong>(<em>right<\/em>).\u00a0That would be karmic payback for Penn, which hasn&#8217;t hesitated to sandbag\u00a0business competitors with vicious and misleading ad campaigns in the past. But do Mohegan Sun, <strong>Foxwoods Massachusetts<\/strong>, MGM and Wynn deserve to pay for Penn&#8217;s sins?<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Casino developers hope to cobble together a supporting coalition ranging from Big Labor to the horsey set, from small-business owners to aspiring employees. MGM, which seems to be leading the effort, says a grassroots campaign is the first step, saving the heavy artillery for later (closer to the vote). Knowing that it&#8217;s outgunned &#8212; probably $5 to $1 &#8212; and with thin donor ranks, <strong>Repeal the Casino Deal<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/cdcgamingreports.com\/anti-casino-group-seeks-to-broaden-its-appeal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">is putting all its chips on grassroots-level lobbying<\/a>. Says a spokesman, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #000000;\">that will carry much more weight than the messaging the casinos will put on the air waves.\u201d They can always invoke the Almighty, now that the <strong>Episcopal Diocese of Western Massachusetts<\/strong> has chipped in three grand, putting its money where its mitre is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Coakley.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-12547\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Coakley.jpg\" alt=\"Coakley\" width=\"186\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Coakley.jpg 186w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Coakley-103x150.jpg 103w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 186px) 100vw, 186px\" \/><\/a>The only sure winner is\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Secretary of State <strong>William F. Galvin<\/strong>, who can confidently predict a high election turnout. It&#8217;s hard to tell where gubernatorial aspirant and Attorney General <strong>Martha Coakley<\/strong>\u00a0(D) stands on the issue, as she seems to be evading\u00a0a confrontation with opponent <strong>Don Berwick<\/strong>\u00a0(D) on the issue. The latter wants to lock horns on July 7 in Boston. Coakley <a href=\"http:\/\/www.masslive.com\/politics\/index.ssf\/2014\/06\/in_response_to_challenge_for_d.html#incart_river\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">has agreed to the date but not the venue<\/a>. She wants the debate held in <strong>Springfield<\/strong>, where she can be guaranteed a sympathetic audience. She also wants the topic expanded to include <strong>Internet<\/strong> gambling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Among the <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong> pols looking toward November with bated breath is Speaker of the House <strong>Robert DeLeo<\/strong>. Overconfident lawmakers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DeLeo_07212010.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-4251\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DeLeo_07212010-300x261.jpg\" alt=\"DeLeo_07212010\" width=\"300\" height=\"261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DeLeo_07212010-300x261.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DeLeo_07212010-150x130.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DeLeo_07212010.jpg 315w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>had already booked casino tax revenues into the budget.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #363636;\">\u201cWe\u2019ve already started to use it and to depend upon it,\u201d admitted DeLeo, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.masslive.com\/politics\/index.ssf\/2014\/06\/house_speaker_robert_deleo_uns.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">who now finds that he took a $54 million gamble<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cObviously should the voters decide otherwise in November, we would have to make some difficult decisions in terms of cuts &#8230;\u00a0That\u2019s one of the issues I thought about when I woke up this morning, actually.\u201d If that&#8217;s the case, DeLeo &#8212; who isn&#8217;t termed out until 2016 &#8212; will still be around to feel the electorate&#8217;s wrath.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>False report?<\/strong>\u00a0Shares of\u00a0<strong>Bwin.Party Digital Entertainment Plc<\/strong> bounced nicely on news that the company was putting some or all of itself up for sale. Bwin quickly denied the whole thing and blamed the company&#8217;s valuation problems on a proxy fight with shareholder <strong>Jason Ader<\/strong>. Much as what happened when he tried to undermine\u00a0<strong>International Game Technology<\/strong> CEO <strong>Patti Hart<\/strong>, Ader was pacified by putting one of his allies on the board of directors.
