{"id":14465,"date":"2014-09-03T10:26:47","date_gmt":"2014-09-03T18:26:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=14465"},"modified":"2014-09-03T10:26:47","modified_gmt":"2014-09-03T18:26:47","slug":"the-fees-that-ate-las-vegas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/the-fees-that-ate-las-vegas\/","title":{"rendered":"The fees that ate Las Vegas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/harrahs-pic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-1748\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/harrahs-pic.jpg\" alt=\"harrahs-pic\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/harrahs-pic.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/harrahs-pic-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0First, the good news.<strong> Harrah&#8217;s Las Vegas<\/strong> casino floor, one of the most claustrophobic and unpleasant in town <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vegaschatter.com\/story\/2014\/7\/30\/132547\/588\/vegas-travel\/At+Harrah%27s%2C+A+Food+Hall+Cometh%2C+Plus+Casino+Changes\" target=\"_blank\">is getting a makeover<\/a>.<br \/>\nAnd, while they&#8217;re at it, <strong>Caesars\u00a0Entertainment<\/strong> is converting the space formerly occupied by <strong>The Cafe at Harrah&#8217;s<\/strong> and <strong>Ming&#8217;s Table<\/strong> into a newer, bigger eatery, <strong>Fulton Street Food Hall<\/strong>, bringing a touch of <strong>New Orleans<\/strong> to the Strip.<\/p>\n<p>The bad news is that Harrah&#8217;s has jacked up its resort fee to $22\/day. That gouge is nominally for <!--more-->gym usage, on-property Internet access and local phone calls (like anybody uses the in-room phone in the days of the cell phone). <strong>Paris-Las Vegas<\/strong> and <strong>Planet Hollywood<\/strong> have tacked on a couple of bucks a day to their resort-fee ripoffs.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/ti-pic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-14470\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/ti-pic.jpg\" alt=\"ti-pic\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/ti-pic.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/ti-pic-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Treasure Island<\/strong> is also taking a harder line now with its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.treasureisland.com\/special-offers\" target=\"_blank\">$25\/day resort fee<\/a>, although there is a Byzantine set of exceptions, including the &#8220;TV Ad Special&#8221; and for qualifying members of the players club. At least <strong>Phil Ruffin<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vegaschatter.com\/story\/2014\/8\/5\/125646\/4860\/vegas-travel\/From+The+Resort+Fee+Department%3A+Increases+And+The+Di\" target=\"_blank\">gives you something tangible<\/a> in return for your resort fee: &#8220;in-room <strong>Internet<\/strong> access, a 2-for-1 cocktail as well as buffet, a newspaper, local and toll-free calls, boarding pass printing, copy and fax services (up to ten pages) and a $20 credit for a future stay.&#8221; Still, it&#8217;s clumsy sleight of hand to create the illusion that hotel rooms are cheaper than they really are, a trick that oughtn&#8217;t fool a baby.<\/p>\n<p>* Here in the U.S., we take casino admission pretty much for granted. Across the <strong>Pacific Ocean<\/strong>, Filipino lawmaker <strong>Peter Unabia<\/strong> wants to charge players the equivalent of $80.15 just to set foot in a casino. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Singapore_MB_Sands_5_.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4109\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Singapore_MB_Sands_5_-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Singapore_MB_Sands_5_\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Singapore_MB_Sands_5_-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Singapore_MB_Sands_5_-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Singapore_MB_Sands_5_.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>object, obviously, is to discourage gambling by residents and target the tourist market instead. He points to comparable policies in <strong>Singapore<\/strong>, where you&#8217;re <em>persona non grata<\/em> if you&#8217;re unemployed, on welfare or in bankruptcy. <strong>Monaco<\/strong> bars its residents completely from casino play and <strong>India<\/strong>&#8216;s casinos charge a token $3.30.<\/p>\n<p>Unabia also cites\u00a0<span style=\"color: #555555;\">Section 14 (3) (b) of <strong>Presidential Decree 1869<\/strong>, which mandates a prior-year income of $11,45 if you&#8217;re to be allowed to play. You could also only bring two guests if Unabia&#8217;s bill becomes law. At this point there&#8217;s no word on the bill&#8217;s prospects for becoming law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>* Caesars is doing bang-up business at <strong>Horseshoe Baltimore<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Harrahs-Baltimore.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-8341\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Harrahs-Baltimore-300x132.jpg\" alt=\"Harrahs Baltimore\" width=\"300\" height=\"132\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Harrahs-Baltimore-300x132.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Harrahs-Baltimore-150x66.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Harrahs-Baltimore.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>averaging 15,000 patrons a day over the Labor Day weekend. Surprisingly, General Manager <strong>Chad Barnhill<\/strong> downplayed it, saying it was much like the <strong>Cincinnati<\/strong> and <strong>Cleveland<\/strong> openings:\u00a0<span style=\"color: #444444;\">\u201cIt\u2019s in line with what we forecasted.\u00a0We were very excited with the volumes of people who came through to see the facility.\u201d There&#8217;s already been some attrition in the workforce, so perhaps Barnhill can whistle in some ex-<strong>Showboat<\/strong> employees to fill the gaps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>* <strong>BoingBoing.com<\/strong> has discovered the &#8220;Trailer Station&#8221; phenomenon. Unfortunately, <a href=\"http:\/\/boingboing.net\/2014\/09\/03\/the-mystery-vegas-casino-you-c.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">its coverage is riddled with errors<\/a>, so I only mention for the benefit of those hopelessly besotted by the phantom-casino phenomenon.<\/p>\n<p>* One of the best, Vegas-based photographers with whom I&#8217;ve worked is <strong>Jeferson Applegate<\/strong>, who&#8217;s done great work from the <em>Las Vegas Business Press<\/em> to <em>All In<\/em>. Anyone looking for a lensman <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jefersonapplegate.com\/JefersonApplegate\/JefersonApplegate.com.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">could do far worse<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0First, the good news.
