{"id":14137,"date":"2014-07-21T11:08:39","date_gmt":"2014-07-21T19:08:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=14137"},"modified":"2014-07-21T11:08:39","modified_gmt":"2014-07-21T19:08:39","slug":"argosy-saved-for-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/argosy-saved-for-now\/","title":{"rendered":"Argosy saved &#8230; for now"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Not only has the <strong>Iowa Supreme Court<\/strong> not ruled on Judge <strong>Elizabeth Ovrom<\/strong>&#8216;s ruling to close <strong>Argosy Sioux City<\/strong>, it\u00a0hasn&#8217;t decided whether <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/penn-national-gaming.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5083\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/penn-national-gaming.jpg\" alt=\"penn-national-gaming\" width=\"195\" height=\"45\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/penn-national-gaming.jpg 195w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/penn-national-gaming-150x34.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 195px) 100vw, 195px\" \/><\/a>or not to hear the case. However, it still has kept the <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong> riverboat <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ktiv.com\/story\/26056966\/2014\/07\/18\/the-iowa-supreme-court-grants-a-motion-for-an-emergency-stay-of-stay-on-the-argosys-casino-in-sioux-city-iowa\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">on life support<\/a>. It could just be a matter of days &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/siouxcityjournal.com\/news\/local\/crime-and-courts\/iowa-supreme-court-gives-sioux-city-riverboat-casino-brief-reprieve\/article_f4bfd37f-261d-5730-bad5-d30e3fce5970.html\" target=\"_blank\">or one of months<\/a>. All depends on whether the high court chooses to hear Penn&#8217;s appeal of the <strong>Iowa Racing &amp; Gaming Commission<\/strong>&#8216;s closing order. Considering that it has been allowed to keep the Argosy open for a year unlicensed under a clause called &#8220;operation of law,&#8221; Penn&#8217;s\u00a0fate could have been far worse than its current predicament would indicate.<\/p>\n<p>* Kudos to the surveillance staff at <strong>Sands Bethlehem<\/strong>. They spotted and helped <strong>Pennsylvania<\/strong> state police arrest alleged casino cheat <strong>Jubreal Chahine<\/strong>, wanted by <!--more-->the <strong>Nevada Gaming Control Board<\/strong> on multiple felony counts. Unable to post bail, Chahine is in the cooler. The moral of this story is that if you&#8217;re a casino cheater on the run, the worst place to lay low is at another casino.<\/p>\n<p>* Elsewhere in Pennsylvania, license renewal of <strong>Parx Casino<\/strong> by both\u00a0<strong>Bensalem<\/strong>\u00a0and the state gaming board seems assured.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0&#8220;This has absolutely been a grand slam for Bensalem Township,&#8221; said state Rep. <strong>Gene DiGirolamo<\/strong>, and his comments were echoed by the local state senator, Bensalem&#8217;s mayor and its director of public safety. Generally the highest grossing-casino in Pennsylvania, Parx is as deserving of state license renewal as any casino in the commonwealth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong>&#8216; <strong>Mashpee Wampanaogs<\/strong> have been through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.masslive.com\/news\/index.ssf\/2014\/07\/mashpee_wampanoag_chief_has_mi.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">a dramatic history of downfall and recovery<\/a>. Complicating the next step in that drama &#8212; being granted a casino &#8212; Chief <strong>Vernon &#8220;Silent Drum&#8221; Lopez<\/strong> is admitting to mixed emotions about the prospect:\u00a0<span style=\"color: #363636;\">&#8220;If they handle it right, I think it might be good for the tribe.\u00a0Of course, it&#8217;s going to take a long time before they can show a profit on it.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Mashpee-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-11160\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Mashpee-4-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Mashpee 4\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Mashpee-4-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Mashpee-4-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Mashpee-4.jpg 738w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Furthermore, &#8220;[Lopez]\u00a0<span style=\"color: #363636;\">He said he supports Cromwell and the council in its bid for <strong>Project First Light<\/strong>, as the proposed casino is known, and it could help future generations of the tribe. But he does worry it could leave the tribe in debt or be a corrupting influence.&#8221; Although Lopez&#8217;s position is purely ceremonial, the sentiments of this D-Day veteran could further complicate Chairman <strong>Cedric Cromwell<\/strong>&#8216;s push for Project First Light, still firmly ensconced in Taunton while a rival <strong>Foxwoods Resorts Casino<\/strong> project bounces around the southeast part of the state.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Not only has the Iowa Supreme Court not ruled on Judge Elizabeth Ovrom&#8216;s ruling to close Argosy Sioux City, it\u00a0hasn&#8217;t decided whether or not to hear the case.
