Politicians are preparing to try <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Rauner.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-15365\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Rauner.jpg\" alt=\"Rauner\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Rauner.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Rauner-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>and ram another big gaming expansion through the Legislature, counting on the support of new Gov. <strong>Bruce Rauner<\/strong> (R, <em>right<\/em>), who is said to be &#8220;open&#8221; to persuasion. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyherald.com\/article\/20150120\/news\/150129956\/\" target=\"_blank\">In the plan currently being floated<\/a>, <strong>Arlington International Racecourse<\/strong> would get 1,200 slots and casinos would go into\u00a0<strong>Lake County<\/strong>, <strong>Chicago<\/strong>, <strong>Rockford<\/strong>, <strong>Danville<\/strong>, and an undesignated southern suburb of the Windy City. Legislators continue to imagine that more gambling will be the panacea to Illinois&#8217; financial problems, all evidence.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Gambling expansion would just sift people from one place to another and would not increase revenue,&#8221; said\u00a0<!--more--><strong>Illinois Casino Gaming Association<\/strong> Executive Director <strong>Tom Swoik<\/strong>, who&#8217;s probably spitting into the wind. Still, the numbers from the state&#8217;s major casinos are inarguable. <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Grand Victoria<\/strong> suffered a 15% decline, <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Hollywood Casino Aurora<\/strong> was 13% down and <strong>Empress Joliet<\/strong> suffered an 11% slippage. Meanwhile, slot routes continue to grow and to eat into casino revenues. But lawmakers are not going to let mere facts stop them this year.<\/p>\n<p>* Instant racing is here to stay in <strong>Arkansas<\/strong>. At <strong>Oaklawn Park<\/strong> and <strong>Southland Park<\/strong> it netted $235 million, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arktimes.com\/ArkansasBlog\/archives\/2015\/01\/19\/casino-gambling-continues-to-grow-in-arkansas\" target=\"_blank\">of which the state gets to keep $39.5 million<\/a>. By contrast, the ponies only generated $3 million in taxes. Do you think lawmakers will fail to notice the disparity? Despite the popularity of &#8220;electronic games of skill&#8221; (the verbal dodge that gets around Arkansas&#8217; ban on gambling), the machines have not revived interest in dog racing at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southlandpark.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">Southland Park<\/a>. By contrast, the <em>Arkansas Times<\/em> reports that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oaklawnpark.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">Oaklawn Park<\/a> &#8220;has bulked up thoroughbred racing purses with profits to attract better horses and has sustained a better horse racing operation than many tracks around the country.&#8221; Its Web site is also less shy about promoting racing as the main draw.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Never mind that Illinois casino admissions were down 1.4 million last year and the state&#8217;s gambling houses brought in $87 million less than in 2013.
