Money doesn&#8217;t mean much to <strong>California<\/strong> developer <strong>Richard Meruelo<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2014-09-15\/revel-draws-new-interest-after-straub-s-90-million-offer.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">who forfeited a $5 million deposit<\/a> on the defunct resort in favor of bidding on it at a bankruptcy auction.\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-style-span\">\u201cWe were of the belief that the shutdown of Revel could increase bidder interest, and that is exactly what happened,\u201d Revel attorney <strong>John K. Cunningham<\/strong> told aforementioned court. Straub <em>consigliere<\/em> <strong>Stuart J. Moskovitz<\/strong> countered that his boss could have Revel back on its feet &#8220;within a few weeks,&#8221; although casino operations would be farmed out to a management company. Meruelo scrapped with Bankruptcy Judge <strong>Gloria Burns<\/strong> over Straub&#8217;s $3 million breakup fee, demanding a &#8220;level playing field.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Cunningham shrugged off Meruelo, saying, &#8220;We don&#8217;t have another buyer standing in the wings.&#8221; Straub&#8217;s all-cash offer would have to <!--more-->be exceeded by $4 million, at which point the bidders would have to top each other by at least $1 million per counter-offer.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">\u201cWe\u2019ve been here for nearly three months and no one else has stepped up. [The fee]\u00a0sets the stage to have more bidding,\u201d Burns replied. She also fended off objections from creditors, who want the auction pushed back a week, to give rival bidders more time to emerge from the underbrush &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/in.reuters.com\/article\/2014\/09\/15\/revelcasino-sale-idINL1N0RG1TZ20140915\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">and for Rosh Hashanah to pass<\/a>.\u00a0&#8220;I hope it&#8217;s not indicative of what might happen when we get into the auction,&#8221; said a creditors&#8217; attorney of the acrimony.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>* In a penny-wise, pound-foolish move, <strong>Ohio<\/strong> gaming regulators <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/content\/stories\/business\/2014\/09\/15\/casinos-bet-on-preshuffled-cards-to-save-time.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">have approved the use of pre-shuffled decks<\/a> on Buckeye State casino felts. This will save all of 25 cents per deck, although the casinos&#8217; main concern in asking for the indulgence was to save <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Cards-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-7323\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Cards-2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Cards 2\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Cards-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Cards-2-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Cards-2.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>man hours. They contend it takes 30 minutes to open a blackjack deck as all the cards are inspected. (<strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong> goes through 36,000 card packs a month at its <strong>Toledo<\/strong> and <strong>Columbus<\/strong> casinos alone.) However, trusting card companies to send pre-shuffled packs is a risky practice &#8212; especially if players get wise to it. Ohioans should ask <strong>Tilman Fertitta<\/strong> about that.<\/p>\n<p>In its own defense, <strong>United States Playing Card<\/strong> &#8212; parent of the <strong>Bicycle<\/strong>, <strong>Bee<\/strong> and <strong>Hoyle<\/strong> brands &#8212; says,\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-style-span\">\u201cWe load sheets of\u00a0printed decks at the front of the production line. They are cut and then shuffled automatically by our approved\u00a0equipment,\u00a0and then\u00a0we load finished and secured,\u00a0pre-shuffled cartons of cards into a shipping carton.\u201d A visit to the USPC assembly line made a believer out of regulator <strong>Matthew Schuler<\/strong>, who &#8220;<\/span>realized the process they employed would actually improve the integrity of the game, and that\u2019s what convinced us.\u00a0The issue of time is an issue for the casinos, not for us. What we\u2019re concerned about is the integrity of the game.\u201d If you say so &#8230; but it&#8217;s still a calculated risk.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/sugarhouse-casino.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-12281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/sugarhouse-casino.jpg\" alt=\"sugarhouse-casino\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/sugarhouse-casino.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/sugarhouse-casino-150x112.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>* Debotors&#8217; prison is out of fashion &#8212; but <strong>Neil Bluhm<\/strong> might be wishing it weren&#8217;t. His <strong>SugarHouse<\/strong> casino in Philadelphia is taking 63 players to court, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.philly.com\/philly\/business\/homepage\/20140916_SugarHouse_Casino_takes_losers_to_court.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in hopes of recovering an aggregate $520,000 in dishonored markers<\/a>. The vast majority of the cases are headed for small-claims court but a few, including one of $90,000, will make their way to the Court of Common Pleas. The time stamps on the marks provide the narrative: &#8220;<span class=\"Apple-style-span\">For example, on Oct. 10, 2012, a gambler borrowed $500 at 4:45 a.m., $2,000 at 5:55 a.m., and $1,000 at 7:47 a.m., to land very quickly $3,500 in debt in about three hours.&#8221; That&#8217;s quite a desperation streak.
