Two wannabe REITs went in opposite directions. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Auberge-BR-casino-floor.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-10108\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Auberge-BR-casino-floor-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Auberge BR casino floor\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Auberge-BR-casino-floor-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Auberge-BR-casino-floor-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Auberge-BR-casino-floor.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><strong>Pinnacle Entertainment<\/strong>&#8216;s aggregate Pelican State casinos were up 9% while <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> got hammered, down 14%. <strong>Boyd Gaming<\/strong>&#8216;s considerable Louisiana holdings were up 2%. If <strong>Gaming &amp; Leisure Properties<\/strong> succeeds in its hostile takeover attempt of Pinnacle, the <strong>Federal Trade Commission<\/strong> will almost certainly force it to sell one of the two <strong>Baton Rouge<\/strong> riverboats it would control. The choice between <strong>Hollywood Baton Rouge<\/strong> ($7 million) and <strong>L&#8217;Auberge Baton Rouge<\/strong> ($15 million, well over half the market) ought to be easy, as L&#8217;Auberge is running away <!--more-->with the market, up 17% this month alone. <strong>Tropicana Entertainment<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Belle of Baton Rouge<\/strong> ($6 million) brought up the rear.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>Lake Charles<\/strong>, the new premier market for gambling, the Golden Nugget pulled in $14 million but <strong>L&#8217;Auberge du Lac<\/strong> still grossed $27 million, a 5% improvement on last year. (The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Harrahs_NO.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7957\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Harrahs_NO-300x219.jpg\" alt=\"Harrahs_NO\" width=\"300\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Harrahs_NO-300x219.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Harrahs_NO-150x109.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Harrahs_NO.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>beneficial synergies seem to be flowing predominantly in Pinnacle&#8217;s direction.) <strong>Isle Grand Palais<\/strong> and Boyd&#8217;s <strong>Delta Downs<\/strong> suffered tiny losses of business at the hands of the two giants. Although <strong>New Orleans<\/strong> got thoroughly eclipsed by Lake Charles, grossing $51 million to the latter&#8217;s $70 million, almost every operator was up last month: Pinnacle&#8217;s <strong>Boomtown New Orleans<\/strong> rose 13%, Boyd&#8217;s <strong>Treasure Chest<\/strong> swelled by 7% and <strong>Churchill Downs<\/strong>&#8216; <strong>Fair Grounds<\/strong> racino did 3% better. Only the <strong>Harrah&#8217;s New Orleans<\/strong> glass was half-full or half-empty. It grossed more than the three other casinos combined, but also absorbed a 19% dropoff in revenue.<\/p>\n<p>Another troubled Caesars property was low-grossing <strong>Louisiana Downs<\/strong>, down 25%. <strong>Horseshoe Bossier City<\/strong> managed to hold its ground, up 1% on a $17 million gross. <strong>Sam&#8217;s Town Bossier<\/strong> was 1% off last year&#8217;s pace while Pinnacle&#8217;s <strong>Boomtown Bossier City<\/strong> was up 2%. <strong>Eldorado Shreveport<\/strong> continued to be a solid performer, up 5%, while new kid on the block <strong>Margaritaville<\/strong> continues to enjoy the fruits of novelty, rising 13%. Sometimes 13 is a lucky number.<\/p>\n<p>* Straining at its limits, the <strong>Pennsylvania<\/strong> casino industry has banded together and brought the Legislature a wish list worthy of Christmas. It includes things the casinos want (24-hour alcohol service, comped drinks, tax-free free play) and things they don&#8217;t (slot routes, more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Coat_of_arms_of_Pennsylvania.svg_.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-15715\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Coat_of_arms_of_Pennsylvania.svg_-300x178.png\" alt=\"Coat_of_arms_of_Pennsylvania.svg\" width=\"300\" height=\"178\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Coat_of_arms_of_Pennsylvania.svg_-300x178.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Coat_of_arms_of_Pennsylvania.svg_-150x89.png 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Coat_of_arms_of_Pennsylvania.svg_.png 340w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>resort casinos &#8212; if you guessed that resort-casino owners weren&#8217;t part of the coalition, you guessed right). Some of the requests &#8212; such as tax credits for upgrading their facilities and for marketing to out-of-state patrons &#8212; you&#8217;d think they&#8217;d do out of enlightened self-interest. However, it&#8217;s probably easier to get a tax reduction by this side-door method than tackling the state&#8217;s 55% levy on slot revenues head on. While the coalition chafed at some &#8220;strict regulatory requirements,&#8221; they proposed one of their own: make sanctions on underage gambling more stringent.<\/p>\n<p>The most dramatic change requested by the coalition was to basically eliminate Pennsylvania&#8217;s testing process for slots and electronic games &#8230; if a game is legal in <strong>Arizona<\/strong>, say, it should automatically be OK for the Keystone State. As\u00a0Sen. <strong>Robert &#8220;Tommy&#8221; Tomlinson<\/strong> (R)\u00a0put it,\u00a0&#8220;We have a terrible lag. If there&#8217;s a hot machine and it&#8217;s not at <strong>SugarHouse<\/strong> or<strong> Parx<\/strong> or <strong>Harrah&#8217;s<\/strong>, Mom and Pop are going back to <strong>Atlantic City<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The opposition to slot routes isn&#8217;t a purely theoretical exercise: state Rep. <strong>Paul Costa<\/strong> (D, <em>below<\/em>) has just such a bill in the hopper, on the rationale that \u201cpeople who go to taverns and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Costa.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-15762\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Costa.jpg\" alt=\"Costa\" width=\"160\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Costa.jpg 160w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Costa-107x150.jpg 107w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 160px) 100vw, 160px\" \/><\/a>frequent local bars are more inclined to stay in their neighborhood\u201d than go to casinos. Responded the coalition, \u201ca rollout of [VLTs]\u00a0in Pennsylvania will almost certainly result in casino-like games on every Main Street in every town across the commonwealth and threaten thousands of living-wage jobs currently filled at our casino facilities.\u201d Tomlinson adds that slot routes &#8220;decimated casinos in Illinois&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.philly.com\/philly\/blogs\/inq-phillydeals\/Casino-owners-Let-us-drink-all-night.html\" target=\"_blank\">but Costa is dismissive of those numbers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Due to a lack of consensus (read: <strong>Sands Bethlehem<\/strong>), the casino coalition sidestepped <strong>Internet<\/strong> gambling. <a href=\"http:\/\/triblive.com\/news\/adminpage\/7998247-74\/casinos-gaming-revenue#axzz3UrNX50PW\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">Legislators are not so shy<\/a>. They have to bridge a chasm in the state budget that is estimated as being between $1.5 billion to $2.3 billion. The less-palatable alternative is to raise income, property or\u00a0sales taxes. <strong>House Gaming Oversight Committee<\/strong> Chairman <strong>John Payne<\/strong> (R), noted that Internet gambling and fantasy-sports wagering are &#8220;an industry that&#8217;s already here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Kotik.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-15763\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Kotik.jpg\" alt=\"Kotik\" width=\"160\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Kotik.jpg 160w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Kotik-107x150.jpg 107w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 160px) 100vw, 160px\" \/><\/a>He has an ally in Internet-legalization co-sponsor Rep. <strong>Nick Kotik<\/strong> (D, <em>right<\/em>), whose optimism\u00a0is tempered. Observing that meeting Gov. <strong>Tom Wolf<\/strong>&#8216;s budget is comparable to ascending Mount Everest, Kotik says of i-gaming&#8217;s fate,\u00a0\u201cIt all depends whether the Republicans think it&#8217;s a viable alternative. For a lot of Republican members, gambling is taboo.\u00a0That makes it a hard sell.\u201d Payne adds that Atlantic City and Delaware responded to inroads made by Pennsylvania by pushing back with Web wagering.<\/p>\n<p>Making an odd bedfellow with <strong>Sheldon Adelson<\/strong> is <strong>Pennsylvania Family Institute<\/strong> prexy <strong>Michael Geer<\/strong>, who says that in 2004,\u00a0\u201cWe predicted the government would be back for more because it&#8217;s addictive.\u201d State Sen. <strong>Kim Ward<\/strong> (R) says the existing industry has to be brought into the &#8216;Net-betting tent:\u00a0\u201cIf you don&#8217;t, you won&#8217;t get the support of the industry and we will end up in some type of lawsuit.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Subtract the Golden Nugget Lake Charles from last month&#8217;s Louisiana gambling revenues and they&#8217;re absolutely flat with 2014.
