{"id":15851,"date":"2015-04-08T11:18:58","date_gmt":"2015-04-08T19:18:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=15851"},"modified":"2015-04-08T11:18:58","modified_gmt":"2015-04-08T19:18:58","slug":"good-year-for-atlantic-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/good-year-for-atlantic-city\/","title":{"rendered":"Good year for Atlantic City"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Boardwalker boosters like <strong>Glenn Straub<\/strong> who says <strong>Atlantic City<\/strong>&#8216;s still got plenty of life in it can point to today&#8217;s headlines: The city&#8217;s casinos <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressofatlanticcity.com\/news\/atlantic-city-casino-operating-profits-jump-percent-in\/article_0f026684-dd54-11e4-808e-efb604a0b3c6.html?mode=image&amp;photo=1\" target=\"_blank\">increased their operating profit last year by <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/trump-taj-maha.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-14742\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/trump-taj-maha-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"trump-taj maha\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/trump-taj-maha-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/trump-taj-maha-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/trump-taj-maha.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressofatlanticcity.com\/news\/atlantic-city-casino-operating-profits-jump-percent-in\/article_0f026684-dd54-11e4-808e-efb604a0b3c6.html?mode=image&amp;photo=1\" target=\"_blank\">45%<\/a>. Unless you count the defunct <strong>Revel<\/strong> (-$48.5 million) and <strong>Trump Plaza<\/strong>\u00a0(-$13 million), only one casino finished in the red. It was &#8212; you guessed it &#8212; <strong>Trump Taj Mahal<\/strong>, where bungling CEO <strong>Bob Griffin<\/strong> turned 2013&#8217;s $20 million profit into a $1 million loss. Heck, even the <strong>Showboat<\/strong>, before <strong>Gary Loveman<\/strong> smothered it in the crib, posted a $13 million profit. <strong>Caesars Interactive<\/strong> managed to lose that money right back, registering a $12.5 million deficit. While the three remaining <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> casinos saw profitability tighten, most particularly at <strong>Bally&#8217;s Wild Wild West<\/strong>, all were safely (?) in the black.<\/p>\n<p>The slimmest profit was <strong>Resorts Atlantic City<\/strong>&#8216;s $2.5 million, a long distance from <!--more--><strong>Borgata<\/strong>&#8216;s phat $158.5 million or even <strong>Harrah&#8217;s Resort<\/strong>&#8216;s handsome $97 million. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressofatlanticcity.com\/news\/atlantic-city-casino-operating-profits-jump-percent-in\/article_0f026684-dd54-11e4-808e-efb604a0b3c6.html\" target=\"_blank\">A 3% increase in hotel occupancy<\/a> and 1% growth in ADRs didn&#8217;t hurt, either. There are two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Golden-Nugget-AC.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-6769\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Golden-Nugget-AC-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"Golden Nugget AC\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Golden-Nugget-AC-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Golden-Nugget-AC-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Golden-Nugget-AC.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>contradictory but valid ways of interpreting this data. One is that the market has stabilized and even has room for new competition. The other is that Atlantic City has finally &#8216;rightsized&#8217; and needs more casinos like it needs a hole in the hole in the head. Arguing for the latter viewpoint, <strong>Golden Nugget<\/strong> General Manager <strong>Tom Pohlman<\/strong> said,\u00a0\u201cThe numbers speak for themselves.\u201d (Easy to say that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.therepublic.com\/view\/story\/de3f9bcebf49417daaba257646274ee3\/NJ--Earns-Atlantic-City-Casinos\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">when you&#8217;re sitting atop a 144% increase in operating profit<\/a> and vacuuming up customers from dead casinos.)<\/p>\n<p>* Speaking of Revel, it has a new name. As of today, it&#8217;s <strong>Polo North<\/strong>. I&#8217;m not sure that isn&#8217;t a case of a change being mistaken for progress. One associates polo neither with mass appeal nor with pulling slot handles in lieu of swinging polo mallets. Straub&#8217;s proposed capex<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Revel_1340.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-14312\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Revel_1340-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Revel_1340\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Revel_1340-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Revel_1340-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Revel_1340.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>investment has escalated to $150 million, as he plans add a water park and build the originally\u00a0planned second hotel tower\u00a0to house his projected global problem-solving university. And if you thought that Straub&#8217;s $500 million budget for a whale of Atlantic City infrastructure and amusement projects seemed inadequate to the task**, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nj.com\/atlantic\/index.ssf\/2015\/04\/revel_could_open_by_summer_as_new_owner_says_hell_spend_150m_cure_a_few_world_problems.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">you were right<\/a>: &#8220;$500 million is not enough,&#8221; Straub admitted, after saying,\u00a0&#8220;I think everybody else will see what we&#8217;re going to spend here and they are going to spend five times more than what we&#8217;re going to spend.&#8221; That&#8217;s quite a burden of expectations.<\/p>\n<p>Straub, with customary Delphic obscurity, said only that conflicts with Revel&#8217;s tenants were\u00a0&#8220;all wrapped up.&#8221; If that&#8217;s truly behind him, Job One becomes getting a gaming license. Meanwhile, his purchase of the Showboat turns out to be in abeyance, a contingency plan unless Caesars and <strong>Stockton University<\/strong> can&#8217;t resolve <strong>Trump Entertainment Resorts<\/strong>&#8216; obstructionism.<\/p>\n<p>(** &#8212; Straub&#8217;s grand vision is described as including\u00a0&#8220;the redevelopment of <strong>Bader Field<\/strong> and the construction of an extreme sports complex, two marinas capable of hosting &#8216;super yachts,&#8217; an equestrian facility, waterparks and two universities, as well as high-speed ferries and helicopters between <strong>Atlantic City<\/strong> and <strong>Manhattan<\/strong>.
