Writes <strong>Carlo Santarelli<\/strong> of <strong>Deutsche Bank<\/strong>, &#8220;We view the tightening with forecasts &#8230;\u00a0as a modest positive for the group and an indication of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Sands-Macao.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-15855\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Sands-Macao-300x189.jpg\" alt=\"Sands-Macao\" width=\"300\" height=\"189\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Sands-Macao-300x189.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Sands-Macao-150x94.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Sands-Macao.jpg 625w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>a forming bottom.&#8221; In other words, the sub hasn&#8217;t stopped sinking but it&#8217;s starting to strike silt. One Macanese operator, <strong>Sociedade de Jogos de Macau<\/strong> CEO <strong>Ambrose So<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/ggbnews.com\/issue\/vol-13-no-22-june-1-2015\/article\/cotai-phase-ii-begins-in-macau\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">doesn&#8217;t see full recovery<\/a> for two years:\u00a0\u201cIn the long run, with the <strong>Hong Kong<\/strong>&#8211;<strong>Zhuhai<\/strong>&#8211;<strong>Macao Bridge<\/strong> in use in 2017, business would be back to normal. When the roads are open, money will come in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To those like <strong>Union Gaming<\/strong>, who deplore <!--more-->the local government&#8217;s &#8220;environment of increasing unease amongst operators and investors as it interprets Mainland directives and offers knee-jerk reactions to Macau citizen whims,\u201d it is worth remembering that Macao still dwarfs <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> in gambling revenue. Gross gaming revenues for the month were $2.5 billion. Slot numbers weren&#8217;t available but <strong>Sands China<\/strong>\u00a0led the market in table games share by a wide margin, with 27%. <strong>Sheldon Adelson<\/strong> doesn&#8217;t like to hear market share cited as a metric but that number ought to make him a happy camper.<\/p>\n<p>* Santarelli is bullish on <strong>Wynn Resorts<\/strong>&#8216; <strong>Boston<\/strong>-area casino (assuming local politicians allow it to be built), writing &#8220;we believe the Wynn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Wynn-Everett.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-15390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Wynn-Everett-300x164.jpeg\" alt=\"Massachusetts Gambling\" width=\"300\" height=\"164\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Wynn-Everett-300x164.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Wynn-Everett-150x82.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Wynn-Everett.jpeg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Boston project will generate a solid return on invested capital and serve to further geographically diversify the portfolio.&#8221; He describes the <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong> tax rate (25%) as &#8220;manageable,&#8221; adding that the megaresort can be expected to generate $700 million to $840 million per year. He does, however, have misgivings about the $1.7 million cost (&#8220;the largest spend for a regional gaming facility in U.S. history&#8221;) and the long timeframe before <strong>Wynn Everett<\/strong> can start paying for itself.<\/p>\n<p>&#8221; Given tight high end hotel supply in the Boston market and superior proximity to the greatest population density in the region, we think investors struggle with the absolute dollar spend,&#8221; Santarelli writes, noting that Wynn could probably get the same pop for less money &#8221; which would still enable Wynn Boston to be the most luxurious casino resort destination in the region.&#8221; He also worries that the leverage could hamstring Wynn <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ggrasia.com\/lvs-wynn-and-mgm-can-withstand-macau-slump-fitch\/\" target=\"_blank\">should opportunities in <strong>Japan<\/strong> arise<\/a> or that the money might be better put toward share repurchases. However, the Boston market is just sitting there, waiting to be tapped (just ask <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong>), so why <em>not<\/em> Wynn?<\/p>\n<p>* Gambling regulation in the great state of <strong>California<\/strong> has become something of a revolving door. <strong>Richard Lopes<\/strong>, chairman of the <strong>California Bureau of Gaming Control<\/strong>, has resigned, citing health <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Lopes.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-16151\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Lopes.jpg\" alt=\"Lopes\" width=\"201\" height=\"164\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Lopes.jpg 201w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Lopes-150x122.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><\/a>reasons. However, he presided over the CBGC during a period in which former chief of enforcement <strong>Bob Lytle<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pechanga.net\/content\/lopes-littleton-recuse-themselves-lytle-licensing-case\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">is accused of funneling sensitive information to card rooms<\/a>, for whom he is now a lobbyist. (Lytle went from enforcer to lobbyist <a href=\"http:\/\/ggbnews.com\/issue\/vol-13-no-22-june-1-2015\/article\/california-gambling-chief-resigns\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">literally in just one day<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Lopes&#8217; resignation comes a fortnight after ex-executive director <strong>Tina Littleton<\/strong> accepted a demotion. Lytle apparently used Littleton&#8217;s boyfriend as a back-channel to the bureau. Wow. Gaming regulation is nowhere near this colorful in the Silver State (exception when <strong>Sam Nazarian<\/strong> is snorting\u00a0coke and paying off felons.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>That&#8217;s Wall Street&#8216;s spin on a 37% decline in May gambling revenues.
