Statewide, revenues rose 8%, reflecting the dilutive effect of an 8% decline in locals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/lion.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4594\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/lion.jpg\" alt=\"lion\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/lion.jpg 275w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/lion-150x99.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><\/a>gaming revenue. A 3% dip in Strip slot play was far more than offset by heavy baccarat action (up 26%). There&#8217;s a day of slot revenue that will be counted as part of June&#8217;s revenue, but the numbers are still in line with the year to date. Casinos played very lucky at the tables, as players losses rose 38% from May 2013, on a 15% increase in play. Non-baccarat win for the casinos was up 9%. Baccarat players really lost their shirts, with casinos raking in an astronomical 89%, year over year. <strong>Laughlin<\/strong> was down 5% and locals jurisdictions had an even tougher time of it, with <strong>Downtown<\/strong> -8%, <strong>North Las Vegas<\/strong> -10% and the <strong>Boulder Strip<\/strong> -11%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>*<\/strong> To get into <strong>Ohio<\/strong>, both <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> and <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong> made a Faustian pact that allowed <!--more-->racinos in, too. (One can look at this as a progressive move by Gov. <strong>John Kasich<\/strong> [R], breaking up a Caesars\/Penn-only oligopoly.) Both companies hedged their bet by buying or building racinos of their own. Now their brick-and-mortar casinos look almost superfluous as racino revenue is on pace to outgross the two Hollywood- and Horseshoe-branded facilities.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Hollywood-Columbus-opening.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-10610\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Hollywood-Columbus-opening-300x143.jpg\" alt=\"Hollywood Columbus opening\" width=\"300\" height=\"143\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Hollywood-Columbus-opening-300x143.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Hollywood-Columbus-opening-150x71.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Hollywood-Columbus-opening.jpg 843w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The cash cow, slot revenue, is highest at <strong>Hard Rock Rocksino<\/strong> (a racino), while the two Horseshoes languish second and third from the bottom. Newcomer <strong>Miami Valley Gaming<\/strong> is already squarely in the middle of the pack.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThe advantage the racinos have is that the majority of them are in the suburbs and a lot of people don\u2019t want to drive into the main cities,\u201d explains <strong>Ohio University<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Alan Silver<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cIf you add tables games into the equation it\u2019ll be a runaway situation, where the racinos are just going to really out-perform the four casinos.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>*<\/strong> Social-service and nonprofit grants in <strong>Elgin<\/strong> are becoming imperiled as revenue from <em>Grand Victoria<\/em> continues to go down, down, down.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;Come <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Grand-Victoria-IL.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2851\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Grand-Victoria-IL-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Grand Victoria IL\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Grand-Victoria-IL-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Grand-Victoria-IL-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Grand-Victoria-IL.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>2015, it may be time to consider whether these types of subsidies can continue, given the new order of revenue streams of the riverboat,&#8221; said Assistant City Manager <strong>Rick Kozal<\/strong>. This is what Illinois can look forward to if it piles additional casinos atop slot routes, further dissipating revenues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The slot-route beast, for one, is well and truly out of its cage &#8212; although some blame casinos for not vigorously imposing its legalization. &#8220;<span style=\"color: #292727;\">Every month, we\u2019re seeing about 850 new slot machines come into existence.\u00a0That\u2019s nearly a new casino every month. There is no doubt the casino industry simply underestimated the impact these machines would have on our industry\u201d complained <strong>Illinois Casino Gaming Association<\/strong> Executive Director<strong> Tom Swoik<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #292727;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Jaffe.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-13938\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Jaffe.jpg\" alt=\"Jaffe\" width=\"288\" height=\"162\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Jaffe.jpg 288w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Jaffe-150x84.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 288px) 100vw, 288px\" \/><\/a>Illinois Gaming Board<\/strong> Chairman <strong>Aaron Jaffe<\/strong> was unsympathetic:\u00a0\u201cI have to say that your organization did not take the lead in stopping anything in video gaming, as a matter of fact your position was \u2018Well, it won\u2019t hurt us.&#8217;\u00a0That was contrary to the belief of a lot of people. Now you come to us and say, \u2018We\u2019re hurting.\u2019 Well, we knew that in advance. And you knew that in advance, but you refused to acknowledge that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #292727;\">Reported the <em>Chicago Tribune<\/em>, &#8220;While proponents said the legislation would limit video machines to bars, restaurants, truck stops and fraternal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/slots.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3810\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/slots-300x151.jpg\" alt=\"slots\" width=\"300\" height=\"151\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/slots-300x151.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/slots-150x75.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/slots.jpg 370w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>organizations, Swoik pointed to instances where a flower shop in <strong>Oak Lawn<\/strong> and a scuba shop near <strong>Rockford<\/strong> have secured licenses to pour liquor, which allowed them to apply for up to five gambling machines.&#8221; That&#8217;s not the only discrepancy in enforcement that&#8217;s vexing Swoik, who wants new rules drawn up requiring casinos and slot routes to abide by the same regulatory framework. (Unlike casinos, slot routes aren&#8217;t barred from marketing to self-excluded gamblers, for instance.) That seems only right and fair but it&#8217;s unclear whether Swoik, having been spanked, will get what his association\u00a0wants.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><strong>*<\/strong> <strong>Mohegan Sun<\/strong> is feeling slapped in the face after <strong>Boston<\/strong> Mayor <strong>Martin Walsh<\/strong> demanded the casino-selection process be frozen until November, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Walsh.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-12288\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Walsh-142x150.jpg\" alt=\"Walsh\" width=\"142\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Walsh-142x150.jpg 142w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Walsh.jpg 219w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 142px) 100vw, 142px\" \/><\/a>after the repeal vote.\u00a0\u201cIf the voters choose to repeal the law in November, all parties involved will risk losing precious time and millions of dollars for nothing,\u201d Walsh reasoned.\u00a0\u201cWe have been fully cooperative with Mayor Walsh\u2019s administration and negotiating in good faith with the City to agree on a surrounding community agreement,&#8221; replied a\u00a0shocked and extremely disappointed\u201d Mohegan Sun. The two parties were five days away from having to go to arbitration on a surrounding-community agreement. One casino supporter &#8212; Republican gubernatorial candidate <strong>Charlie Baker<\/strong> &#8212; was in Walsh&#8217;s corner, at least.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/deval-patrick.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-7357\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/deval-patrick.jpg\" alt=\"deval-patrick\" width=\"207\" height=\"289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/deval-patrick.jpg 207w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/deval-patrick-107x150.jpg 107w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 207px) 100vw, 207px\" \/><\/a>Although he wouldn&#8217;t want a casino in his home town, Massachusetts Gov. <strong>Deval Patrick<\/strong> (D) has come out against repeal of the 2011 <strong>Expanded Gaming Act<\/strong>, which he called\u00a0<span style=\"color: #363636;\">\u201ca thoughtful bill and I think it ought to stand.\u201d Expanding on his theme, he said,\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m going to vote to keep a system, the one we have, which enables individuals in their communities to decide whether it\u2019s right in their communities and doesn\u2019t prevent people in individual communities to say what ought to happen in someone else\u2019s community.\u201d (I think Patrick&#8217;s line of reasoning got a little garbled there. He seems to mean &#8220;prevents&#8221; rather than &#8220;doesn&#8217;t prevent.&#8221;) <strong>MGM Springfield<\/strong> President <strong>Michael Mathis<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.masslive.com\/business-news\/index.ssf\/2014\/06\/reflecting_on_sjcs_decision_on_gaming_la.html#incart_river\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">tried to make light of the repeal campaign<\/a>\u00a0(&#8220;<strong>Theodore Roosevelt<\/strong> once said that anything in life worth having or doing requires pain, effort and difficulty.
