Having crushed his opposition in the Boston<\/strong> area, Steve Wynn<\/strong> can afford to be magnanimous — as he was in a flying visit to Beantown to mend fences and bask in \"Steve-Wynn-201198-1-402\"<\/a>the glow of victory … and to give a wide-ranging interview<\/a>\u00a0to the Boston Globe<\/em>‘s Mark Arsenault<\/strong>. Now that he’s won the casino license, Wynn is humoring the Massachusetts Gaming Commission<\/strong>‘s desire to see alternate designs<\/a> for the Everett<\/strong> hotel tower. While I wouldn’t go as far as the commissioner who called the design “atrocious,” it’s pretty uninspired by Wynn standards (less attractive than the Mohegan Sun<\/strong> design, in truth), not harmonizing with the retail esplanade … which in itself looks like a leftover from\u00a0one of Wynn’s multiple Philadelphia<\/strong> projects.<\/p>\n

Even Wynn agrees about the hotel now.\u00a0\u201cThe judge was right,\u201d he said of Commissioner James McHugh<\/strong>, who faulted the design for a lack of imagination. In the process Wynn also extended an olive branch to his only opponent on the MGC.\u00a0\u201cI want to hear what the judge says about the color\u00a0…\u00a0I\u2019m giving everyone [on the commission] a chance to give their opinions, since we are partners.\u201d<\/p>\n

Channeling Stewie Griffin<\/strong>, Wynn said the new hotel would be “a sexy high rise … \"Wynn<\/a>a slinky version of Las Vegas<\/strong>.” Thanks to the casino, it will be\u00a0\u201cThe first real grand hotel built in decades.\u00a0The high cost of construction and the price people are willing to pay for a room with hotels.com<\/strong> and Expedia<\/strong> just don\u2019t match up anymore,” but gambling will be the secret weapon that makes Wynn’s largesse possible.<\/p>\n

\"Wynn<\/a>Wynn had luck going his way, too. The Globe<\/em> reports that both Hainan Airlines<\/strong> and Cathay Pacific Airways<\/strong> are incepting nonstop Hong Kong<\/strong>– and Peking<\/strong>-to-Boston flights. No more ferrying high rollers to the casino by corporate jet. Exulted Wynn,\u00a0\u201cNow we\u2019re talking about nonstops to Logan Airport<\/strong>, 12 minutes from my hotel …\u00a0It\u2019s as if to say God<\/strong> is on our side,\u201d he added with a laugh.<\/p>\n

As for defeated Mohegan Sun<\/strong>, he predicted a dark future: “We’re going to take their best customers.\u00a0It was a tough day for them; they needed this deal very badly.\u201d However, Wynn was prepared to invest more, pay higher salaries and pay more to his construction crews and, compared to Mohegan Sun’s pinchpenny approach, that carried the day.<\/p>\n

\"Walsh\"<\/a>Although Boston Mayor Martin “McCheese” Walsh<\/strong> has done nothing but spit bullets at Wynn, the latter professed a willingness to turn the other cheek:\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m going to go make friends with the mayor.\u00a0I\u2019ve got to be his guy. We\u2019re spending a billion-six here \u2014 if it\u2019s a nickel, it\u2019s a billion-six. I\u2019m his best incoming businessman, this company, and I can\u2019t function without him.\u00a0It has got to be a relationship that\u2019s constructive and positive. And why not?\u201d<\/p>\n

For the time being, Wynn Resorts<\/strong> is remaining neutral in the Massachusetts<\/strong> casino-repeal referendum, although Wynn admitted to some doubts on the issue. \u00a0(He could also be the scapegoat if the referendum passes and Wynn sat on the fence.) However, he supports the referendum per se<\/em>. “The idea that the citizens of Massachusetts are actually going to speak on the subject makes life simpler.\u201d<\/p>\n
