So don&#8217;t oversleep, &#8216;kay?<\/p>\n<p>As everyone knows by now, the big rumble is in <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong>, where an attempt to repeal the state&#8217;s casino law is failing by a substantial margin in the polls, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Coakley.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-12547\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Coakley.jpg\" alt=\"Coakley\" width=\"186\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Coakley.jpg 186w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Coakley-103x150.jpg 103w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 186px) 100vw, 186px\" \/><\/a>overwhelmingly outspent by <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong>, <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong> and latecomer <strong>Wynn Resorts<\/strong>. However, several &#8216;sure thing&#8217; casino projects got voted down over the past two years, so nothing should be taken for granted. Casino repeal has the support of the <em>Boston Globe<\/em> and of Sen. <strong>Elizabeth Warren<\/strong> (D), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/columns-blogs\/inside-gaming\/vote-reverse-bay-state-casinos-appears-losing-or-will-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">but not of gubernatorial aspirants<\/a> frontrunner <strong>Charlie Baker<\/strong> (R) and Attorney General <strong>Martha Coakley<\/strong> (D, left). Pro-casino forces are keeping their fingers crossed because a &#8220;yes&#8221; vote means nixing casinos and a &#8220;no&#8221; vote is for keeping them. <em>S&amp;G<\/em> urges a &#8220;no&#8221; vote tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>* In <strong>Colorado<\/strong>, it&#8217;s casino vs. racino in a battle that would put one racino each in <strong>Pueblo<\/strong>, <strong>Arapahoe<\/strong> and <strong>Mesa<\/strong> counties. This isn&#8217;t the quick fix it looks like: <!--more-->Only Arapahoe County would be able to have casino gambling in 2015 while the others <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leg.state.co.us\/LCS\/Initiative%20Referendum\/1314initrefr.nsf\/b74b3fc5d676cdc987257ad8005bce6a\/5ce538b40a779b1487257cd0004e3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">would have to wait until 2019<\/a> (because they have no operational tracks, unlike Arapahoe). Gaming interests in <strong>Cripple Creek<\/strong>, <strong>Central City<\/strong> and <strong>Black Hawk<\/strong> are opposed. &#8220;When mountain communities lose customers to the new\u00a0casino in Arapahoe County, these mountain communities lose economic activity and\u00a0pay less in gambling taxes,&#8221; they write.<\/p>\n<p>The aspirations of, say,\u00a0<strong>Southern Colorado Gaming &amp;\u00a0Events Center<\/strong> are a bit rose-colored, though, and recent economic data doesn&#8217;t suggest there is\u00a0enough gambling money\u00a0in the Colorado economy to make everyone happy. The would-be racinos are <a href=\"http:\/\/ggbnews.com\/issue\/vol-12-no-42-november-3-2014\/article\/election-connection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">pulling dollars from TV buys and switching to a door-to-door campaign<\/a> in what is seen as a last-ditch approach. Although the new tax dollars from the proposition are earmarked for education, no school districts are supporting racinos. <em>S&amp;G<\/em> is skeptical but neutral.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>* In <strong>California<\/strong>, well-publicized <strong>Proposition 48<\/strong> would claw back the off-reservation casino granted to the <strong>North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians<\/strong>, a land grant that has cleared the <strong>Bureau of Indian Affairs<\/strong>, the Legislature and Gov. <strong>Jerry Brown<\/strong>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/california_state_flag.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5733\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/california_state_flag-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"california_state_flag\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/california_state_flag-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/california_state_flag-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/california_state_flag.jpg 384w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>desk, so it&#8217;s difficult to say it hasn&#8217;t been properly vetted. (Just for the record: <strong>Station Casinos<\/strong> would build the facility and take a 30%) cut of the profits. Sen. <strong>Diane Feinstein<\/strong> (D) can pound the table and shout, &#8220;Enough is enough&#8221; to her heart&#8217;s content but there&#8217;s no convincing evidence here of rampant &#8216;reservation shopping.&#8217;\u00a0\u201cProp 48 is bad for California&#8217;s environment and it doesn&#8217;t provide any additional funding for California&#8217;s school districts or our state&#8217;s general fund,&#8221; exclaims casino opponent <strong>Cheryl Schmit<\/strong>. Perhaps she ought to be concerned with one of her allies, the hopelessly dysfunctional <strong>Chukchansi Gold Mountain Resort &amp; Casino<\/strong>, where intratribal factions are literally at gunpoint with one another.<\/p>\n<p>Passage of Prop 48 could also bring back Bush-era policies that thwarted the would be opening of a\u00a0<strong>Los Coyotes Band of Cahuilla &amp;\u00a0Cupe\u00f1o Indians<\/strong> casino in <strong>Barstow<\/strong>. Currently, the <strong>Bureau of Indian Affairs<\/strong> is publishing an environmental-impact report, a hopeful sign if the land is to be taken into trust. <em>S&amp;G<\/em> urges a &#8220;no&#8221; vote on Prop 48.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>South Dakota<\/strong> appears disinclined to allow roulette, craps and keno in its casinos. Although the proposal is trailing in the polls, <em>S&amp;G<\/em> advocates a &#8220;yes&#8221; vote.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Kansas<\/strong> has casinos &#8212; so why not raffles for charities and other nonprofits? It seems like a common-sense proposition and has the support of Gov. <strong>Sam Brownback<\/strong> (R). <em>S&amp;G<\/em> says vote &#8220;yes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>* <em>S&amp;G<\/em> endorses a similar bill in <strong>Tennessee<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>* In <strong>Rhode Island<\/strong>, a convoluted ballot question (or one question masquerading as two) would ask voters statewide if <strong>Newport Grand<\/strong> can add 70 table games and whether it should require voter permission to relocate. On the plus side, investors are ready to plow $40 million into Newport Grand if tables are permitted. To the minus, the state would get an 18% rake of table revenue and the City of <strong>Newport<\/strong> would get bupkes. Nevertheless, <em>S&amp;G<\/em> advocates a &#8220;yes&#8221; vote.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Taj-Mahal.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6772\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Taj-Mahal.jpg\" alt=\"Taj Mahal\" width=\"175\" height=\"140\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Taj-Mahal.jpg 175w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Taj-Mahal-150x120.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 175px) 100vw, 175px\" \/><\/a>* Management&#8217;s scorched-earth tactics at <strong>Trump Taj Mahal<\/strong> are paying off. It has whipsawed a contingent of 100 workers into <a href=\"http:\/\/cdcgamingreports.com\/taj-mahal-workers-walking-petition-to-ac-mayor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">echoing its demand for further tax relief<\/a> from <strong>Atlantic City<\/strong> Mayor <strong>Don Guardian<\/strong>. But it&#8217;s kind of hard to take that kind of bold stance when you&#8217;re behind on your taxes already.\u00a0\u201cThey owe us $20 million. They came for tax [help]. We gave them what they wanted, and they\u2019re back at the trough again. I told the Trump people I can\u2019t do anymore,\u201d said Guardian. He&#8217;s promised to support the Taj in its pursuit of state relief, but state Sen. <strong>Stephen Sweeney<\/strong>\u00a0is measuring up as a formidable opponent.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tomorrow we get to exercise that precious\u00a0franchise, the vote.
