It also<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Caesars-AC.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-14094\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Caesars-AC-300x212.jpg\" alt=\"Caesars AC\" width=\"300\" height=\"212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Caesars-AC-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Caesars-AC-150x106.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Caesars-AC.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>demanded $462 million from the company for &#8220;alleged withdrawal liability.&#8221; Although the NRF voted to kick Caesars out back in January, it waited until last week to take court action.\u00a0\u201cWe did not start this. Caesars started this, and had Caesars not done what they were going to do, and did do, we would never have taken those actions,\u201d said NRF Chairman <strong>Jim Brubaker<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>He said the fund was motivated by the fear that Caesars was going to put its best assets, including <!--more--><strong>Harrah&#8217;s Resort<\/strong> in Atlantic City, out of creditors&#8217; reach. According <strong>Unite-Here Local 54<\/strong>, Caesars&#8217; pensions were fully funded\u00a0but the NRF definitely feared that would no longer be the case as the company goes through what is likely to be a protracted bankruptcy.\u00a0\u201cWe no longer have the ability to pursue the other parts of Caesars \u2014 the so-called good Caesars \u2014 for the obligations of the bad Caesars.\u00a0So we had to act before the bankruptcy,\u201d said Brubaker.<\/p>\n<p>The NRF&#8217;s expulsion\u00a0set off the volcano that is Local 54 President <strong>Robert McDevitt<\/strong>, who characterized it as \u201ca dumb move by some trustees on the fund who really weren\u2019t thinking things through.\u201d The union was already suing the NRF for its\u00a0\u201cunnecessary, premature, and irrational,\u201d contending that Caesars was one of the fund&#8217;s biggest depositors. (If you&#8217;re wondering where Caesars is in all of this, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressofatlanticcity.com\/business\/pension-fund-kicks-out-caesars-demands-million\/article_6a83a5ca-c6a9-11e4-a730-e393bea457a2.html\">it&#8217;s putting its pension-fund obligations into escrow<\/a>.) Local 54&#8217;s suit accuses the NRF of\u00a0\u201crecklessly placed the financial health of the entire Fund in peril &#8230;\u00a0rather than simply allowing the Caesars Contributions to continue their current, collectively-bargained level of contributions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>* Although, from the way some people talk about the Caesars bankruptcy, you&#8217;d think the $10 billion writeoff is <strong>Monopoly<\/strong> money, there are real human consequences. A small but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/caesars_palace_expansion.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5899\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/caesars_palace_expansion.jpg\" alt=\"caesars_palace_expansion\" width=\"258\" height=\"157\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/caesars_palace_expansion.jpg 258w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/caesars_palace_expansion-150x91.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 258px) 100vw, 258px\" \/><\/a>no less undeserving group of ex-Caesars employees are finding this out the hard way. As one of them said,\u00a0\u201cAt my age, I\u2019m no longer employable and will have to sell my home and somehow drastically reduce our expenses.\u201d Why? Because Caesars has terminated the\u00a0<strong>Supplemental Employee Retirement Plan<\/strong>, or SERP, of him and four-dozen\u00a0other retirees.<\/p>\n<p>Executive Vice President of Human Resources <strong>Mary Thomas<\/strong> shifted the blame, writing,\u00a0\u201cUnder the bankruptcy code, the SERP payments you were receiving are considered a general unsecured pre-petition obligation of the debtor and cannot be paid without specific authorization from the bankruptcy court\u201d &#8212; an authorization Caesars apparently has not sought.\u00a0\u201cThe senior management team and I are grateful for you past contributions and dedication in service to our guests,\u201d Thomas wrote to the ex-employees she was pushing under the bus, as though gratitude could pay the bills.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s certainly cold comfort to 68-year-old\u00a0<strong>Betty Wilson<\/strong>,\u00a0who suddenly finds herself out $4,000 a month.\u00a0\u201cRetirees count on these pensions.\u00a0The company went to great lengths to say they are taking care of their current employees, but what about us? We lived on that pension and now it\u2019s been totally taken away,\u201d she lamented to the <em>Las Vegas Review-Journal<\/em>. It&#8217;s a criminal shame that Caesars execs like CEO <strong>Gary Loveman<\/strong> continue to live high on the hog but can&#8217;t find 4K a month for faithful employees like Betty Wilson.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Caesars Entertainment got the boot in a big way from the National Retirement Fund, which bounced the company&#8217;s three Atlantic City casinos from membership.
