{"id":1546,"date":"2009-12-09T14:29:42","date_gmt":"2009-12-09T22:29:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=1546"},"modified":"2009-12-09T14:29:42","modified_gmt":"2009-12-09T22:29:42","slug":"walking-in-vegas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/walking-in-vegas\/","title":{"rendered":"Walking in Vegas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<em>Walking on the <strong>Vegas Strip<\/strong>, I was struck by the smell of sewage wafting between two of the fabulously opulent hotels, and I wondered whether this might be taken figuratively as a kind of miasma for a city going the way of <a href=\"http:\/\/holyjoe.net\/poetry\/shelley.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Ozymandias<\/a><\/em>.&#8221; &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.american.com\/archive\/2009\/december-2009\/what-dubai-can-learn-from-vegas\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\"><strong>David Archer<\/strong><\/a> in <em>The American<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1547\" title=\"ti-pic\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/ti-pic.jpg\" alt=\"ti-pic\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/ti-pic.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/ti-pic-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Since I pass it every day on the bus, I know exactly which two-hotel nexus Archer is referencing. It&#8217;s the diagonal between <strong>Treasure Island<\/strong> and <strong>Wynn Las Vegas<\/strong> (or between the pirate place and <strong>The Palazzo<\/strong>, if you prefer). He&#8217;s not exaggerating about the cloacal stench: It&#8217;s a sulfuric fragrance that suggests that either Treasure Island had a side entrance by way of <strong>Hell<\/strong> or that thousands of toilets are simultaneously backed up.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s remarkable is that this problem has festered (and believe me, that&#8217;s the operative verb) for months on end and nothing ever seems to get done about it. It&#8217;s the olfactory equivalent of the Emperor&#8217;s New Clothes and it&#8217;s high time somebody (namely Mr. Archer) said something about it &#8230; unless there&#8217;s another intersection on the Strip that smells totally like ass, too.
