Once that unhappy quartet is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Resorts-AC1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-6771\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Resorts-AC1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Resorts AC\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Resorts-AC1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Resorts-AC1-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Resorts-AC1.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>removed from the year-over-year comparison, the percentage increase falls to 3% but the dollar growth goes to $152 million in gross operating profit. Of course that&#8217;s <em>before<\/em>\u00a0interest, taxes, depreciation and all that good stuff &#8212; and the <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> properties are carrying particularly heavy interest. <strong>Mohegan Sun<\/strong>, meanwhile, is working wonders at <strong>Resorts Atlantic City<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fresnobee.com\/2014\/11\/24\/4252563_atlantic-city-casino-profits-up.html?rh=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">increasing cash flow 600%<\/a>, to $5 million. <strong>Tilman Fertitta<\/strong>&#8216;s people also did well at the <strong>Golden Nugget<\/strong>, generating 156% EBITDA growth. By contrast, the maladroit <strong>Robert Griffin<\/strong> administration at <strong>Trump Taj Mahal<\/strong> saw operating profit fall 39%. The Caesars trio of casinos also had declines, but none that severe.<\/p>\n<p>Would-be Taj owner <strong>Carl Icahn<\/strong> doesn&#8217;t want Griffin around &#8212; can you blame him? &#8212; if and when he takes over. <a href=\"http:\/\/nypost.com\/2014\/11\/25\/former-bozo-the-clown-sidekick-could-save-atlantic-city-casino\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">So he&#8217;s looking to former magician<\/a> <strong>Herbert L. Becker<\/strong>, <!--more-->who will definitely need some sleight of hand to make an Icahn takeover work. One of Becker&#8217;s goals is to make Atlantic City\u00a0\u201ca great family place. It has just gone the wrong way.\u201d An erstwhile sidekick to <strong>Bozo the Clown<\/strong>, Becker is also better labor\/management relations. That may be a little too late for Taj workers who have seen their pension plans and paid holidays go &#8220;Poof!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>* While we still don&#8217;t know for certain whether or not <strong>Wynn Resorts<\/strong> is under<br \/>\nfederal investigation, the prospect might imperil his <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong> license <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonherald.com\/business\/business_markets\/2014\/11\/credit_raters_watch_wynn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">or at least make it <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Wynn.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-7758\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Wynn.jpg\" alt=\"Wynn\" width=\"245\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Wynn.jpg 245w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Wynn-150x91.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 245px) 100vw, 245px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonherald.com\/business\/business_markets\/2014\/11\/credit_raters_watch_wynn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more difficult to finance the project<\/a>.\u00a0 \u201cWhether or not we would actually take negative action, that is uncertain. I don\u2019t think that we would do that in this case with the information we have at this point,&#8221; said <strong>Fitch Ratings<\/strong> analyst <strong>Michael Paladino<\/strong>. &#8220;If there\u2019s additional information that gives us more concern from a regulatory or a compliance standpoint, we\u2019d consider it at that time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wynn execs have to be rueing the fact that this brouhaha is making headlines just as they were heading to <strong>Wall Street<\/strong> to raise the capital for their <strong>Everett<\/strong> project, $1.25 billion of whose $1.6 billion cost will have to be borrowed. The feds have definitely sent a message: <a href=\"http:\/\/ggbmagazine.com\/issue\/vol-13-no-12-december-2014\/article\/cash-is-king2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">Improve your compliance or else<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>* First-lien creditors have given Caesars a 72-hour deadline to cure an alleged default. To comply would require Caesars to unravel the arrangement whereby sundry assets from <strong>Caesars Interactive<\/strong> to <strong>Harrah&#8217;s New Orleans<\/strong> were spun off into subsidiary <strong>Caesars Growth Properties<\/strong>. Still, the former hotelier <a href=\"http:\/\/ggbmagazine.com\/issue\/vol-13-no-12-december-2014\/article\/q-a-with-michael-leven\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">seems to be in a mellow mood<\/a>. When he came aboard Sands, six years ago, promoted from board member to executive, Leven had little experience with casinos and was viewed with skepticism in some quarters. However, he steadied a company that had been rife with infighting and he turned around a crash-and-burn in the stock price. He&#8217;d didn&#8217;t solve every challenge &#8212; the <strong>St. Regis<\/strong> on the Strip remains unfinished &#8212; but he&#8217;s done things like leverage his hotel-industry expertise into a portfolio of name brands on the <strong>Cotai Strip<\/strong>.
