A 2015 statewide ballot question to add new gambling jurisdictions is &#8220;a very real possibility,&#8221; according to state Senate President <strong>Stephen Sweeney<\/strong>. Coming from a stalwart <strong>Atlantic City<\/strong> defender like Sweeney, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressofatlanticcity.com\/news\/breaking\/senate-president-hints-at-possible-referendum-to-move-casino-gambling\/article_cce831bc-0233-11e4-8d06-0019bb2963f4.html\" target=\"_blank\">this is not good news for the Boardwalk<\/a>. The city is still reeling from a tongue-lashing from <strong>Deutsche Bank<\/strong> analyst <strong>Andrew Zarnett<\/strong>, who wrote that\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cit\u2019s time for operators and politicians to stop dreaming about a false Atlantic City recovery.\u201d Zarnett opined that the present 10 casinos need to be winnowed down to seven, maybe even six. Harsh words.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Paradoxically, both Sweeney and <strong>Meadowlands<\/strong> casino enthusiast Asm. <strong>Ralph Caputo<\/strong> (D) tried to package the idea of additional, outstate casinos as <!--more-->A Good Thing for the Boardwalk. \u00a0\u201cAtlantic City is under tremendous strain, and we can\u2019t just abandon them,\u201d said Caputo whilst doing precisely that. However, unlike Atlantic City&#8217;s, Caputo&#8217;s theoretical new casinos would taxed at a near-prohibitive 50% rate.* The money would ostensibly\u00a0be used to \u00a0help Atlantic City.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>(*&#8211;For all their low-tax talk, has their ever been a casino company that balked at a new jurisdiction because the taxes were too high?)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Oroho.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-14016\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Oroho.jpg\" alt=\"Oroho\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Oroho.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Oroho-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>This has inspired much counterintuitive verbiage.\u00a0\u201cBy co-branding new gaming venues with the global brand Atlantic City already has built up, and by leveraging loyalty programs, we can help make Atlantic City a preeminent destination location,\u201d said state Sen. <strong>Steven Oroho<\/strong> (R).<\/p>\n<p>Those tax dollars had best go into diversifying the type of attractions found in Atlantic City. Just having more gambling around the state for its own sake isn&#8217;t going to accomplish much.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s extension time<\/strong> (again) for southeastern <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong>, where interested casino operators and willing host communities are hard to find. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.milforddailynews.com\/article\/20140704\/NEWS\/140639887\/0\/SEARCH\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">Casinos will now have until Sept. 30<\/a> to file applications. <strong>KG Urban<\/strong>, which has a project in <strong>New Bedford<\/strong>, is crying foul, but this is good news for everybody else who&#8217;s flirting with Region C. <strong>Foxwoods Resort Casino<\/strong> has shown some ankle to both <strong>Fall River<\/strong> and <strong>New Bedford<\/strong>, the <strong>Mashpee Wampanoags<\/strong> &#8212; in <strong>Taunton<\/strong> &#8212; are enmeshed in red tape, and both <strong>Clairvest Group<\/strong> and <strong>Claremont Cos<\/strong>. are still looking for a place to land.<\/p>\n<p>Backers of <strong>Repeal the Casino Deal<\/strong> are confident that, if their ballot <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Mashpee-Wamps.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-14017\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Mashpee-Wamps.jpg\" alt=\"Mashpee Wamps\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Mashpee-Wamps.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Mashpee-Wamps-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>initiative passes, it will knock both the Mashpee and <strong>Aquinnah Wampanoags<\/strong> out of the box. The Aquinnah, in particular, they argue, are going back on a 1993 deal not to &#8220;exercise sovereign jurisdiction&#8221; over 400 hotly contested acres on <strong>Martha&#8217;s Vineyard<\/strong>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/2014\/07\/04\/4218156\/impact-of-casino-repeal-on-tribal.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">The tribes are keeping quiet in the face of barbs from RCD.<\/a> The latter believes its petition overrides any\u00a0state-tribal compact the state negotiated with the Mashpee band. To this, Gov. <strong>Deval Patrick<\/strong>&#8216;s office replies that it will\u00a0<span style=\"color: #1a2732;\">&#8220;assess any ramifications of a repeal&#8221; on the compact.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>One loophole might give the tribes hope. Under a repeal, they couldn&#8217;t hope for Class III status. But games in which players compete against one another &#8212; poker, bingo, e-bingo &#8212; might still be permissible. And it&#8217;s not necessarily small potatoes.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #1a2732;\">&#8220;The <strong>Seminole Tribe of Florida<\/strong> built a $2 billion a year gaming empire on Class II gaming,&#8221; \u00a0notes\u00a0the <strong>University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Clyde Barrow<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Region C applicants will have until March 27 to executive host-community agreements and hold referendums on their projects.
