{"id":16060,"date":"2015-05-14T12:43:38","date_gmt":"2015-05-14T20:43:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=16060"},"modified":"2015-05-18T10:09:15","modified_gmt":"2015-05-18T18:09:15","slug":"behind-the-showboat-sale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/behind-the-showboat-sale\/","title":{"rendered":"Behind the Showboat sale; Cosmo comeback"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During its crusade\u00a0to drive <strong>Stockton University<\/strong> out of the <strong>Showboat<\/strong>, the CEO of <strong>Trump Entertainment Resorts<\/strong>, <strong>Robert Griffin<\/strong> airily informed Stockton <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Showboat_Atlantic_City.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-13931\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Showboat_Atlantic_City-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Showboat_Atlantic_City\" width=\"278\" height=\"185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Showboat_Atlantic_City-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Showboat_Atlantic_City-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Showboat_Atlantic_City.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 278px) 100vw, 278px\" \/><\/a>representatives that they should buy <strong>Trump Plaza<\/strong> instead &#8212; puncturing TER&#8217;s public posture that college kids should be kept far away from its casinos. Turns out that Showboat <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressofatlanticcity.com\/communities\/atlantic-city_pleasantville_brigantine\/before-showboat-stockton-offered-to-buy-atlantic-club\/article_3795912a-f906-11e4-9d59-77a0f2d6da26.html\" target=\"_blank\">wasn&#8217;t Stockton&#8217;s first choice on the Boardwalk<\/a>: It tried to buy the<strong> Atlantic Club<\/strong> from <strong>TJM Properties<\/strong> at a steep markup. Stockton would have paid $23 million for what TJM got for $13.5 million.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, someone at Stockton was minding the mint. Numbers were run and <!--more-->it was concluded that &#8212; even at the TJM price &#8212; buying Showboat was a better real estate play than pursuing the Atlantic Club. It was also cheaper than building a new dorm and parking garage on its main campus in <strong>Galloway Township<\/strong>, a $75 million proposition. Since <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> didn&#8217;t keep its verbal commitment to Stockton to remove a covenant with TER that restricted the Showboat to casino use (creating what <em>The Press of Atlantic City<\/em> calls &#8220;an absurd scenario&#8221;), the university is in limbo, leaving new Showboat owner <strong>Glenn Straub<\/strong> to try and find an employment for the empty resort.<\/p>\n<p>* Speaking of defunct casinos, Assemblyman <strong>Chris Brown<\/strong> (R) continues to pursue litigation that would void Caesars&#8217; ability to remove the gaming entitlement from closed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/brown_chris_color.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-14042\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/brown_chris_color.jpg\" alt=\"brown_chris_color\" width=\"151\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/brown_chris_color.jpg 151w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/brown_chris_color-102x150.jpg 102w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 151px) 100vw, 151px\" \/><\/a>properties, as it has done at the <strong>Claridge<\/strong>, Atlantic Club and Showboat. The overarching goal of the bill is to stimulate competition on the Boardwalk. Brown maintains that if the <strong>Division of Gaming Enforcement<\/strong> had listened to him, &#8220;we would have a ruling and would not be dealing with the restrictive covenant currently being asserted by the [<strong>Trump<\/strong>] <strong>Taj Mahal<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brown <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressofatlanticcity.com\/news\/breaking\/assemblyman-brown-pushes-for-more-oversight-of-caesars-ent\/article_caac08a6-f7f1-11e4-8d48-07e8e754ee8a.html\" target=\"_blank\">also wants closer regulatory scrutiny applied<\/a> to Caesars, lest its properties &#8212; especially <strong>Bally&#8217;s Wild Wild West<\/strong> &#8212; aren&#8217;t dragged down by their owner&#8217;s bankruptcy. He wrote to the DGE that a\u00a0\u00a0&#8220;hearing can determine if Caesars has the financial ability to invest in Bally\u2019s to maintain the high standards set by the <strong>Casino Control Act<\/strong>, so it does not end up like Trump Plaza \u2013 out of date, out of time, and out of business.\u201d <em>The Press<\/em> ominously adds that incoming Caesars CEO <strong>Mark Frissora<\/strong>&#8216;s reputation is built upon &#8220;sweeping cost-cutting campaigns.&#8221; That&#8217;s not what <strong>Atlantic City<\/strong> wants to hear.<\/p>\n<p>* In its first full quarter\u00a0of operating <strong>The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas<\/strong>, new owner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Cosmo_night.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-12552\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Cosmo_night-267x300.jpg\" alt=\"Cosmopolitan Las Vegas\" width=\"267\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Cosmo_night-267x300.jpg 267w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Cosmo_night-133x150.jpg 133w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Cosmo_night.jpg 456w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/><\/a><strong>Blackstone Group<\/strong> has managed to increase revenues 4% and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vegasinc.com\/business\/gaming\/2015\/may\/13\/loss-down-casino-revenue-cosmopolitan-first-quarte\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">narrow a 1Q14 loss of $13 million to $5 million and change<\/a>. The Cosmo improved the most in the area where it had the most need to improve: the casino. Gambling revenues jumped 19%, including a 28% escalation in slot winnings. Management says it&#8217;s not content to stop there. A previous tower of strength, food and beverage, actually slipped 4%. Despite lower occupancy, the Cosmo was able to drive hotel rates to $332\/night, resulting in a 6% revenue gain. Management attributed a small slippage in retail and entertainment monies to having fewer guests on-property. Win some, lose some. Meanwhile, a settlement of litigation over new-wave vaudeville <em>Vegas Nocturne<\/em> hovers on the verge\u00a0of resolution.<\/p>\n<p>* An attempt by <strong>Steve Wynn<\/strong> to chill free speech in <strong>Nevada<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/news\/nevada-legislature\/bill-weaken-nevada-s-anti-slapp-statute-called-dead\" target=\"_blank\">appears to have been asphyxiated<\/a>\u00a0in the state Assembly.
