{"id":14578,"date":"2014-09-17T09:36:29","date_gmt":"2014-09-17T17:36:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=14578"},"modified":"2014-09-17T09:51:13","modified_gmt":"2014-09-17T17:51:13","slug":"boston-wynn-wins-changing-horses-at-boyd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/boston-wynn-wins-changing-horses-at-boyd\/","title":{"rendered":"Boston: Wynn wins!; Changing horses at Boyd"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Although the <strong>Massachusetts Gaming Commission<\/strong> put <strong>Wynn Resorts<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/09\/17\/us\/wynn-is-given-casino-license-in-boston-area.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">through the wringer<\/a> this past week, when the chips were down <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2014\/09\/16\/us-usa-gambling-massachusetts-idUSKBN0HB29120140916\" target=\"_blank\">Wynn emerged the <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-8824\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/steve-wynn-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"steve-wynn\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/steve-wynn-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/steve-wynn-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/steve-wynn.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>winner<\/a> by a 3-1 vote. The positive verdict comes with some conditions, so a second vote will be held Wednesday, to ratify yesterday&#8217;s verdict. Though the process has been contentious, <strong>Steve Wynn<\/strong> was in a conciliatory mood, saying,\u00a0\u201cWe expect that now that a decision has been made, everybody will find it much easier to relate to one another, get on with the job of creating jobs and building a better life for the citizens of <strong>Everett<\/strong> and the surrounding communities in the Greater <strong>Boston<\/strong> area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Or, as Everett Mayor <strong>Carlo DeMaria<\/strong> said, &#8220;We\u2019ll no longer be the butt-end of Boston.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The process however is not over as the vote to repeal gaming remains on the ballot for November,&#8221; cautioned <!--more--><strong>Deutsche<\/strong> <strong>Bank<\/strong> analyst <strong>Carlo Santarelli<\/strong>. &#8220;We see the likelihood of a repeal as low. &#8220;Assuming the repeal initiative is voted down in November, we anticipate [Wynn]\u00a0will begin work on the project in early 2015, with a projected opening in mid-2017.&#8221; The project cost is pegged in the neighborhood of $1.5 billion. Higher job-creation numbers (3,300 to 2,500 to <strong>Mohegan Sun<\/strong>&#8216;s 2,500) also told in Wynn&#8217;s favor with the MGC.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/wynn005.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-12603\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/wynn005-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"(010914 Everett, Ma) Renderings for the proposed Wynn Casino in Everett.\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/wynn005-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/wynn005-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/wynn005.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>&#8220;While we anticipate, given surrounding population density and demographics, a healthy cash on cash return, we think the stock debate centers largely around uses of capital,&#8221; Santarelli added. &#8220;We think some will make the case that a capital return via a buyback, with [<strong>Wynn Palace<\/strong>]\u00a0on the horizon and undervalued, could have ultimately proven to be a more sound return on invested capital.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As should expected, <strong>Suffolk Downs<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/business\/casinos-gaming\/wynn-resorts-wins-boston-gambling-license\" target=\"_blank\">is already threatening to close<\/a>. Its approach has always been to hold the ponies hostage to getting a casino &#8212; which proved to be an unpersuasive tactic in the end. Track representative claim Suffolk Downs <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/articles\/wynn-resorts-wins-bidding-on-1-6-billion-casino-outside-boston-1410893189\" target=\"_blank\">can&#8217;t survive without slots<\/a>, but casino selection in <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong> hasn&#8217;t been a welfare program for failing businesses.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Walsh.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-12288\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Walsh.jpg\" alt=\"Walsh\" width=\"219\" height=\"230\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Walsh.jpg 219w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Walsh-142x150.jpg 142w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 219px) 100vw, 219px\" \/><\/a>Wynn won by making some strategic concessions, including indicating a willingness to rethink the design of its hotel tower &#8212; which is pretty unimaginative\u00a0by Wynn standards. It also increased its mitigation fees to Boston to $75 million, although there&#8217;s no guarantee that splenetic Beantown Mayor <strong>Martin &#8220;McCheese&#8221; Walsh<\/strong> won&#8217;t file a lawsuit to halt the project. If so, he&#8217;ll be standing in the way of jobs that will pay more than those at Mohegan Sun would have.<\/p>\n<p>Though the pro-Wynn vote was a no-brainer and should have been unanimous &#8212; commissioner <strong>Enrique Zuniga<\/strong> said Wynn&#8217;s proposal was &#8220;the one I believe can fare better in a competitive market&#8221; &#8212; commissioner <strong>James McHugh<\/strong> stuck by\u00a0Mohegan Sun right to the end, arguing that traffic-mitigation and environmental-cleanup issues would delay Wynn&#8217;s timeline for opening. That&#8217;s considerably less than a positive case for Mohegan Sun, though.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Boyd Gaming<\/strong> and COO <strong>Paul Chakmak<\/strong> are parting ways, amicably, effective this Friday. CEO <strong>Keith Smith<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vegasinc.com\/business\/gaming\/2014\/sep\/16\/chief-operating-officer-leaving-boyd-gaming-wont-b\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">will wear two hats<\/a>, donning that of COO, thereby consolidating two positions into one.\u00a0\u201cGiven today\u2019s operating environment, we believe that more direct oversight and a streamlined decision-making process will position us to improve our operating performance going forward and allow us to execute our growth strategy more quickly and effectively,\u201d was his rationale for the change. Boyd has been tinkering with its executive structure all year, including creating the position of chief marketing officer, a post you&#8217;d think the company is awfully late in creating, compared to\u00a0the rest of the industry.<\/p>\n<p>Smith paid tribute to the departing Chakmak, saying, \u201cPaul helped strengthen our financial organization as CFO, and as COO he helped guide our operations through a period of significant expansion.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Although the Massachusetts Gaming Commission put Wynn Resorts through the wringer this past week, when the chips were down Wynn emerged the winner by a 3-1 vote.
