Last week, <em>LVA<\/em> broke the news that &#8212; at least according to one of our sources &#8212; the <strong>Riviera<\/strong> was being sold to the <strong>Las\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Riviera.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-8733\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Riviera-300x231.jpg\" alt=\"Riviera\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Riviera-300x231.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Riviera-150x115.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Riviera.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><strong>Vegas Convention &amp; Visitors&#8217; Authority<\/strong>. And what gambling would replace it? Nothing. The Riv would be demolished and the Convention Center would be extended to the <strong>Las Vegas Strip<\/strong>. The LVCVA would neither confirm nor deny the story when we asked them about, but the <em>Las Vegas Review-Journal<\/em> has rounded up other &#8220;on background&#8221; confirmations, so <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/business\/casinos-gaming\/las-vegas-riviera-hotel-about-be-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Riv&#8217;s fate would appear to be sealed<\/a>. Owner <strong>Starwood Capital Group<\/strong> and manager <strong>Paragon Gaming<\/strong> have also headed for the tall grass.<\/p>\n<p>The LVCVA&#8217;s interest in the Riv would appear to be as the site for a sought-after transportation center. As for Paragon, <!--more-->it may have gone to a lot of work for naught last year, correcting 200 code violations, power-washing to building and putting in new carpeting. Then again, you never know when opportunity will come knocking, particularly in the form of a deep-p0cketed suitor like the LVCVA.<\/p>\n<p>* A takeover bid for <strong>888 Holdings<\/strong> by <strong>William Hill<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/dealbook.nytimes.com\/2015\/02\/16\/british-gambling-website-888-holdings-ends-takeover-talks\/?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fell apart in record time<\/a>. The two sides\u00a0had a\u00a0\u201csignificant difference of opinion on value,\u201d which would certainly put a damper on negotiations. 888 CEO <strong>Brian Mattingley<\/strong> assured investors\u00a0\u201cThe company is in good health, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/poker-card.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-12502\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/poker-card.jpg\" alt=\"poker-card\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/poker-card.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/poker-card-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>and continues to trade comfortably in line with expectations.\u201d An unidentified 888 shareholder <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2015\/02\/16\/888-ma-william-hill-idUSASM00094120150216\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">is pegged as the culprit<\/a> who scuttled the deal, feeling its premium wasn&#8217;t rich enough. 888 founder <strong>Avi Shaked<\/strong>, his relatives, and co-founders, the <strong>Ben-Yitzhak<\/strong> brothers <a href=\"http:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/business\/business-news\/william-hill-and-888-holdings-call-off-takeover-talks-after-shareholder-disagrees-on-price-10048499.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">are among those mooted<\/a> as potential objectors.<\/p>\n<p>Columnist <strong>Russell Lynch<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/business\/markets\/russell-lynch-888-founder-avi-shaked-should-know-when-to-take-money-off-table-10049642.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pegs Shaked as the naysayer<\/a>. Of William Hill&#8217;s offer, he wrote, &#8220;Shareholders in 888 &#8230;\u00a0haven\u2019t seen anything like that price since 2006, just before the U.S. pulled the plug on online poker.&#8221; He also noted that &#8220;<strong>PokerStars<\/strong> \u2014 a global goliath with a marketing budget to match \u2014 is moving into 888\u2019s traditional territory of casino games and looking to eat its lunch.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t the first 888 takeover to go south, a Ladbrokes effort having failed. According to the <em>Evening Standard<\/em>, &#8220;William Hill had targeted 888 hoping to benefit from its strong in-house technology. Cost savings and improved exposure to international markets, particularly the U.S,. were also attractive.&#8221; <strong>Paddy Power<\/strong> might be the next suitor presenting itself for 888&#8217;s approval. May the luck of the Irish be with it.<\/p>\n<p>* The faces &#8212; 150 of them &#8212; have changed in the <strong>New Hampshire<\/strong> Legislature but the issue of casino gambling has returned yet again. Tireless proponent state Sen. <strong>Lou D&#8217;Allesandro<\/strong> (D) is back with a proposed two-casino package. He feels his chances are better this time around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Maggie-Hassan-Headshot-HIGH-RES-Web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-10891\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Maggie-Hassan-Headshot-HIGH-RES-Web-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"Maggie-Hassan-Headshot-HIGH-RES-Web\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Maggie-Hassan-Headshot-HIGH-RES-Web-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Maggie-Hassan-Headshot-HIGH-RES-Web-99x150.jpg 99w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Maggie-Hassan-Headshot-HIGH-RES-Web-681x1024.jpg 681w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a>because Gov. <strong>Maggie Hassan<\/strong> (D) hasn&#8217;t baked any casino revenue into her budgetary pie. <strong>Casino Free NH<\/strong> mouthpiece <strong>Steve Duprey<\/strong> counters that the size of casinos approved for <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong> will leave <strong>New Hampshire<\/strong> with locals casinos, not tourist draws.<\/p>\n<p>Calling it an addictive and erratic revenue source, Duprey said the\u00a0exclusion of gambling taxes from Hassan&#8217;s budget shows that the Granite State can get by without it. In trying to address such concerns, D&#8217;Allesandro has come up with enabling legislation that&#8217;s thousands of words long.<\/p>\n<p>Hassan, passing over casinos, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.concordmonitor.com\/news\/politicalmonitor\/15676618-95\/capital-beat-governors-budget-plan-avoids-casino-gambling-in-favor-of-keno\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">has proposed legalizing keno<\/a> (which no one has ever called the &#8220;crack cocaine of gaming&#8221;), which she says will bring in $26 million over the next biennium. This may be a canny strategy of playing possum on the casino issue, improving its chances by making it a stand-alone question. Or perhaps Hassan has tired of butting heads with the Lege over the casino question, opting for a soft target keno. Or maybe she thinks keno is the &#8220;gateway drug&#8221; that will eventually wear down lawmakers&#8217; resistance to casinos. Hard to say.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Millennium Gaming<\/strong> spokesman <strong>Scott Spradling<\/strong> said\u00a0\u201cNo news was good news. &#8220;Had she put it in the budget, the entire issue might have stalled before it had a chance to get started.\u201d Also, the governor and D&#8217;Allesandro are not quite on the same page.\u00a0\u00a0Hassan \u201ccontinues to believe that moving forward with New Hampshire\u2019s own plan for <em>one<\/em> highly regulated destination casino is the right step for keeping revenue in New Hampshire,\u201d said gubernatorial spokesman <strong>William Hinkle<\/strong> (emphasis added).
