Chief creditor <strong>Carl Icahn<\/strong> has pledged to invest $100 million in <strong>Trump Taj Mahal<\/strong> if <strong>New Jersey<\/strong> commits hundreds of millions more to a taxpayer bailout of TER and its dubiously competent\u00a0management team. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressofatlanticcity.com\/news\/breaking\/sweeney-tweets-that-he-will-block-trump-entertainment-s-state\/article_b7838c16-59f1-11e4-9b2e-8f4ba7ce5cee.html#.VEf6n_uLYNo.twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In a series of tweets<\/a>, Sweeney laid out his opposition to the rescue plan &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>I won&#8217;t allow Icahn to use any state grants, tax breaks, subsidies to help underwrite attempt to take away rights and benefits of workers &#8230; If the court&#8217;s ruling stands, then middle-class America has lost. We should be building economy from the bottom up by supporting workers &#8230; It&#8217;s unfair and un-American to allow billionaires like Icahn to exploit the financial difficulties of the casino industry to prey on workers.<\/em><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Above and beyond the question of Taj management sticking it to their labor force there&#8217;s the specter of what happens should the state set a precedent of subsidizing failing casinos. (<strong>Revel<\/strong> never got to the point of drawing down any of its tax credits, so that&#8217;s a moot point.) If the Taj qualifies for PILOT program funds or other subventions, a whole long queue starts forming, with every money-losing casino on the Boardwalk asking, &#8220;Why not us?&#8221; There being no good answer to that question, lawmakers would undoubtedly prefer to dodge it.<\/p>\n<p>* One and a half billion dollars. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2014\/10\/22\/us-philippines-casino-caesars-idUSKCN0IB0Y120141022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">That&#8217;s the price of admission<\/a> for <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> to enter the <strong>Philippines<\/strong>, a market which the American casino industry has heretofore tended to skirt. (No doubt in part because Filipino <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Philippines.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-14829\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Philippines-300x150.jpg\" alt=\"Philippines\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Philippines-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Philippines-150x75.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Philippines.jpg 318w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>majority ownership is required of every casino project.) Losing money hand over fist, the company has to strike gold soon and Philippine investment by <strong>Melco Crown Entertainment<\/strong> and <strong>Genting Hong Kong<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2014-10-22\/caesars-seeking-to-build-1-billion-casino-in-philippines-1-.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">have given the sometimes tawdry Filipino casino industry a new sheen<\/a>. &#8220;There are those who are saying Caesars is a brand name that tells the world that essentially we have arrived,&#8221; said\u00a0President <strong>Benigno Aquino<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pagcor<\/strong> Chairman\u00a0<strong>Cristino Naguiat<\/strong>, the government&#8217;s point man on gaming, indicated that Caesars wasn&#8217;t the only American company to show interest, but he<br \/>\ndeclined to name the others. And though the government had provided the 247 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Naguiat.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-14830\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Naguiat.jpg\" alt=\"Naguiat\" width=\"188\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Naguiat.jpg 188w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Naguiat-150x143.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 188px) 100vw, 188px\" \/><\/a>acres on which multi-casino <strong>Entertainment City<\/strong> was built, he said that newcomers would have to find their own land. (A fifth developer might still be allowed into Entertainment City, however.) A local partner is another prerequisite that Caesars presently lacks.<\/p>\n<p>Caesars was coy, with an executive saying,\u00a0&#8220;It&#8217;s still early in the discussions, but it would be a great complement to our upcoming integrated resort in <strong>Korea<\/strong>, the start of a network of Caesars-branded [integrated resorts] in <strong>Asia<\/strong>,&#8221; including <strong>Vietnam<\/strong>. &#8220;Caesars is seeking to build a resort with shops, restaurants and an entertainment district that could showcase international performers such as <strong>Celine Dion<\/strong> and <strong>Elton John<\/strong>,&#8221; reported <strong>Bloomberg News<\/strong>. Caesars hopes that, thanks to tourism from South Korea and <strong>China<\/strong>, this will be a bank shot whereby it gets some <strong>Macao<\/strong>-style action.<\/p>\n<p>In other Philippine news, <strong>Kazuo Okada<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Universal Entertainment<\/strong> indicated it would open its casino in 2016, a year behind schedule. This did not sit well with Naguiat, who said Okada would finish by March or forfeit a $2.23 million bond.<\/p>\n<p>* Good news from <strong>New Orleans<\/strong> &#8230; gaming revenues last month were even with 2013. <strong>Harrah&#8217;s New Orleans<\/strong> led the market with $24 million, followed by <strong>Boomtown<\/strong> ($9 million), <strong>Treasure Chest<\/strong> ($7 million) and <strong>Fair Grounds<\/strong> racino ($3 million). The impressive part is that this feat was accomplished <a href=\"http:\/\/neworleanscitybusiness.com\/blog\/2014\/10\/21\/new-orleans-casino-take-sees-minor-dip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">with 25,000 fewer patrons than last year<\/a>.
