One&#8217;s first reaction is that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Slot-player.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-12595\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Slot-player-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"Slot player\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Slot-player-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Slot-player-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Slot-player.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>it doesn&#8217;t live up to the advance hype. What was originally a carrot-and-stick plan is now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/metro\/2014\/12\/05\/state-casinos-have-first-its-kind-tools-limit-slot-losses\/CUmDuj68ZZVuvCtGp4FWoM\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\">no carrot and very little stick<\/a>. There will be no free play for gamblers who stay within their pre-set limits and, once those limits have been exceeded, there will no longer be warning messages every 15 minutes. A 24-hour &#8220;cooling off&#8221; period for players attempting to raise their limit was also nixed. Instead, the reminders will come when <strong>John Q. Gambler<\/strong>\u00a0hits 150% of his limit, then 200% and so on.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s important to provide them with the kind of information that will allow them to make an informed decision,\u201d said\u00a0Director of Research &amp;\u00a0Problem Gambling\u00a0<strong>Mark Vander Linden<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The policy will be implemented at <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong>&#8216;s racino <a href=\"http:\/\/www.masslive.com\/politics\/index.ssf\/2014\/12\/massachusetts_to_test_new_tool.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">as a test measure<\/a> before being engraved in stone, which may not happen until <!--more-->2017. It&#8217;s emblematic of <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong>&#8216; deep ambivalence about gambling. After all, the law that enabled casinos also required them to bear responsibility for minimizing negative social impacts. As Commission Chairman <strong>Stephen Crosby<\/strong> said,\u00a0&#8220;The law makes this a high priority, keep problem gambling to the barest possible minimum, and we&#8217;re following the law and trying to do that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In other MGC business, <strong>Wynn Resorts<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/metro\/2014\/12\/04\/state-gaming-investigators-quiz-wynn-about-report-money-laundering-probe\/crhQXRysptBeuHEjbP7nLP\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\">was queried about that pesky rumor<\/a> of an <strong>IRS<\/strong> investigation. Without acknowledging or denying the existence of such a probe, Wynn cooperated.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Colorado<\/strong> voters chose last month that a bird in the hand (casinos) was worth two in the bush (racinos). Judging by numbers released by the <strong>American Gaming Association<\/strong>, they made a good call. According to boffins at <strong>Oxford Economics<\/strong>, total economic impact was $1.5 billion. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/business\/ci_27069471\/study-colorado-gamblers-ante-stirred-1-5b-2013\" target=\"_blank\">Casinos won $749 million from players<\/a>, which more than made up for a relatively slim contribution ($52 million) from amenities. Tax revenues came to $109\u00a0million, which ought to leave state and municipal governments fat and happy. The average casino-worker salary was approximately $47,400.\u00a0&#8220;We were surprised to see how large the industry is,&#8221; admitted the AGA&#8217;s <strong>Chris Moyer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>* Law enforcement officials in <strong>Puerto Rico<\/strong> seized 431 illegal\u00a0gaming devices (I&#8217;m guessing they mean slots), the culmination of a one-and-a-half-year undercover probe.
