Still, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/operating-profits-up-for-surviving-atlantic-city-casinos\" target=\"_blank\">Atlantic City is coming off a very profitable April<\/a>, up from $39 million last year to $81 million, with <strong>Borgata<\/strong> alone contributing $38.5 million worth of good news. \u201cWe aggressively reached out [to orphaned players] and the customer base found Borgata to be a nice home,\u201d said President <strong>Joe Lupo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The only money-losers were <!--more-->bumbling <strong>Trump Taj Mahal<\/strong> (no surprise there) and low-grossing <strong>Resorts Atlantic City<\/strong> (ditto). The latter, despite having imported expertise from <strong>Mohegan Sun<\/strong> to run the place, has never recaptured the mojo of the <strong>Dennis Gomes<\/strong> era.<\/p>\n<p>* Also reporting some good news was the State of <strong>Mississippi<\/strong>, whose casino industry was on a welcome upswing last month. Even the problematic riverboat casinos had a good time of it, notching a 4% increase, while the Gulf Coast ones had a\u00a0strong performance, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.therepublic.com\/view\/story\/8a8dac49bcd9475da20fd96f5cf5e505\/MS--Casino-Revenue\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">stronger than usual<\/a>: up 11.5%.<\/p>\n<p>* Score the latest round in the battle of <strong>Las Vegas Sands<\/strong> for <strong>Steven <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Sheldon.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6216\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Sheldon.jpg\" alt=\"Sheldon\" width=\"138\" height=\"135\" \/><\/a>Jacobs<\/strong>. A <strong>Nevada<\/strong> court ruled that his wrongful-termination suit will be heard in <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong>, not in <strong>Macao<\/strong>, where he was CEO of <strong>Sands China<\/strong>. There&#8217;s no way of assuming Chinese jurisprudence would be kindlier to <strong>Sheldon Adelson<\/strong> than Vegas has been, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.casino.org\/news\/sheldon-adelson-wrongful-termination-lawsuit-to-be-heard-in-us-court\" target=\"_blank\">but his shambolic performance on the witness stand<\/a> helped put the ball firmly in Judge <strong>Elizabeth Gonzalez<\/strong>&#8216;s court. Sands&#8217; best hope lies in keeping Adelson mum at trial.<\/p>\n<p>* $21.2 billion worth of casino product is <a href=\"http:\/\/siouxcityjournal.com\/news\/world\/asia\/channeling-batman-versailles-macau-s-new-wave-of-resorts\/article_28c96d18-1edb-56f3-999d-7bbf0f7c3352.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">headed at Macao like a runaway train<\/a> (including Sands&#8217; $2.7 billion) <strong>Parisian<\/strong>, despite a shortage of labor and high-rolling VIP players having gone to ground. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/The-Parisian.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-15882\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/The-Parisian-300x189.jpg\" alt=\"The-Parisian\" width=\"268\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a>On the other hand, with so much capital tied up in unfinished (or nearly finished) casino megaresorts, it&#8217;s difficult and probably\u00a0counterproductive to try and put a brake on the development. And if, with properties like <strong>Encore<\/strong> and <strong>Resorts World Las Vegas<\/strong>, Sin City is trying to &#8216;go Macao,&#8217; <strong>Melco Crown Entertainment<\/strong>&#8216;s familiar-sounding <strong>Studio City<\/strong> shows that it&#8217;s a two-way street. <strong>Steve Wynn<\/strong> may have a leg up on everyone, though, by catering to VIP smokers with terraces that immediately adjoin gambling rooms, allowing the whales to indulge their equally frenetic passions for baccarat and nicotine.
