{"id":16231,"date":"2015-06-17T15:08:39","date_gmt":"2015-06-17T23:08:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=16231"},"modified":"2019-10-30T06:43:29","modified_gmt":"2019-10-30T14:43:29","slug":"rock-in-rio-flops-tighter-slots-in-maryland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/rock-in-rio-flops-tighter-slots-in-maryland\/","title":{"rendered":"Rock in Rio flops; Tighter slots in Maryland?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to <em>Vital Vegas<\/em>, the first Strip outing of <strong>Rock in Rio<\/strong> might be its last, as the music festival <a href=\"http:\/\/vitalvegas.com\/rock-in-rio-usa-shocker-festival-lost-28-million-in-its-first-las-vegas-outing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">may have lost as much as $28 million<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Circus-Circus-pic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-4478\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Circus-Circus-pic-300x193.jpg\" alt=\"Circus-Circus-pic\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Circus-Circus-pic-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Circus-Circus-pic-150x96.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Circus-Circus-pic.jpg 310w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><em>Vital Vegas<\/em> puts attendance at a dreadful 130,000 (out of a possible 320,000) and even the <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong>-friendly <em>Las Vegas Review Journal<\/em>\u00a0places the head count at just 50% of capacity, with only 15% coming from locals. (I&#8217;m told that the music carried so loudly into some neighborhoods that a ticket was superfluous.) The poor showing can partly be attributed to <!--more-->inflated expectations for an untested brand and a musical lineup frequently described as &#8220;lackluster.&#8221; MGM and Rock in Rio have two years to get the next one right, if they&#8217;ve got the stomach for it. If you&#8217;re looking for an upside, <strong>Circus Circus<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/business\/casinos-gaming\/mgm-chief-murren-sees-no-new-hotel-casinos-the-strip-now\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">has received an implicit repriev<\/a>e from the governor.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Maryland<\/strong> hasn&#8217;t fully built out its allotted number of casinos and already one industry expert says the Free State has hit the saturation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Maryland-Live-rendering.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-8904\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Maryland-Live-rendering-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Maryland-Live-rendering\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Maryland-Live-rendering-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Maryland-Live-rendering-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Maryland-Live-rendering.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>point. &#8220;Maryland has too many casinos in too close an area,&#8221; <strong>Alan Woinski<\/strong> tells <em>MarylandReporter.com<\/em>. Even without <strong>MGM National Harbor<\/strong> in the mix, <strong>Maryland Live<\/strong> and <strong>Horseshoe Baltimore<\/strong> are kneecapping one another. The one has kept Horseshoe below revenue projections, while the &#8216;Shoe has cut Maryland Live&#8217;s share of the total Maryland market from 76% to a still-impressive 60%. <a href=\"http:\/\/marylandreporter.com\/2015\/06\/15\/maryland-live-casino-remains-strong-despite-horseshoes-competition-in-baltimore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">Both are projected to more lose customers<\/a> when National Harbor opens next year.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Maryland Lottery &amp; Gaming Control Agency<\/strong> had projected Horseshoe to do $354 million in its first fiscal year but it looks like the <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> property will come in closer to $232 million (in less than a full fiscal year, to be fair). <strong>Cordish Gaming<\/strong>-owned Live <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Horseshoe-Baltimore.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-14276\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Horseshoe-Baltimore-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Horseshoe Baltimore\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Horseshoe-Baltimore-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Horseshoe-Baltimore-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Horseshoe-Baltimore.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>is killing Horseshoe at the tables, averaging $101,973 to Horseshoe&#8217;s $63,775. Casino customers from <strong>Washington, D.C.<\/strong>, would also have to drive by Maryland Live to get to Horseshoe.\u00a0\u201cI never believe in the idea of \u2018city casinos,\u2019\u201d remarks Woinski.<\/p>\n<p>All the state&#8217;s casinos are feeling the pain of the state&#8217;s 60% tax rate and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/business\/bs-bz-slots-payouts-plan-20150613-story.html#page=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">are appealing to be allow to tighten slot holds<\/a>. If they get their way, they would only have to return 85% of coin-in to players. (At present, Maryland slots are looser than <strong>Pennsylvania<\/strong>&#8216;s and <strong>West Virginia<\/strong>&#8216;s.)\u00a0&#8221;Certainly there&#8217;s an opportunity for us to bring in additional revenues for us and the state,&#8221; said the general manager of <strong>Hollywood Casino Perryville<\/strong> with refreshing candor. Casino executives say they <em>really<\/em> wouldn&#8217;t tighten slots all the way, but why propose it in the first place?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Luedtke.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-16236\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Luedtke.jpg\" alt=\"Luedtke\" width=\"180\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Luedtke.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Luedtke-108x150.jpg 108w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/><\/a>&#8220;The counter argument is if people feel they&#8217;re getting a bum deal, they&#8217;re not going to play. I would worry that players in Maryland might consider going elsewhere if they felt payouts were higher in neighboring states,&#8221; counters\u00a0<strong>Eric G. Luedtke<\/strong> (D, <em>right<\/em>), who chairs the <strong>Joint Committee on Gaming Oversight<\/strong>. At present, little <strong>Ocean Downs<\/strong> is your best bet, at 92% payout, while remote\u00a0<strong>Rocky Gap Casino<\/strong> is a hair under 90%. Woinski thinks customers will quickly cop to tighter slots:\u00a0&#8220;The players aren&#8217;t that dumb.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>* Halfway between <strong>Tallahassee<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>Chattahoochee<\/strong> is a racetrack in <strong>Gretna<\/strong> that wants to add slot machines. A federal judge found a<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Bondi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-16233\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Bondi.jpg\" alt=\"Bondi\" width=\"144\" height=\"186\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Bondi.jpg 144w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Bondi-116x150.jpg 116w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 144px) 100vw, 144px\" \/><\/a>loophole in <strong>Florida<\/strong> in law that would make it happen &#8212; creating a precedent for a wider spread of gambling in Florida. Attorney General <strong>Pam Bondi<\/strong> is appealing the matter to the <strong>First District Court of Appeals<\/strong> and has a new friend (0f the court) in the <strong>Seminole Tribe<\/strong>. The latter, failed by Gov. <strong>Rick Scott<\/strong> (R) and the Legislature in compact negotiations, says it would suffer &#8220;grave financial harm&#8221; if slots start popping up at horse and dog tracks all over the Sunshine State.<\/p>\n<p>* The <strong>Interior Department<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spokesman.com\/stories\/2015\/jun\/15\/interior-department-approves-400-million-spokane-t\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">has green-lit a casino-hotel<\/a> and retail mall for the <strong>Spokane Tribe<\/strong>, declaring it to be &#8220;in the best interests of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Inslee.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-16234\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Inslee.jpg\" alt=\"Inslee\" width=\"152\" height=\"186\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Inslee.jpg 152w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Inslee-123x150.jpg 123w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 152px) 100vw, 152px\" \/><\/a>the Spokane Tribe and its members and not detrimental to the surrounding\u00a0community.\u201d This set off <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spokesman.com\/stories\/2015\/jun\/17\/spokane-tribe-casino-opponents-take-case-to-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a bipartisan hissy fit among a sextet of area lawmakers<\/a>, who penned a fearmongering letter warning it\u00a0\u201copen the floodgates to gaming in every community in our state, whether the local community wants it or\u00a0not.\u201d (Translation: The Indians are coming.) The matter now rests in the hands of <strong>Washington State<\/strong> Gov. <strong>Jay Inslee<\/strong> (D).<\/p>\n<p>Among others trying to influence Inslee is Rep. <strong>Cathy McMorris Rogers <\/strong>(R),\u00a0who fears the Spokane Tribe&#8217;s expansion will encroach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Rodgers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-16235\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Rodgers.jpg\" alt=\"Rodgers\" width=\"186\" height=\"186\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Rodgers.jpg 186w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Rodgers-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 186px) 100vw, 186px\" \/><\/a>upon nearby <strong>Fairchild Air Force Base<\/strong>. Among the unspoken ironies of the process is that Fairchild AFB kept mum when it had the opportunity to weigh in against the casino project. Also, the <strong>Kalispel Tribe<\/strong>, owners of nearby <strong>Northern Quest Casino<\/strong>, currently have gaming on non-ancestral land and the Spokane have ancestral land but no casino. Let&#8217;s hope Gov. Inslee gives the Spokane Tribe his stamp of approval.<\/p>\n<p>* Across the <strong>Pacific Ocean<\/strong>, there&#8217;s an arms race of sorts going on for the market share not being captured by <strong>Macao<\/strong> or <strong>Singapore<\/strong>. The former may have six new casinos hitting the market in the next couple of years, but as many as 11 could be built in <strong>Russia<\/strong>, <strong>South Korea<\/strong>, the <strong>Philippines<\/strong>, <strong>New Zealand<\/strong> and <strong>Australia<\/strong>. That&#8217;s a major expansion, even without ever-ambivalent <strong>Japan<\/strong> in the mix. The reason? 100 million Chinese tourists, for starters. Hard as it may be to believe, Macao has penetrated only 1% of the Chinese market, so you can imagine how much overseas rivals would like to get a crack at the other 99%.<\/p>\n<p>* One of our favorite casino-industry people, <strong>Julia Carcamo<\/strong>, has been retained by casino-data analytics firm <strong>Harvest Trends<\/strong>. She will advise it on the launch of its new <strong>PowerHost<\/strong> product, somewhat vaguely defined as a &#8220;new contact management solution for casino hosts.&#8221; We&#8217;re sure Harvest Trends will be receiving some expert advice.
