A few tribal contracts aside, all of Station&#8217;s eggs were in the <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/palacestation-pic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6420\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/palacestation-pic.jpg\" alt=\"palacestation-pic\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/palacestation-pic.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/palacestation-pic-150x99.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>basket. To put it another way, Vegas may have gotten the flu but Station contracted tuberculosis. The company went south so fast that its bankruptcy is now a distant memory.<\/p>\n<p>All of which is preamble to the disclosure that Station&#8217;s 4Q14 numbers were the best since the halcyon days of 2008, when company execs were dreaming big and Station was living large. As CFO <strong>Marc Falcone<\/strong> put it,\u00a0\u201cIt may finally appear we have reached that inflection point we have <!--more-->been discussing for several years.\u201d In 2014, Station grew revenue 3% (to $1.3 billion) and cash flow 9%. Vegas business completely drove the comeback, with 4Q14 hotel revenue up 13% (the biggest bump since 2007) and only $47 million coming in from <strong>California<\/strong> and <strong>Michigan<\/strong> tribal operations all year.<\/p>\n<p>Quarterly gaming revenue was up 5%, the best since early 2012, with Station riding a six-month crescendo in slot revenue. Falcone credited higher consumer confidence and local wages &#8212; plus lower fuel costs &#8212; with helping drive Station&#8217;s gains:\u00a0\u201cThe majority of key economic indicators have shown signs of improvement for several years and we expect these improvements to continue in 2015.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and the lines for the oyster bar at <strong>Palace Station<\/strong> are as long as I&#8217;ve ever seen.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong>&#8216;s fourth-quarter numbers drew a rave review from <strong>J.P. Morgan<\/strong> analyst <strong>Joseph Greff<\/strong>. Not even a $20 million miss on estimates for <strong>Macao<\/strong> could dampen his enthusiasm. &#8220;[We]\u00a0importantly project ~10% LV Strip EBITDA growth on very <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/delano-pic.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-15550\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/delano-pic.png\" alt=\"delano-pic\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/delano-pic.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/delano-pic-150x100.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>reasonable 4% net revenue growth and flow-though [<em>sic<\/em>] assumptions in 2015,&#8221; he wrote. He predicted &#8220;a steadily improving balance sheet\/leverage position&#8221; through 2017, as various MGM projects begin to be monetized. &#8220;We continue to view MGM as having a favorable risk-reward given its positive operating momentum in Las Vegas and its less than severe sensitivity (relative to peers) to Macau swings,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>Among the factors encouraging Greff were &#8220;sustainable &#8230; operating trends&#8221; on the Strip, where MGM is rolling out a series of new projects &#8212; the <strong>Delano<\/strong>, <strong>The Park<\/strong>, the <strong>AEG Arena<\/strong> and the expansion of <strong>Mandalay Bay<\/strong>&#8216;s convention center &#8212; in staggered fashion. MGM&#8217;s loyalty-marketing program was described as &#8220;effective.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of marketing, Greff felt MGM had positioned itself well in Macao by targeting the mass-market player. However, VIP play is still so preponderant that mass-market growth of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/jimmurren_t652.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-11973\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/jimmurren_t652-253x300.jpg\" alt=\"jimmurren_t652\" width=\"253\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/jimmurren_t652-253x300.jpg 253w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/jimmurren_t652-126x150.jpg 126w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/jimmurren_t652.jpg 346w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 253px) 100vw, 253px\" \/><\/a>19% couldn&#8217;t begin to offset a 39% plunge in high-roller action. Closer to home, despite widespread saturation, MGM&#8217;s <strong>Mississippi<\/strong> and <strong>Detroit<\/strong> casinos outperformed estimates. &#8220;January has started off strong &#8230;\u00a0with LV Strip baccarat up double digits and overall table games up high-single digits over 1Q14,&#8221; Greff added.<\/p>\n<p>In a very un-Murren-like swipe at the competition, CEO <strong>Jim Murren<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>right<\/em>) kicked the corpse of the <strong>Riviera<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cThe days of [the Riviera\u2019s] benefit to Las Vegas are long gone, and to have the quality construction, quality infrastructure, entertainment-oriented activity that the convention center would produce would be very beneficial to the neighborhood,\u201d he told the <em>Las Vegas Sun<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><script src=\"https:\/\/player.ooyala.com\/iframe.js#pbid=218d3da5eeb24e93a601526d4d3e8750&amp;ec=d4cDFnczqPUutIxcsiLQrjWhwlAhL2IP\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Wisconsin<\/strong> Gov. <strong>Scott Walker<\/strong> (R) has found a part of &#8220;casino&#8221; he likes: <a href=\"http:\/\/fox6now.com\/2015\/02\/17\/putting-the-no-in-casino-governor-walker-says-his-rejection-of-kenosha-casino-proposal-is-final\/\" target=\"_blank\">the last two letters<\/a>. In an ill-timed and tasteless political stunt, he went\u00a0to <strong>Kenosha<\/strong> to celebrate 50 new jobs at <strong>Toolamation Services<\/strong> &#8230; having just killed hundreds (if not thousands) of potential new jobs at nixed <strong>Hard Rock Kenosha<\/strong>.
