{"id":15840,"date":"2015-04-07T09:35:19","date_gmt":"2015-04-07T17:35:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=15840"},"modified":"2018-12-18T09:07:24","modified_gmt":"2018-12-18T17:07:24","slug":"reid-adelson-lovefest-massachusetts-meddling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/reid-adelson-lovefest-massachusetts-meddling\/","title":{"rendered":"Reid-Adelson lovefest; Massachusetts meddling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Now that he&#8217;s no longer standing for reelection, Sen. <strong>Harry Reid<\/strong> (D) has flung himself fully into the arms of <strong>Sheldon Adelson<\/strong>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vegasinc.com\/business\/gaming\/2015\/apr\/03\/reid-striving-add-ban-online-gaming-his-political-\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\"> calling for a ban on online gambling<\/a> that might even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/harryreid_t178.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5038\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/harryreid_t178.jpg\" alt=\"harryreid_t178\" width=\"178\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/harryreid_t178.jpg 178w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/harryreid_t178-118x150.jpg 118w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 178px) 100vw, 178px\" \/><\/a>extend to <strong>Nevada<\/strong>&#8216;s fledgling I-poker industry (although Reid&#8217;s being wildly ambiguous on that last point). Isn&#8217;t it nice to see that Senate Majority Leader <a href=\"http:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/china-makes-biggest-online-gambling-bust-ever\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">borrowing domestic policy<\/a> from <strong>China<\/strong>?\u00a0Adelson flunky <strong>Andy Abboud<\/strong> added to the nonsense by arguing that online gambling should be outlawed because it is doing poorly financially. So what? If Abboud is right, free-market forces will solve the problem without Congress having to lift a pinkie.<\/p>\n<p>Of the various attempts to outlaw <strong>Internet<\/strong> gaming being pondered in Congress, at least Sen. <strong>Lindsey Graham<\/strong> (R) is amenable to a carve-out for online lotteries, which often use out-of-state servers. But Adelson and water-carrier Rep. <strong>Jason Chaffetz<\/strong> (R) will have no such talk of compromise. Adelson wants to protect his precious casinos and Chaffetz is the most vocal of his lickspittles on <strong>Capitol Hill<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>* Once its casinos are up and running, <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong> is going to be the most paternalistic <!--more-->gaming jurisdiction in the U.S. Already Attorney General <strong>Maura Healey<\/strong> is calling for gambling parlors to be on the lookout for drug dealers and white slavers. (I&#8217;m not making this up.)\u00a0&#8220;Obviously, everyone is opposed to money laundering and human trafficking,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/healey_maura.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-13300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/healey_maura.jpg\" alt=\"healey_maura\" width=\"200\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/healey_maura.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/healey_maura-120x150.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>responded <strong>Massachusetts Gaming Commission<\/strong> Chairman <strong>Stephen Crosby<\/strong>, adding,\u00a0We don&#8217;t want to blow it out of proportion, but you do want to think aggressively and creatively about how you make sure these things don&#8217;t become problematic in our state.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>American Gaming Association<\/strong> was less diplomatic, calling Healey &#8220;completely misguided&#8221; and the victim of\u00a0&#8220;deep and disappointing bias against the casino gaming industry.&#8221; Indeed, she was a casino opponent prior to be elected A.G. last November. She&#8217;s already promising to oversee casinos with what some would say is a heavy hand.<\/p>\n<p>In an unrelated development, Bay State legislators raised the &#8220;IRS lockdown&#8221; at which slot\u00a0winnings must be reported from $600 to $1,200, bringing Massachusetts into compliance with federal practice, as well as that of other states. The thought of making customers fill out twice as much paperwork as in <strong>Rhode Island<\/strong> or <strong>Connecticut<\/strong> must not have been far from lawmakers&#8217; minds. Or, as Rep. <strong>Brian Dempsey<\/strong> (D) put it,\u00a0&#8220;To someone who&#8217;s gambling to that amount, it could be a deterrent for that individual to be gambling in Massachusetts.&#8221; Lawmakers attached the provision to a must-pass supplemental budget containing funding for homeless shelters and Gov. <strong>Charlie Baker<\/strong> (R) shrugged off the new language.<\/p>\n<p>* As of this week, the <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong> portfolio <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vegasinc.com\/business\/gaming\/2015\/apr\/01\/mgm-resorts-finalizes-sale-railroad-pass\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">contains one less non-core asset<\/a>, the ancient <strong>Railroad Pass Casino<\/strong>. The 84-year-old property was sold to <strong>Joseph DeSimone<\/strong>, who still awaits licensing.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <strong>Carlo Santarelli<\/strong> sat down with the head honchos of <strong>Land &amp; Buildings<\/strong> to discuss their proposed REIT-ization of MGM and partial takeover of its board. Santarelli still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/crystals.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2017\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/crystals-300x110.jpg\" alt=\"crystals\" width=\"300\" height=\"110\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/crystals-300x110.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/crystals-150x55.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/crystals.jpg 760w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>rates both events as being of a &#8220;low probability&#8221; but outlined more modest ways in which MGM could achieve similar goals: asset sales (<strong>Crystals<\/strong>\u00a0frequently gets mentioned), tighter cost discipline, de-emphasizing growth in favor of deleveraging and consolidating &#8212; or deconsolidating &#8212; ownership of unspecified assets. Think <strong>Borgata<\/strong>, <strong>Grand Victoria<\/strong> in <strong>Illinois<\/strong>, <strong>CityCenter<\/strong>. As for some of Land &amp; Buildings&#8217; ideas, Santarelli wrote, &#8220;levering up the asset for a significant special dividend only raises the risk profile of the entity and &#8230;\u00a0selling or spinning the [<strong>Macao<\/strong>] asset likely puts MGM in a difficult longer term position when positioning for other Asian expansion opportunities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Now that he&#8217;s no longer standing for reelection, Sen.
