{"id":16322,"date":"2015-07-02T12:06:10","date_gmt":"2015-07-02T20:06:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=16322"},"modified":"2020-07-18T04:10:48","modified_gmt":"2020-07-18T12:10:48","slug":"mgm-goes-to-atlanta-pechanga-named-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/mgm-goes-to-atlanta-pechanga-named-1\/","title":{"rendered":"MGM goes to Atlanta; Pechanga named #1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Instead of waiting for an incremental creep of acceptance of gambling in <strong>Georgia<\/strong>, <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong> is taking the bull by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/ron-stephens.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-16323\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/ron-stephens.jpg\" alt=\"ron stephens\" width=\"173\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/ron-stephens.jpg 173w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/ron-stephens-104x150.jpg 104w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 173px) 100vw, 173px\" \/><\/a>horns. While it says that it is in the &#8220;very preliminary&#8221; stages of proposing a casino for <strong>Atlanta<\/strong>, it also called it &#8220;a beautiful market.&#8221; MGM has at least been confident enough to share its plans with state Rep. <strong>Ron Stephens<\/strong> (R, <em>left<\/em>), who said,\u00a0\u201cI\u2019ve seen what they want to do, and it\u2019s going to blow your mind.\u00a0It\u2019s massive in its size and its elegance. &#8221; He called the $1 billion project a &#8220;game-changer,&#8221; although the governor and most lawmakers seem inclined to play by the same rules as before.<\/p>\n<p>There is, however, a Stephens-penned constitutional amendment working its way through the legislature\u00a0that would permit <!--more-->local jurisdictions autonomy in deciding whether they want gaming or not. If it goes through, MGM could be building on the site of the doomed <strong>Georgia Dome<\/strong> (or a couple of other locations) in a few years. Stephens is \u00a0potentially helped by the fact that the <strong>HOPE scholarship<\/strong> program is gasping for funds. However, he&#8217;ll still have to make a convert of Gov. <strong>Nathan Deal<\/strong> (R, <em>right<\/em>) and overcome the opposition of the Religious Right. Stephens&#8217; need for a two-thirds majority in the Lege makes this a long shot but there are signs and portents that the Georgia GOP is coming around to his way of seeing things.\u00a0The arguments in Stephens&#8217;\u00a0arsenal include MGM&#8217;s lack of need for public subsidies. Even Deal might have to reconcile his approval of gray-market gaming machines with his opposition to casinos. Stephens\u00a0says &#8220;this would be bigger than the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestate.com\/news\/politics-government\/article20632770.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\"><strong>Volvo<\/strong> deal<\/a>, and not one dime of public money. They don\u2019t want a dime of incentives, they just want to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>* Georgia&#8217;s online lottery is the latest bogeyman in <strong>Sheldon Adelson<\/strong>&#8216;s war on <strong>Internet<\/strong> gambling. His lobbyists are using a video showing a <strong>Virginia<\/strong> man hacking into the Georgia lottery. (Had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Sheldon_Adelson-dye-job.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-8813\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Sheldon_Adelson-dye-job-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Sheldon_Adelson dye job\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Sheldon_Adelson-dye-job-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Sheldon_Adelson-dye-job-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Sheldon_Adelson-dye-job.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Adelson been so concerned about hackers two\u00a0years ago, <strong>Las Vegas Sands<\/strong> might not have been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/bw\/articles\/2014-12-11\/iranian-hackers-hit-sheldon-adelsons-sands-casino-in-las-vegas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">ransacked by Iranian cyber-saboteurs<\/a>.) However, Adelson&#8217;s surrogates are playing fast and loose with the truth. The problem isn&#8217;t that Georgia&#8217;s lottery is online but that it uses inadequate safeguards. The <strong>Poker Players Alliance<\/strong> hit back, <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/congress-blog\/economy-budget\/246465-gloves-are-off-in-lobbying-war-for-online-gambling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">releasing its own video<\/a> in which <strong>GeoComply<\/strong> demonstrates the five-tier system of geolocation with which <strong>New Jersey<\/strong>, <strong>Nevada<\/strong> and <strong>Delaware<\/strong> protect their online casinos. Rush Street, having scrapped a more modernistic design, now concedes its retrenchment may have been &#8220;too drastic.&#8221; The plan includes one of the more unusual casino amenities of recent times, a marina with 50 boat slips, so you can drop anchor and gamble.<\/p>\n<p>* Congratulations to <strong>Pechanga Resort &amp; Casino<\/strong>, which USA Today <a href=\"http:\/\/indiancountrytodaymedianetwork.com\/2015\/07\/01\/pechanga-resort-casino-americas-favorite-resortcasino-usa-today-poll-says-160916\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">named &#8220;America&#8217;s favorite casino&#8221;<\/a> on the basis of a <strong>10Best.com<\/strong> poll, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Pechanga.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-16327\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Pechanga-300x131.jpg\" alt=\"Pechanga\" width=\"300\" height=\"131\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Pechanga-300x131.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Pechanga-150x66.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Pechanga.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>big win for the\u00a0<strong>Pechanga\u00a0Band of Luise\u00f1o Indians<\/strong>. For all their recent struggles, <strong>Mohegan Sun<\/strong> and <strong>Foxwoods Resort Casino<\/strong> also remained popular with players, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.10best.com\/awards\/travel\/best-u-s-casino\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">snaring the second- and third-place spots<\/a>. Fourth-place winner was another surprise contender, <strong>Pinnacle Entertainment<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>L&#8217;Auberge du Lac<\/strong> in <strong>Lake Charles<\/strong>, <strong>Louisiana<\/strong> (the most important gaming market you probably haven&#8217;t visited).<\/p>\n<p>Another dark-horse favorite was <strong>Hard Rock Hotel &amp; Casino<\/strong> in <strong>Biloxi<\/strong>, while <strong>Harrah&#8217;s Resort Southern California<\/strong> (#6, formerly <strong>Harrah&#8217;s Rincon<\/strong>) continued the march of tribal dominance. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/red_rock.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2469\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/red_rock.jpg\" alt=\"red_rock\" width=\"300\" height=\"208\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/red_rock.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/red_rock-150x104.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><strong>Atlantic City<\/strong> got on the board at #7, thanks to <strong>Borgata<\/strong>, where else, and <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> finally made the list with another surprise winner <strong>Red Rock Casino Resort &amp; Spa<\/strong>, a big feather in <strong>Station Casinos<\/strong>&#8216; cap. (If you put it on the Strip it would arguably be the best boutique casino in Vegas.) Considering its low ranking in <strong>Indiana<\/strong> casino revenues, <strong>French Lick Resort<\/strong> was a real shocker at #9, while tribal\u00a0<strong>Thunder Valley Casino Resort<\/strong>, near <strong>Sacramento<\/strong>, rounded out the list.<\/p>\n<p>The Strip having been completely skunked (ditto several major casino chains), it might behoove some gaming executives to hotfoot it to Pechanga and some of the tribal winners and see what they&#8217;re doing differently. Kudos to Pechanga on 20 successful years, which are being crowned with a $285 million expansion described as &#8220;a luxury spa, new ballroom and meeting space, a resort-style pool complex, two restaurants and several other upgrades.&#8221; In other words, there&#8217;s going to be a new megaresort on the block.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Instead of waiting for an incremental creep of acceptance of gambling in Georgia, MGM Resorts International is taking the bull by the horns.
